CREDIT: HUMAN EVOLUTION 1 A team of eminent specialists from a variety of academic disciplines has coalesced around a goal of creating new insight into the life and genius of Leonardo da Vinci by means of authoritative new research and modern detective technologies, including DNA science. The Leonardo Project is in pursuit of several possible physical connections to Leonardo, beaming radar, for example, at an ancient Italian church floor to help corroborate extensive research to pinpoint the likely location of the tomb of his father and other relatives. A collaborating scholar also recently announced the successful tracing of several likely DNA relatives of Leonardo living today in Italy (see endnotes). If granted the necessary approvals, the Project will compare DNA from Leonardo's relatives past and present with physical remnants -- hair, bones, fingerprints and skin cells -- associated with the Renaissance figure whose life marked the rebirth of Western civilization. The Project's objectives, motives, methods, and work to date are detailed in a special issue of the journal Human Evolution, published coincident with a meeting of the group hosted in Florence this week under the patronage of Eugenio Giani, President of the Tuscan Regional Council (Consiglio Regionale della Toscana).

The delegation was further composed of Elgizoli Mohamed Aabbas Fadlelmola, General Director of Fund Housing and Construction, and the two engineers Elkhal Wati Elsharif Elnour Elzaki and Hani Abdelhamid Merghani Abdelkarim. They were welcomed by the Deputy Mayor and offered a gift (the Minister was given a book on the treasures of Florence). The delegation also visited the Quartieri Monumentali. FEBRUARY 2012 2. 14/02: Welcome to Mariano Perez Claver, the Spanish president of the NH Hotel-group and Jose Maria Basterrechea, the managing director of NH Hotel Italia. They had a meeting with Mayor Renzi about the developing opportunities in Florence. The NH-group has three hotels in the city and made some suggestions about possible projects. Furthermore, the economy of tourism in general was discussed, after which the delegation visited the Salone dei 500. 3. 15/02: Welcome to the Ambassador of the Republic of Korea, Young-Seok Kim, and his political advisor Park Ho. The Ambassador and his advisor were welcomed by the Mayor and subsequently accompanied during a visit to Palazzo Vecchio. 4. 17/02 : Welcome to the Ambassador of New Zealand, Mr. Trevor Donald Matheson, and his wife, who were visiting Florence on the occasion of the presentation in the Salone dé Dugento “21 July-4 August 1944: the days of the liberation. The New Zealandian troups from San Donato to the gates of Florence”.

A handful of specialists and enthusiasts love to talk of its Machiavellian intricacies for hours on end, but most people, especially north of the Alps, not only do not understand it, but see no reason why they should bother to understand it. Today there are at least three reasons why they should. First, in Italy the crisis of the political establishment that is now evident in many advanced democracies began a quarter century ago. This means that the country is further down the road of the democratic malaise – it is a laboratory and a bellwether. Second, Italy is the first country from within the historical core of the European community to be governed by anti-establishment parties. Third, its politics represent the greatest threat to the stability, or possibly even the existence, of the common European currency. Founded in 2010 in a University that has a very strong international vocation, the Luiss School of Government aims to facilitate the connection between Italy and the world outside of it.

GR OVES , AND REEM AL SHQOU R Introduction After ten seasons in the field, the archaeological excavations at Tall Jalul, led by the Institute of Archaeology at Andrews University under the directorship of Randall W. Younker, have resulted in significant clarification of the site’s occupation.1 Located on the rolling Madaba Plains in the central Jordanian plateau, Jalul rises above the plain, creating the highest elevation in the immediate Madaba region. As the largest ancient site in central Jordan, the early occupation of ancient Jalul covers more than 7 hectares (the equivalent of 18 acres), while later Islamic Jalul, referred to as the Jalul Islamic Village (JIV), covers about 28 hectares or 69 acres.2 History of Exploration Several early explorers mention the ancient site of Jalul in their travel accounts. Swiss explorer Johann Burckhardt visited Jalul in 1812, and in 1822 wrote one of the earliest descriptions of the site: “In order to see Medaba, I left the great road at Hesban, and proceeded in a more eastern direction. At six hours and three quarters, about one hour distant from the road, I saw the ruins of Djeloul, at a short distance to the east of which, are the ruined places called El Samek, El Mesouh, and Om el Aamed.”3 1Previous reports from other Madaba Plains Project sites in AUSS include Lawrence T.
