For this reason, I would like to point to the paradigm shift which occurred not only in American literary/poetry studies, but also in art history during the 1990s. This paradigm shift advocates the replacement of ‘pure’ literary study or ‘pure’ art history with, as Anthony Easthope has stated, “the more comprehensive analysis of … signifying practice” known as cultural studies. The media and state leadership have a strong and inseparable link in the history of the media. In totalitarian regimes, the government finances and controls the media, in regimes with apartheid elements the government closes the media that does not like, persecutes and kills journalists. In democratic societies, state leadership and the media have a financial connection in most of the cases. This paper will address a very specific media situation, that of Montenegro in 1999. Montenegro was part of the former Yugoslavia, which was committing genocide against Kosovo Albanians. But the main media in Montenegro, starting with the public broadcaster, the radio as part of it, and the main newspapers, marked a rare case when the media does not obey the government but takes the side of people in need - Kosovar refugees who, fleeing extermination, sought refuge in Montenegro.

I know that in the last three generations there was only one girl and in my generation I was the first girl born in the Dobruna family.

I. The rise of Albanian theatre to 1945 Professional theatre has always been the prerogative of an urban society. In Albania, which has always had a strong rural population and lacked large urban centres, theatre never developed to the extent that literary poetry and prose did, nor did it ever capture the attention of the Albanian public to any substantial extent. There is little in the way of Albanian theatre to report on before the second half of the nineteenth century and, in actual fact, little professional theatre at all before the second half of the twentieth century. The first Albanian-language plays were written in the second half of the nineteenth century but we have little information as to whether they were actually performed, or even meant to be performed. The earliest original Albanian drama is no doubt the melodramatic Emira by Albanian writer Francesco Antonio Santori (1819-1894) of the Arbëresh village Santa Caterina Albanese (Alb. Picilia) in the province of Cosenza. Santori wrote a number of other rnelodramatic plays: both comedies and tragedies, not all of which were completed. These remained in manuscript form during his lifetime. Among them are the tragedy Jeroboam and the Scanderbegian melodrama Alessio Dukagino, written between 1855 and 18602 Rilindja ieologist and scholar Sami Frashëri (1850-1904) was author of a 180-page play written in Turkish entitled Besa yahud ahde vefa, (Besa or the fulilment of the pledge).

    UNDER ORDERS “Unidentified.” © fred abrahams / human rights watch 1 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY his report documents torture, killings, rapes, forced expul- Tsions, and other war crimes committed by Serbian and Yugoslav government forces against Kosovar Albanians between March 24 and June 12, 1999, the period of NATO’s air campaign against Yugoslavia. The report reveals a coordinated and systematic campaign to terrorize, kill, and expel the ethnic Albanians of Kosovo that was organized by the highest levels of the Serbian and Yugoslav governments in power at that time. Naturally, these crimes did not occur in isolation. This report outlines the historical and political context of the war, with a critique of the interna- tional community’s response to the developing crisis over the past decade. Three chapters also document abuses committed by the ethnic Albanian insurgency known as the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), which abducted and murdered civilians during and after the war, as well as abuses by NATO, which failed adequately to minimize civilian casualties during its bombing of Yugoslavia. Nevertheless, the primary focus of this report is the state- sponsored violence inflicted by the Serbian and Yugoslav governments in 1999 against ethnic Albanian citizens of Yugoslavia.
