Remember what happened in the battle between celestials and demons in the olden times. There the enemy destroyed almost every thing except your life". tatra chaapi mayaa deva yattvam samabhirakshitah | jaagratyaa yatamaanaayaastato me praadadaa varau || 2-11-19 "Oh, King! There, I saved you. Hence you gave boon to myself who was attentive in trying to save you." It is filled with women who had the fortitude and determination to stand up against all odds ones who set a great example for generations to come. Ramayana is full of women, who were mentally way stronger than the glorified heroes of this great Indian epic. From Jhansi Ki Rani to Irom Sharmila, From Savitribai Fule to Sonia Gandhi and From Jijabai to Seeta, Indian women have always stood up for their rights and fought their battles despite restrictions and limitations. They are the shining beacons of hope and have displayed exemplary dedication in their respective fields. I have studied few characters of Ramayana who teaches us the importance of commitment, ethical values, principles of life, dedication & devotion in relationship and most importantly making us believe in women power. K. NARAYAN was born on October 10, 1906, in Madras, South India, and educated there and at Maharaja’s College in Mysore.     Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) Mahila Shibir 2020 East and South Midlands Vibhag FOREWORD INSPIRING AND UNPRECEDENTED INITIATIVE In an era of mass consumerism - not only of material goods - but of information, where society continues to be led by dominant and parochial ideas, the struggle to make our stories heard, has been limited. But the tides are slowly turning and is being led by the collaborative strength of empowered Hindu women from within our community. The Covid-19 pandemic has at once forced us to cancel our core programs - which for decades had brought us together to pursue our mission to develop value-based leaders - but also allowed us the opportunity to collaborate in other, more innovative ways. It gives me immense pride that Hindu Sevika Samiti (UK) have set a new precedent for the trajectory of our work. As a follow up to the successful Mahila Shibirs in seven vibhags attended by over 500 participants, 342 Mahila sevikas came together to write 411 articles on seven different topics which will be presented in the form of seven e-books. I am very delighted to launch this collection which explores topics such as: The uniqueness of Bharat, Ramayan ki Kathayen, Pandemic and the Hindu way of life and The contribution of Hindu women, amongst others. From writing to editing, content checking to proofreading, the entire project was conducted by our Sevikas. This project has revealed hidden talents of many mahilas in writing essays and articles. We hope that these skills are further encouraged and nurtured to become good writers which our community badly lacks.

    APPENDIX B: READ ALOUD VERSION OF THE RAMAYANA, ADAPTED BY SARAH WILLNER Part 1: The Early Life of Rama The entire kingdom of Ayodhya in India shared the sadness of their king, Dasharatha, who had three wives but no children. In deep meditation, he was told how to enact a ceremony and distill a pure butter to give to his wives. After drinking it, they became pregnant and had many sons. The King’s servant Mergdah discussed the magical qualities of the butter. “How come that doesn’t work for me?” Merdah’s old and wise father, also a valued servant of the King, replied, “Any old but- ter won’t do. It’s the meditation that makes it work.” The King’s favorite son was Prince Rama, son of his wife Kausalya, who was studious, brave, thoughtful, and loyal. Everyone agreed that Rama should become king after his father. His father decided to hold the inauguration before he died, to make sure that his choice would be carried out peacefully. Tualen and Merdah kept to the King’s side around the clock to carry his wishes to the people. Fabulous preparations were made for the ceremony. People came from all over the kingdom to attend the inauguration of their beloved Prince Rama. Part 2: Rama’s Exile But all did not go as just as planned. On the eve of the ceremony, another of Dasharatha’s wives, Queen Kaikeyi, was overcome with jealousy. Why shouldn’t her son, Bharata, Rama’s brother, become king? Was he not as good as Rama? She remembered that long ago she had taken very good care of King Dasharatha after he received a wound on the battlefield and he had promised to grant her a wish ..

    Quick guide to the Ramayana bl.uk /onlinegallery/whatson/exhibitions/ramayana/guide.html Background The Ramayana is an ancient Sanskrit epic which follows Prince Rama's quest to rescue his beloved wife Sita from the clutches of Ravana with the help of an army of monkeys. It is traditionally attributed to the authorship of the sage Valmiki and dated to around 500 BCE to 100 BCE. Comprising 24,000 verses in seven cantos, the epic contains the teachings of the very ancient Hindu sages. One of the most important literary works of ancient India, it has greatly influenced art and culture in the Indian subcontinent and South East Asia, with versions of the story also appearing in the Buddhist canon from a very early date. The story of Rama has constantly been retold in poetic and dramatic versions by some of India's greatest writers and also in narrative sculptures on temple walls. It is one of the staples of later dramatic traditions, re-enacted in dance-dramas, village theatre, shadow-puppet theatre and the annual Ram-lila (Rama-play). Origins The original five books of an oral epic of local northern significance dealing with a hero and his exile, the abduction of his wife by a rival king and her rescue became conflated into seven books in which the hero Rama became an avatar of the god Vishnu, the scene shifted to encompass the whole of India, and the struggle to recover his wife became a metaphor for the final triumph of the righteous. A brief summary of the Ramayana Rama, prince of Ayodhya, won the hand of the beautiful princess Sita (seen here), but was exiled with her and his brother Laksmana for 14 years through the plotting of his stepmother.
