Ayodhya rejoiced and flourished under King Dasaratha and the good natured sons of the King. King Dasaratha felt it was time to crown Rama as the future King of Ayodhya. Dasaratha: Rama my dear son, I have decided that you will now become the Yuvaraja of Ayodhya and I would like to advice you on how to rule the kingdom. Rama 2: I will do what you wish O father! Let me get your blessings and mother Kausalya’s blessings. (Rama bows to Dasaratha and goes to Kausalya) Kausalya: Rama, I bless you to rule this kingdom just like your father. Narrator: In the mean time, Manthara, Kaikeyi’s maid hatches out an evil plan. Manthara: Kaikeyi, have you heard that Rama will be the king! Kaikeyi: Yes, Manthara, I am happy to hear this and cant wait to see Rama. Here, I have some gifts for you, for delivering the good news about Rama becoming the King. Manthara: O Kaikeyi! Why would Dasaratha, crown Rama the King, while sending Bharata to Kekaya to be with his grandfather? Don’t you think this is not right and not in Bharata’s favor. What will happen to your own son? Shouldn’t he be part of the kingdom. I think Bharata is fit to be the future king! Kaikeyi: Manthara! What are you saying? You are right, that this news comes while Bharata is not in Ayodhya. There is something not right about it. Manthara: Kaikeyi, use the 2 boons that Dasaratha gave you and you will now be the mother of the future king. (Kaikeyi sits on the floors, throws her jewellery and weeps) Dasaratha: Kaikeyi, did you hear that Rama will be the King? Kaikeyi, what’s wrong? Kaikeyi: Why would you name Rama to be the king, when Bharata is out? Remember the 2 boons you gave me? Dasaratha: Ask Kaikeyi, what do you want? Kaikeyi: I would like Bharata to be become the King and Rama sent to the forest for 14 years. Dasaratha: Kaikeyi! (Rama 2, Sita 2, Lakshmana bow to Dasaratha and Kausalya and leave for the forest) Narrator: Unable to be separated from Rama, Dasaratha, falls sick and dies) Bharata 1: O Mother! What happened to father suddenly? He was fine when I left. Kaikeyi: Bharata, I am so happy to see you. The King was unwell for a while. Bharata 1: Where is Rama? Kaikeyi: The king wanted Rama to become the future ruler of Ayodhya. I used my boons to make you the King Bharata! You are fit to be the King, go rule Ayodhya now. Bharata 1: Mother, how can you do this? What made you think of this? I want to see my brother Rama now. Kaikeyi: Rama will not return from the forest for 14 years. Bharata 1: How did you have the heart to do this, I am bringing back Rama now, no one else can be the King of Ayodhya! Forest Scene: Bharata2: Rama! Please return to Ayodhya. I am sorry for what my mother did. Father passed away in sadness and not being able to see you. Rama 3: Father passed away? O Bharata, I am very sad to hear that. Bharata: The people of Ayodhya are sad. Only you can bring life back to Ayodhya, please return O Rama! Rama 3: Bharata! I have to uphold my promise to my father. I also cannot break the boons that father gave to Mother Kaikeyi. Bharata 2: No Rama, I will talk to mother Kaikeyi. Rama 3: No Bharata! I will not enter Ayodhya, until my 14 years of forest life is complete. Bharata 2: Then, I am firm that Ayodhya will only have Rama as its King. At least, give me your padukas, I will place it on the throne, in your absence, until you return. (Bharata returns to Ayodhya, with Rama’s padukas) Aranya Kanda: Surpanaka: Rama, O handsome Rama!,I am Surpanaka, the great Lanka King Ravana’s sister. I would like to marry you.
