Manthara Turns Kaikeyi Against Rama “Om Sri Lakshmi Narashimhan Nahama” Valmiki Ramayana – Ayodhya Kanda – Chapter 8 Manthara Turns Kaikeyi Against Rama Summary Manthara with her wicked thoughts tries to convince Kaikeyi of the possible misfortune that could occur to Kaikeyi and her family if Sri Rama becomes the King. Although Kaikeyi's initial reaction is to praise Rama's qualities; her mind is slowly but surely poisoned by Manathara's sinful words. Chapter [Sarga] 8 in Detail mantharaa tvabhyasuuyainaamutsrijyaabharanam cha tat| uvaachedam tato vaakyam kopaduhkhasamanvitaa || 2-8-1 Manthara, becoming indignant with Kaikeyi, threw down the ornament given to her and with anger and distress spoke the following words: harshham kimidamasthaane kritavatyasi baalishe | shokasaagaramadhyasthamaatmaanam naavabudhyase || 2-8-2 "O, foolish one! Not knowing that you are in the midst of an ocean of trouble, what is it that you are so delighted about, in a matter to be grieved?" Does any intelligent woman feel happy over the prosperity of a stepson who is considered an enemy? Does it not amount to praising a befalling death?" bharataadeva raamasya raajyasaadhaaranaadbhayam | tadvichintya vishhannaasmi bhaya bhiitaaddhi jaayate || 2-8-5 "Rama has a fear about Bharata because Bharata has equal rights over the kingdom. In thinking about this matter, I am getting anguished. Do we not get disasters from those who are afraid of us?" lakshmano hi maheshhvaaso raamam sarvaatmanaa gatah | shatrughnashchaapi bharatam kaakutthsam lakshmano yathaa || 2-8-6 "Lakshmana, wielding a great bow, joined Rama with all his heart. Shatrughna is as faithful to Bharata as Lakshmana to Rama". pratyaasannakramenaapi bharatastaiva bhaamini | raajyakramo viprakrishhtastayostaavatkaniiyasoh || 2-8-7 "Oh Kaikeyi! In line with even the proximity of birth; the claim to the throne of Bharata alone can be pressed, that of Lakshmana and Satrughna who are younger is out of question." His actions are timely and appropriate. Why are you so pained on hearing about Rama's coronation?" bharatashchaapi raamasya dhruvam varshhashataatparam | pitripaitaamaham raajyamavaaptaa purushharshhabhah || 2-8-16 "After Rama's rule for one hundred years, Bharata the best among men will certainly replace Rama on his father's throne, which is that of his ancestors." saa tvamabhyudaye praapte vartamaane cha manthare | bhavishhyati cha kalyaane kimartham paritapyase || 2-8-17 "Oh, Manthara! When we got an occasion for rejoicing as at present and when a festive occasion is to come off in future (too in the form of Bharata's installation, no matter even if it comes after a hundred years), why do you feel agonized like this as though burning (with jealousy)?" • 9 Ever Remember the Name of Rama
103 9 Ever Remember The Name Of Rama HOUSANDS of years have passed since the Tadvent of Treta Yuga, yet even now everyone, right from children to elderly people, remember the name of Rama. The glory of Rama’s name is such that it has not diminished even a bit with the passage of time. This truth should be recognised by all. Rama is the name given to a form, but the name of Rama is not limited to a form. Atma is Rama, and its true name is Atmarama. Therefore, wherever and whenever you remember the name of Rama, Rama is there with you, in you, around you. The Name Of Rama Is Eternal Embodiments of Love! Rama is one, whether you identify him with the 104 SATHYA SAI SPEAKS, Volume 40 atma or with the form installed in your heart. Every year comes the festival of Sri Rama Navami. But we have not so far understood its true significance. You identify Rama with a form. But Rama is not limited to any particular form. It is the name that is latent in your heart. Many changes and variations keep occurring in the world, but the name of Rama is immutable, eternal, unsullied and everlasting. Rama was not an ordinary individual. He was verily God who incarnated on earth for the welfare of mankind. People call God by many names like Rama, Krishna, Easwara and Mahadeva. They are all the names of one God. You should recognise the glory of this name. Sage Vasishta said, “Ramo vigrahavan Dharma” (Rama is the personification of Dharma).

Here in Trinidad I had discovered that one of the greatest epics of the world was seasonally performed, not with that desperate resignation of preserving a culture, but with an openness of belief that was as steady as the wind bending the cane lances of the Caroni plain. —Derek Walcott, Nobel Prize Lecture (1992) As a child living in Wagoner, Oklahoma, I was enlisted by my Baptist evangelist father both to play the piano for his monthly hymn singing fests and to “teach” Wednesday night Bible classes. “What,” I asked my father, “shall I tell these people? I don’t know anything about the Bible.” “Oh,” he responded, “neither do they. Just make it up, but always assure them that—as our good hymn says—they are all ‘sitting in the lap of God.’ That’s what they want to know.” So week after week, while I unwittingly practiced for my future vocation, some dozen or so Baptist parishioners were asked by a nine-year-old girl to sit together “in the lap of God.” Having no idea what that meant, I conjured up an image of a gray-bearded, department store Santa/God with all of us piling at once into his opulent lap.

  • Sri Rama Navami
Sri Rama Navami On Chaitra Sukla Navami (the ninth day of the bright half of Chaitra) 'Sree Ramanavami' is celebrated. Sree Rama was born on this day and years later on the same day Rama married Sita. 'Sree Sitarama Kalyana Mahotsav' (wedding) is performed in the abode Sitarama Temple, Bhadrachalam, Khammam District, Andhra Pradesh with great tradition and Bhakti. On behalf of Andhra Pradesh Government, Chief Minister with his wife visits the Kalyana Mahotsav and offers Silk Clothes and Pearls as Talambralu (auspicious) to the God and Goddess. The whole of this celebration is telecasted live in Doordarshan. "Wherever four Hindus live, Rama and Sita will be there" so said Swami Vivekananda, one of the foremost harbingers of modern national renaissance of Bharat. The reverse also is equally true - wherever Rama and Sita live, the people there will remain and live as Hindus. Every hill and rivulet of Bharat bears the imprint of the holy feet of Rama and Sita. Sri Rama reigns supreme to this day in the hearts of our people, cutting across all barriers of province, language, caste or sect. Even the tribes living in isolated valleys and jungles have names like Mitti-Ram and Patthar-Ram. In some other tribes, every name carries the proud suffix of Ram, such as Lutthu Ram, Jagadev Ram, etc. In many northern parts of Bharat mutual greetings take the form of Jay Ramjee Ki. Sri Rama has become so much identified with all the good and great and virile qualities of heroic manhood that expressions such as 'Us me Ram nahi hai' (there is no Rama in him) - meaning that a person has lost all manliness and worth - have become common usage.
