Our Response

The map opposite shows an estimate of how long the fire engine will take to reach residents in Yeovil from the time they make the call. It will naturally take us longer to get places further away from the station.

Residents of Yeovil should take the following precautions to help keep them safe from fire:

 Fit a working smoke alarm  Take care when cooking and never leave cooking food unattended  Plan and practise your escape route  Make a bedtime check  Don't overload your electrics  Put cigarettes right out  Use candles carefully  Have your chimney swept regularly

Prevention and Protection

We maintain a very simple philosophy that prevention is better than cure and we recognise that risk reduction begins with safe behaviours at home, at work, or on the road, and this leads to a safer society for all. We have developed a community safety strategy to focus our work and set our levels of resourcing where we have most risk. Using our knowledge, along with that of local organisations and partners we will target those people and properties that are more likely to be affected by fire and other emergencies, according to our risk analysis and risk profiling. The risks identified at Yeovil station have been identified below, our prevention and protection work will be prioritised accordingly.

Yeovil One Team Yeovil Fire Station are members of the Yeovil One Team that meets weekly. The Yeovil One Team is a multi-agency integrated model for a combined neighbourhood service delivery that covers Yeovil town centre. The Yeovil One Team meets to share intelligence and knowledge across partner agencies including the , South Somerset District Council, NHS, Social Housing Organisations and a variety of outreach service providers with the aim to tackle and reduce anti-social behaviour, depravation and build local community resilience. Through our membership of the Yeovil One Team we are able to reduce the risk within Yeovil, make the community safer and with our partners support vulnerable members of the community. The group has been so successful that it is being expanded geographically to address these same issues outside of the town centre area. Additionally Yeovil Fire Station has recently taken the role of hosting the weekly meetings.

Partnership Based Joint Safety Initiatives Staff at Yeovil Fire Station are working in partnership with South Somerset District Council, Getset and Mothercare to arrange targeted home and road safety events for the summer period. These events will include road safety advice relating to the correct selection and fitting of baby and child car seats. These partnership and events will enabled us to improve the safety of families and their children in their homes and when travelling on the roads. There is a strong desire with our partners to expand this initiative to a regional stage through a joint safety stand at the Bath & West Show.

GP Surgery Partnership By working closely with GPs surgeries and health clinics, staff from Yeovil were able to successfully target senior citizens for Home Fire Safety Visits during the annual flu vaccination programme. Plans are underway to develop these partnerships further and to offer targeted assistance to those living with mobility issues whereby easy evacuation from their homes is compromised in the event of a fire situation.
