Isaiah 44:6-23 Gods made of wood 1. Introduction The book of Isaiah emphasizes God’s greatness. His greatness manifests itself in creation and in how he governs history. But God’s greatness is equally apparent in the comparison between him and the idols. Isaiah 44 openly mocks those who fashion and worship idols. The idols and those who made them are as it were called to defend themselves in court. God challenges them to show their greatness, but the silence is deafening. It looks like idol worship no longer exists, but appearances are deceptive. Even today this chapter of Isaiah poses some very relevant questions. What has Western society accomplished with the gods of their own making? What does the future hold for you if you do not seek your salvation in the living God? 2. General Remarks 1. Idols cannot help With great irony, almost sarcastically, God shows us how ridiculous the idols are and how ridiculous it is to trust in them. This mocking of the idols has to be seen in light of the circumstances God’s people were in. God allows Isaiah to speak about the future of the people of Israel. We do not know exactly at what point in time the people heard these words. It is possible that they were already spoken before the deportation. It is also possible that the people did not hear or read these words until they actually were in exile. For our understanding of these words it does not make much difference. The people of Judah are in grave danger as far as their existence as a nation is concerned. -

The Maccabees Page 1 The Maccabees (Hasmoneans) HASMONEANS hazʹme-nēʹenz [Gk Asamomaios; Heb ḥašmônay]. In the broader sense the term Hasmonean refers to the whole “Maccabean” family. According to Josephus (Ant. xii.6.1 [265]), Mattathias, the first of the family to revolt against Antiochus IV’s demands, was the great-grandson of Hashman. This name may have derived from the Heb ḥašmān, perhaps meaning “fruitfulness,” “wealthy.” Hashman was a priest of the family of Joarib (cf. 1 Macc. 2:1; 1 Ch. 24:7). The narrower sense of the term Hasmonean has reference to the time of Israel’s independence beginning with Simon, Mattathias’s last surviving son, who in 142 B.C. gained independence from the Syrian control, and ending with Simon’s great-grandson Hyrcanus II, who submitted to the Roman general Pompey in 63 B.C. Remnants of the Hasmoneans continued until A.D. 100. I. Revolt of the Maccabees The Hasmonean name does not occur in the books of Maccabees, but appears in Josephus several times (Ant. xi.4.8 [111]; xii.6.1 [265]; xiv.16.4 [490f]; xv.11.4 [403]; xvi.7.1 [187]; xvii.7.3 [162]; xx.8.11 [190]; 10.3 [238]; 10.5 [247, 249]; BJ i.7 [19]; 1.3 [36]; Vita 1 [2, 4]) and once in the Mishnah (Middoth i.6). These references include the whole Maccabean family beginning with Mattathias. In 166 B.C. Mattathias, the aged priest in Modein, refused to obey the order of Antiochus IV’s envoy to sacrifice to the heathen gods, and instead slew the envoy and a Jew who was about to comply. -

Heshbon (Modern Hesbdn) Is Located in Transj Ordan
THE HISTORY OF HESHBON FROM LITERARY SOURCES * WERNER VYHMEISTER River Plate College, Puiggari, Entre Rios, Argentina Heshbon (modern Hesbdn) is located in Transjordan, about 20 miles east of the Jordan where it enters the Dead Sea. The remains of the old city are covered now by two hills, 2,930 and 2,954 feet above sea level respectively. According to the latest available statistics (from 1961), the village of Hesbdn has 718 inhabitants. Heshbon in OT Times Heshbon appears for the first time in the Biblical record as the capital city of Sihon, the Amorite king defeated by Moses. However, the region in which Heshbon was located is mentioned much earlier in the Bible. In Gn 14:5, Chedor- laomer and his confederates appear as smiting successively the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh Kiriathaim (i.e., the plain of Kiria- thaim). Kiriathaim has been identified with el-Qerei ydt, about five miles northwest of Dhz'bdn. Mayes Much of the Mosaic legislation contained in the Pentateuch seems foreign to the modern reader. The laws concerning the priesthood, the sacrificial system, and the religious holidays are neither practiced nor paralleled in the dispensation of the church. Though they do have didactic and illustrative value as types of the work of Christ, they are often rushed over or skipped altogether in personal Bible study. The Old Testament legislation concerning so-called moral law has received greater attention. Since it addresses many issues which are also social problems in the twentieth century, it is frequently lifted from its Old Testament context and applied to contemporary society. Provisions for dealing with cases of adultery, homosexuality, theft, and murder in Israel are a few of the regulations which commonly receive such treatment. Several minority political/religious groups even advocate a complete return to Old Testament-style political regulations and policies. It is within the context of this debate that the Old Testament legal provisions concerning the city of refuge should be studied. These cities were designated locations to which one who was guilty of accidental homicide1 could flee in order to receive legal protection and a fair trial. Introduction to Deuteronomy
RS 2DD3 – Five Books of Moses, A. Y. Reed November 17, 2004 Introduction to Deuteronomy 1. Content and Themes · Within the narrative of the redacted form of the Pentateuch, Deuteronomy follows from Numbers inasmuch as it takes place in the Transjordan (near the eastern shore of the Jordan River). Narrative time here slows to describe Moses’ last days. · Events described include covenant renewal (27-30), the authorization of Joshua as Moses’ successor (31), Moses’ blessing of the tribes (33), and finally his death on Mount Nebo (34). · As in Leviticus, however, narratives are secondary to laws and teachings. These are framed in terms of Moses’ three speeches to the people prior to his death (1:1-4:43; 4:44-26:19 + 28; 29-30). In the redacted form of the Pentateuch, this form finds precedent, quite significantly, in Jacob/Israel’s deathbed speech to his sons at the end of Genesis (48-49). In comparison to Exodus, Leviticus, and Numbers, the use of this form is striking; whereas these books frame their laws and teachings as speeches of God to the people via Moses, Deuteronomy frames its teachings as Moses’ own words. · In content, the speeches look back to the experience of Exodus and Wandering and look forward to the people’s entry into the Promised Land, as described in the book of Joshua. In its present setting in the Hebrew Bible, it thus serves as both the conclusion to the Pentateuch and the introduction to the Former Prophets (Joshua, Judges, 1 and 2 Samuel, 1 and 2 Kings). -

THE EGYPT-PALESTINE/ISRAEL BOUNDARY: 1841-1992 An Abstract of a Thesis .Submitted In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the ~egree Master of Arts Thabit Abu-Rass University of Northern Iowa July 1992 ABSTRACT In 1841, with the involvement of European powers, the Ottoman Empire distinguished by Firman territory subject to a Khedive of Egypt from that subject more directly to Istanbul. With British pressure in 1906, a more formal boundary was established between Egypt and Ottoman Palestine. This study focuses on these events and on the history from 1841 to the present. The study area includes the Sinai peninsula and extends from the Suez Canal in the west to what is today southern Israel from Ashqelon on the Mediterranean to the southern shore of the Dead Sea in the east.
