Folks have been making these by hand here in America since the 19th century. Musicmakers has made it easy for you to join this rich tradition with two different syles of mountain dulcimers. The hourglass style is a more traditional shape and the teardrop style is slightly easier to build. Expect to spend between 20-30 hours building from our pre-cut kit. Add- ing some decorative inlay banding (page 27) around the edge is great way to customize this project. You’ll need a router if you want to do that.

The Hammered Dulcimer is a fascinating instrument to play. You strike the strings with hammers and each note rings out beautifully, making even simple, un- adorned melodies sound rich and full. The rhythmic possibilites inherent in the striking style of the hammers make this a fun percussive instrument too.

Our pre-cut kit takes about 20-30 hours to build. You’ll want a good supply of clamps, a power sander, and a drill press for this project. Micah is not quite five. He was able to help with the sanding, screwing the neck to the box (after I drilled the holes), holding one end of the strings taut while I tied the knots, threading the strings through the holes in the tuning pins, and turning the tuning key. It was his choice to mount the neck on the bottom of the box so he can open the secret compartment more easily. I glued on the toothpicks, broke off the ends and applied the hand- rubbed (tung oil) finish.

MUSICMAKERS SUPREME COURT - CLASS OF 2016 30 651-439-9120 For the past 16 years I have watched Jerry share his joy and creativity with countless souls. He’s been helping people build musical instruments for a long time now and decided the time was right to retire. My wife, Stephanie, and I are thrilled and honored to take on the role of ownership and to continue the work Jerry began 37 years ago.

My background couldn’t be better suited to Musicmakers. I enjoy playing an eclectic array of music on guitar and mandolin and I am a complete nerd about lutherie and woodworking. Ask me about how to sharpen a chisel or about bracing patterns on guitars and I’m likely to talk your ear off. I have a background in science education and a passion for teaching and lifelong learning. Basically, if you drew a venn diagram of my passions, Musicmakers would be right there in the middle.

Stephanie has a social services background and has spent the last 15 years working with battered women and homeless mothers. She will be helping out part time in the office as well as continuing to work part time as a family coach. She is excited to get involved in Musicmakers and is particularly interested in the music therapy aspect of what we do.

I couldn’t do this alone and I’m thankful I don’t have to. We have an amazing team here at Musicmak- ers. Cody, Mikaela, Matt, and Sharon keep the front office humming while Zach, Tim, and I make the sawdust fly. And Jerry isn’t ready to leave quite yet. He’ll still be working his wonders 3 days a week.

We have something wonderful at Musicmakers. The experience of building and playing musical instruments is something worth sharing with the world and I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity to do so.
