SUMMARY by:JanBuysandJeroenWillemsen FromJuly27thuntilAugust4th2005,theVeldwerkgroep(VWG)oftheDutchMammalSociety (Zoogdiervereniging)paidavisittothePol’anaBiospherereservein.Aworkshopinthesummerisa traditionalpartoftheVWG’syearlyprogram,aimedatsurveyingmammalspecieswhicharerareorabsent intheNetherlands,andtoextendandexchangeknowledgeofsurveymethodsandspecies.Secondly,these workshopsabroadaimtoenlargetheknowledgeofpresenceandabundanceof,andtoalesser extentofotherfaunagroups,intheareavisited.ThePol’anaBiospherereserveissituatedinthecentralpart ofSlovakiaandcoversvastareasofforestedhills,intermingledwithagriculturalsettlements. Surveyingbatswasoneofthecoreactivitiesduringtheworkshop,applyingalmostallavailablemethods:bat detectors,netsandcheckingforroostsinanytypeofbuilding.Thisproducedalotofnewdataonbatroosts (mainlycoloniesofbatsinchurchlofts)andthespeciespresentinthearea.Extraordinarywasthecatchingof agreaternoctule (Nyctalus lasiopterus) inanettingsessioninthenorthernpartofthearea.Thiswasthe thirdspecimenofthisspeciesrecordedinSlovakiaever. Intheworkshopsmallmammalsweresurveyedbysettingoutavarietyoflivetrapsinlinesat7locationsin thesoutheasternpartofthearea,mainlynearthevillageofLátky.Overall12speciesofmiceandshrew werecaught. Alltogether54speciesofmammalswereencouteredduringtheworkshopsuchaswolf,wildboar,pineand beechmarten,redsquirrel,weaselandotter.Absolutehighlightoftheworkshopwasthesightingofafemale lynxwithtwocubsbythreeoftheparticipants.Apartfrommammals,considerableattentionwasgivento birds,butterfliesanddragonflies.Thisyieldedobservationsof91birdspecies,75butterflyspecies,31 grasshopperandcricketsspeciesand21dragonflyspecies.Alsoalotofobservationsofamphibiansand reptilesweremadeaswell(15species). AlltheobservationsarerecordedinadatabasethatcanbeobtainedfromtheVeldwerkgroep ([email protected]).

Thus,theinformationgatheredismorelikelytofinditswayintotheprotectionandmanagementofthearea ingeneralandofmammalsinparticular.The2005workshopwasorganisedincooperationwiththeSlovak AcademyofSciencesInstituteofForestEcology.Oureverenthusiastic,skilledandsmarthostwasPeter Ka ňuch.FromourhomesteadinLátky,intheluxuriouslocalTouristiclodginghouse,surveysonthe presenceofmice,batsandothermammalswerecarriedout. Withanareaof1.9millionhectaresofforest(38% oftheentirecountry)Slovakiaisoneofthewoodiest countriesinEurope.Ofthatarea,1.5millionhais exploited.Inthewoodsbearsarelivingaswellas wolves,lynxes,wildcatsanddeer.

Slovakiahasrangeditselfintotheeconomic Photo:JanBuys forefrontofCentralEurope.However,adichotomy hasdevelopedbetweencityandcountryside:therich citywithits(primarilyautomobile)industryandthe poorcountrysidethatisabandonedbyanyonewho wantstogotocollege.Thishascausedan Diverse landscape types around Látky. enormoussocial,culturalandpoliticalgapinthe country. SlovakiahasjoinedtheEuropeanUniononMay1 st ,2004andsincethennewimpulseshavebeengivento thecountryside,especiallytothesectoroftourism(networksofwalkingandcyclingtracksandskiingareas). Unfortunatelytheexpandingtourismandtheexploitationofhuntinggrounds,whichattractmanyWest Europeanhunters,causeathreattothevaluableecosystem.Becauseofindustrializationandairpollution (acidrain)manytrees,plantandanimalspeciesarethreatenedorevenbecameextinctinthelastdecades.

PhysicalgeographyPhysicalgeography ThelandscapeofSlovakiathatcoincideswiththeCarpathianArc,showsaverycomplicatedstructure.Justlikethe Alps,theCarpathiansformacomplexlandscapethatiscalledinDutch“dekbladenlandschap”,butthearticulationis totallydifferent.Asaresultofcontinuousrupturemovementsoftheearthcrust,theoriginal(chainof)Carpathian mountainsisfragmentedintoalargenumberofsmallmountainswithbasinlandscapesinbetween.IntheWestern Carpathians,betweentheDanubeatBratislavaandtheDuklapass,adoubleseriesofsmallmassivesoccurs,the centerofwhichconsistsofgraniteandcrystallineslate,whicharemutuallyconnectedbyPermianandChalklayers. These“cores”formthehighestpartsofthemountainousarea,mostlyintheHighandLowTatra.Anotherpartofthe WesternCarpathianshoweverconsistsofstronglyfoldedMesozoicsedimentaryrock.Southofthisareaarethe SlovakianOreMountains,whichhaveacrystallinecomposition.Totheeastofit,onlyseparatedbytheEastern Slovakianlowland,istheHergyallachainexistingofvolcanicrock.TheWesternSlovakianlowlandisseparatedby theSmallCarpathians,consistingofgranite. Mammal survey Pol'ana (Slovakia) 2005 11 2.2POL’ANABIOSPHERERESERVE ThemagnificentareaofthePol’anaisasmallnaturereserveintheSlovakianOreMountains.Theareawas declared“BiosphereReserve”byUNESCOin1990.ThePol’anaisthemostprominentmountaininthis areaandasymbol,chantedbypoets.Itstillcontainsinterestingrocksandresiduesofvolcaniceruptions. Thepicturesquelandscapeatthefootofthemountainexcelsinnaturalbeauty;forest,brooksandmineral wellsoccurbutalsoanexceptional,stillliving,naturalculturecanbefoundthere.ThevolcanoPol’ana (1458m)isoneofthehighest,nolongerworkingvolcanoesinEuropefromwhereonehasabeautifulview overtheSlovakianOreMountainsoftheLowandHighTatra.Ontheslopesofthemountainsandinthe valleysthefarmandgrasslandisstillextensivelyworkedoninsmallallotments.Manysmallfarmsareself supportingandproductsareexchangedonthelocalmarket.Forfanaticsofmammalsthissituationinthe countrysidearoundthefarmsproducesarangeofobservations. Thecampsitewassituatedonanaltitudeof850metersinthesmallvillageofLátkyinthePol’anahilly landscape.Theaccommodationwassituatedinaconcretehotelcolossusfromthepasttimesof communism,whereitseemedasiftimestoodstill.Supperwasservedoutofanimpressiveandbigkitchen, butthevegetariansamongtheworkshopmembershavehadareallytoughtime.Dinnerwasservedinan adjacent–former–conferenceroom,whereimpressiveandbigphotographsofgrufflypoliticiansdecorated thewalls. 3.1 MISTNETTING by:KamielSpoelstra Duringtheworkshop,intotal16nettingattemptshave beenmadeinandaroundthePol’anareserve.Intotal 120batsof17specieswerecaught: Myotis daubentonii (19), Myotis nattereri (1), Myotis mystacinus (6), Myotis brandtii (1), Myotis bechsteini (1), Myotis myotis (15), Myotis blythi (4), Myotis myotis/blythii (1), Plecotus auritus

(4), Plecotus austriacus (1), Nyctalus lasiopterus (1), Photo:KamielSpoelstra Nyctalus noctula (10), Nyctalus leisleri (13), Vespertilio murinus (10), Eptesicus serotinus (10), Eptesicus nilsonii (14), Barbastella barbastellus (8)and Pipistrellus pipistrellus (1).Inallnettingattemptsnetswereplaced eitheroversmallstreamsorsmallpondswhererelatively highnumberofbatscanbecaught.Allbatscaughtrely ontheseplaces,soprobablyastrongbiasmaybe presentforspeciesthathuntalongstreams.Indeed,with Mist nets placed in and around a pond that is 19capturesof M daubentonii thisseemstobetrue.For frequently visited by thirsty bats. otherspecies,thecaptureabovestreamsorpondscan berelatedtoeitherdrinking(ponds)orcommuting(streams).Inmostcases,netswereplacedoverstreamsin placeswherethevegetationcoveralongthebanksofthestreamformedacorridor.Commutingbatstendto usethesecorridorsforwindshelter.Itisnotlikelythat,becauseofthespecificsamplelocations,aspecies presentintheareahasnotbeenrecordedduringtheworkshop.However,theplacementofthenetssurely hasinfluencedspeciescomposition. In12ofthe16nettingattempts,thealtitudewasrecordedbyGPS.Duringtheworkshop,netshavebeen placedinlocationsbetween622and876meterabovesealevel.Thepresenceofnorthernspecieslike Vespertilio murinus and Eptesicus nilsonii ismostlikelyduetothehighaltitudeofthesamplearea. Unfortunately,thereisnotmuchtosayabouttheinfluenceofthealtitudeofthespecificnettinglocationon thespeciesofbatthatflewintothenets.Forexample,both Vespertilio murinus and Eptesicus nilsonii were presentbothinnetsplacedat622aswellas876meter,theextremesinaltitude.Thehabitatsurrounding thenettinglocationsmayhavehadamoreprofoundinfluence.Forotherspecies,thereisnorelationwith presenceandcatchaltitudeaswell.Arepetitiveandstandardizednettingprojectwillpotentiallyindicate altitudepreferencesbetweenthedifferentspeciespresent. Thecaptureofagreaternoctule( Nyctalus lasiopterus )isthethirdcaptureofthisspeciesin Slovakia.Thespecimencaughtwasanadultfemale bat.Therewereneitherindicationsforrecentlactation norforlactationearlierintheseason.Itwascaught

aboveanopenspotatariverinthePol’anareserve. Since N. lasiopterus huntsforlargepreyinopen areas,itismostlikelythatitwascaughtduringa drinkingattempt,wheretheopenareaenabledthe battoapproachthewatersurface.

Mammal survey Pol'ana (Slovakia) 2005 15 3.2 ROOSTSINCHURCHLOFTSANDOTHERBUILDINGS by:RudyvanderKuil Againthisyearoneofthefavoriteactivitiesduringthedaywasvisitingthedifferentchurchbuildingsinthe researcharea.Exceptforchurchbuildingsalsounoccupiedhouses,barns,ruinsanddetachedwoodenbell towerswerecheckedforthepresenceofbats.EventheatticofthetownhouseofLubietovawasnotsafefor theresearchers. 3.2.1 Church buildings

Intheresearchareaatotalof25churchbuildings wereinfactvisited(seeappendix1).Thecatholic churchesofCerin,DolnasMicinaandDubravicawere notvisitedbecause,accordingtothesexton,nobats werepresentthere,inspiteoftherequestofour Photo:JanBoshamer SlovakianhostMartinCeluch.Anumberofother churcheswerenotsuitableforbatsbecausetheywere tomodern,likethechurchesofKrivanandKorytarky. Themaingoalwasmostlythechurchloftandthe archedroofofthechurch.Heremostofthe observationsweredone.Iftherewasabelltowerthis wasalsoincludedintheresearch. One of the visited churches. In14ofthe25churchesthatwereexaminedbatswereactuallyseen.In5instancesonlyexcrementswere found,somefresh,someold,onwhichoccasionalsoadead M. myotis wasfoundinthechurchofPoniky. In5instancesnotracewhatsoeverwasfound.OntheatticofthechurchinDetvianskaHutanoanimals wereseenduringtheday(alotofdroppingsthough),butinflyinganimalswereseenduringthemorning.The Mouseearedbat( Myotis myotis )wasthespeciesmostlyseen.Itwasobservedin8cases.Apartfromthe 1280batsflyingoutofthechurchinOcova,inthreeotherchurchesatotalofabout300animalswas counted:onegroupof150,oneof75andoneof55.Intotalabout2500animalsofthisspecieswere detected. IntheothercasesLesserhorseshoebat( R. hipposideros ),Commonlongearedbat( P. auritus )andGrey longearedbat( P. austriacus )werefound.InthechurchofLubietovaatotalofnolessthan86werecounted with1Commonlongearedbat.InthechurchbuildingofHrochot10Lesserhorseshoebatswerecounted, togetherwith10Greylongearedbats.ThisspecieswasalsofoundinthechurchofZolna(1specimen).The LesserhorseshoebatwasalsofoundinthechurchesofDubravica(6specimens)andPonikyHuta(8 animals). 3.2.2. Bell towers

Intheareaofstudyalotofsolitary,mostlywooden towersarepresent.Thepurposeofthesewooden towershasnotbecomeveryclear.MartinCeluch mentionedthatintheeastofSlovakiaabout1500 Mouseearedbat( M. myotis )werefoundinsucha building,sothesignificanceoftheseremarkable Photo:RudyvanderKuil towersforbatswasobvious. Duringourresearch10belltowerswerevisited;in threeinstancesonesinglebatwasfound,twicea Mouseearedbat( M. myotis )andonceaLesser horseshoebat( R. hipposideros ).Inthreecasesonly excretionswerefoundandinfourinstancesnothing wasfound. 16 Dutch Mammal Society 3.2.3 Other buildings Intheactualresearchareafewunoccupiedhousesandbarnswerefound.IntheneighbourhoodofHroncek threeunoccupiedbuildingswerefoundwith3Daubenton’sbats( M. daubentonii),3Whiskeredbats( M. mystacinus ),3Natterer’sbats( M. nattererii )and1Lesserhorseshoebat( R. hipposideros )ontheatticks. DuringtheworkshopinSlovakiaalmostallbatsthatwerecapturedwereexaminedforparasites.Bats,mostly thespeciesthatformlargecoloniesinhollowtreesandcaves,appeartobevisitedbylargequantitiesof ectoparasites.Duringour2004workshopinsomexperiencehasbeengainedwithharvesting parasitesfrombats.Thegoalofharvestingectoparasitesistofindoutwhichspeciesarepresentonbats, whichbatsaccommodatethemostparasites,andtoseeifthereisadifferenceinparasitesfoundonbats livingintreesorlivingincaves.Alsoitisinterestingtofindoutifthesexofthebatsmakesanydifferencein thepresenceofparasites.ForPeterKa ňuchtheectoparasitesonLeisler’sbatswereimportant.Thisspecies formsanimportantpartofhisresearchonbatspecieslivinginwoodsinthevicinityofthePol’anadistrict. Inthecourseoftimeaprotocolhasbeenestablishedinwhichectoparasitesarecollected.Firstthespecies, thesex,theageandthesexualstatusofthebataredetermined.Afterrecordingthesefindingsthepresence ofparasitesischecked.ParasitesaretakenoffwithapointedpairoftweezersandputinanEppendorffilled withalcohol.Especiallytheborderoftheears,thefurandthewingmembranearechecked. Brownbear( Ursus arctos ))) Thoughnotsighted,thepresenceofthebrownbearwasindisputablebythemarksitleftontreesandbyits faeces.Thescratchingonthebarkofatreebythebear’snailsleavesdistinctverticallines,accompaniedby freshresinontheconiferoustrees.Bearfaecesareoftenclearlyvisible,layingonpathways.Ononelocation beardroppingswereseen,onthreelocationsmarksonthetrees,andononeplacesituatednorthofLátky droppings,barkmarksandtracksofadultandyoungbrownbearoccurredalltogether.Thelocationswere spreadthroughouttheresearcharea.Formoredetailedinformationonbeartracksseesection4.4.The CarpathianbearpopulationisEurope’smostnumerouswith7500individuals(MitchellJones et al. ,1999). Stoat( Mustela erminea ))) Twostoatsarespottedintheresearcharea.Oneofthemwassuccessfullyhuntingdownayoungsouslik.A thirdrecordingconcernstracksof Mustela spec.Thestoatisprobablypresentinthewholecountry,asisthe weasel( M. nivalis )andthewesternpolecat( M. putorius ,seebelow).Thesteppepolecat( M. eversmanii )is absentinPol’anaandshowsamoresouthernandeasterndistributioninSlovakia(MitchellJones et al. , 1999). Westernpolecat( Mustela putorius ))) Asawesternpolecatwascrossingtheroadrightinfrontofoneofourcars,itscharacteristicswereclearly lightedupduringthelateevening.ThiswasontheroadalongsidethereservoirnorthofHri ňová.Threedays later,oncemoreawesternpolecatwassightedundersimilarconditionsbutthistimeclosetothecamp locationinLátky.Thetwolocationsareabout7kmapart.Thepopulationdensityofthisspeciesisgenerally low,1/1000hato5or10/1000haonthebestlocations(MitchellJones et al. ,1999).Onewestern polecatper1000haequals1per10km 2,soitmightconcernthesameindividual. Beechmarten( Martes foina ))) Thebeechmartenisalsopresent,nexttoitsrelativethepinemarten.Oneindividualwasnoticedcrossinga bridgeofasmallroadatnight,asitfollowedasmallstonystreamborderedwithtreesonbothsides.Itwas callingtoanotherindividualthatstayedbehindalittle.Onanotherlocation,twojuvenileswhereseenona gravelroadinthewoods.Intotal,thesightingsconcernfourlocationsandsevenbeechmartens.Ontopof that, Martes sp.latrinesintheatticsofchurches,barnsandthelikewerefound.Andsomesightingsrevealed notenoughdetailstopositivelydeterminethespeciesofmarten.Concluding,martensarequiteprevalent aroundPol’ana. Pinemarten( Martes martes ))) Onseveralspotsinthearea,droppingsofprobablypinemartenwerefound.Thesmellcanmakeit distinguishablefromthebeechmarten’sfaeces,thoughthisisnotaconclusiveargument.Ononeoccasion, thepinemartenitselfwasseen.ThespeciesiscommoninthispartofEurope. Badger( Meles meles ))) Onlyonebadgerwasrecordedduringtheresearchperiodbyfootprintsinthemud(nearthereservoirnorth ofHri ňová).IntheCzechRepublicandinSlovakiathepopulationdensityof0.10.6adultsperkm 2 constitutesEurope’slowest(MitchellJones et al. ,1999). Mammal survey Pol'ana (Slovakia) 2005 25 Lynx( Lynx lynx) OnonelocationinthesouthwesternpartofthePol’anareserve,tracksofthelynxwerediscovered.The tracksofanadultandacubwerevisibleinthemudofasmallpondinthewoods.Crossingtheroad windingthroughtheforestfromHri ňováuptoDetvianskaHuta,alynxmotherwithtwocubswasseen.This wasonarainyday,andprobablythenoiseoftheobservers’carwasmuffledbecauseofthat.The spectacularexperienceisdescribedbyoneoftheobserversinaseparatetextbox. OurresearchareaofPol’anaandsurroundingspossiblyincludesmorethanonelynxhomerange,meaning thatthetracksandthesightingmightconcerndifferentindividuals.Densepopulationscanbefoundwere roedeerissufficientlyavailableasprey,butwolfisacompetingspecies.TheCarpathianlynxpopulationhas constitutedastrongholdforthespecies,havingsuppliedindividualsforreintroductionsinmanyotherpartsof Europe(MitchellJones et al. ,1999). Wildboar( Sus scrofa ))) Severaltracksandonedroppingofwildboarsarefoundwithintheresearcharea.Ononelocationabalmy trackwasfound,wherewildboarshadtakenamudbath. Reddeer( Cervus elaphus ))) InthenorthernpartofthePol’anareserve,westofSihla,afemalereddeerwasseenduringtheday.Ontwo otherlocationsrespectivelyanadultwithayoungandfiveadultsweresighted.Trackswerefoundona numberofoccasions. Roedeer( Capreolus capreolus ))) Notonlyduringthenight,butalsoduringdaytimeroedeercouldbeseenwhileforagingonnaturalfields andagriculturalacres.Alsofootprintswerefound(seealsosection4.4).Thespeciesappearstobe abundant.

SIGHTINGOFALYNSIGHTINGOFALYNXWITHCUBS…ASPECTACULAREXPERIENXWITHCUBS…ASPECTACULAREXPERIENCECE by:AnkevanderWal OnFridaymorningalllifetrapswereplannedtobecollected,butduetothecontinuousrainitwasdecidedtocollect themousetrapsalreadyonThursdayafternoon.Ourgroup(Albin,PeterandAnke)hadfirstclearedthetrapson locationEandonthewaybackwesawafoxeatingjustbesidetheroad.Thisobservationinitiatedourdiscussion againthatwehadmorechancetomakemammalobservationswithbadweather. ThenthetrapsatFwerepickedup,andwewerereadyjustintimefordinner.Wehadpassedtheprovincialvillage ofHrinovaandturnedintotheroadthroughthewoodyslopes,andthere–justaswecameoutofabend–wesaw ananimaldisappearingintothevegetationoftheslope.Ourfirstthoughtwasthatiswasadeer,butthatwassoon contradictedbytwolittlelynxkittensthathoppedafterthemother.Whenseeingourcarapproachingtheyranback inpanictowheretheycamefrom,resultingintheseparationfromthemother. Westoppedabitfurtherontheroad,windowsopen,andyoucouldhearthesocialsoundsbetweenthelynxes.We droveonforabit,andthematureanimalcamebackagaintotheroadandstoodthere,lookingatourcar.Shewas slenderandstoodhighonherfeet,herfurshowingdarkdots.However,ourpresencefrightenedhertoomuchand shedivedintothevegetationagain–stillonthewrongsideoftheroad.Becauseitwasadangeroussituationfor lynxes,beingalongsideabusyroad,wedecidedtodriveonforabit.Onlythenthefemalehadgatheredenough couragetorunacrosstheroad–backtohertwoyoungones. Allinallthiswasafantasticexperienceandaprivilegetohaveseentheseanimals.Anditwasremarkablethatalynx withkittenswoulddaretobesoclosetobuildingsandpeople–wewereabout2kmawayfromthevillage DetvanskaHuta.

Europeansouslik (Spermophilus citellus) Atdifferentlocations,forinstanceonaslopenearbyourcampsiteinLátky,therewereEuropeansouslik colonies.Exceptforthefrequentlyusedcaveentrances,toberecognizedbythesmallpilesofsoilbefore them,alsomanytrappipeswerefound.ThesepassagesgoingdownperpendicularlyareusedbyEuropean souslikstodiveundergroundincaseofdanger.Theyarealloverthepathsanddifferfromthenormalcave entrancesbytheabsenceofmovedsoil.Thediameterofthecaveentrancesaswellasthatoftheescape pipesisusually5–6cm.Thecavesareconnectedthroughanextensivenetworkofalso5–6cmwidepaths, thatareclearlylightlycolourednearthecavesbythegrainsofsandthatfelloffthepawsandfurs.Onthe smallpilesofsoilbeforethecavesexcrementscanbefound.Theyaresolidinconsistencyandlooklikebig ratdroppings.Withtheadultanimalstheseare5–7mmthickand10–16mmlong(so,relativelybig). Sometimestheyarestucktogetherinoblongclusters.Every(mature)animalhasitsowncaveentranceand producesnumerousfreshdroppings.Whenfreshtheyaredarkgreen,buttheydiscolorveryquicklytoblack orblackishgrey. Forestdormouse (Dryomys nitedula) andandCommonCommonCommondormousedormouse (Muscardinus avellanarius) IntheforestontheslopeatBratkovicaonJuly30th2005,anumberofnestingboxeswerecheckedfor .Unfortunately(probablybecauseoftheveryhightemperatureduringtheday)noanimalswerefoud inthesenestingboxes,buttheinspectionprovidedtheopportunitytolookatthenestformandthematerials thatwereused.AccordingtolocalbiologistsForesForestdormiceForestdormicemostlymakeasomewhatblocklikenetdormice stinthese nestingboxeswithabowlshapedhollowing(asinatitnest).Thematerialusedwasmostlymoss (Sphagnum ),leavesandhair.ThenestsofHazeldormiceHazeldormiceHazeldormicearemostlybulbshapedandhaveanopeningon theside.Theyaremostlyconstructedusingleaves,grassandlichens. Roedeer(Capreoluscapreolus) Anice,butveryraretrailtypeoftheRoedeeristhesocalledroering.Twoofthosewerefoundnearto eachotheronalowslopeontheedgeofafoliageforestnotfarfromthecampsite(NovySvet,August,1 st ). Suchatrackisformedduringtheruttingseason.SometimesithappensthataRoedeergoat,whilstchased byabuck,isgoingincircles.Thebuckfollowsherinthesamecirclesandthatwayaflattenedcircularor ovalpathdevelopsinthevegetation.Thedimensionofthebiggestofthetwopaths(hereitwasoval)was 7.3meterslongand4.7meterswide.Thewidthofthewalkingtrackwas40–45cm. Brownbear( Ursus arctos ))) ThemoststrikingtraceoftheBrownbearwerethesocalledscratchingtrees.Whileexaminingthebarkof thetreemoreclosely,notonlyscratchingfromnailswasseen,butalsoheavyindentationscausedbythe canineteeth.Agroupof6–7(relativelysmall)scratchedtreeswasdiscoveredonJuly30 th 2005intheforest ontheslopenearBratkovica,amixedforestwithaborderoffirs.Thebearsusethesetreesnotonlyfor sharpeningtheirnails,butalsotorubtheiragainstit.Whetherthebitemarksonlyhaveafunctionofputting scentonit(=marking)orwhetherthebearistakingouthisaggressiononit,isnotquiteclear.(Almost two months later, on September 20 th , 2005, Peter Ka ňuch emailed that on this particular spot a mushroom picker was attacked by a bear that was not yet full-grown. Luckily he got away with only a few scratches). OnAugust4th,averylargepinewithscratchandbitemarkswasseeninthemixedwoodatPol’ana.There werealsosome“satellitetrees”,thatwerealsoscratched,butlessintensively.Onaforestpathinthe neighbourhoodablackandcrumblyexcrementwasfoundthatwasspoiledbyrain,whichcontainedmostly restsofbluebilberry.Onthelargesttreethebitemarkswereonapproximately2metersheightandthenail scratchesevenupto2.5meters!Themarkingfunctionwasveryobvioushere.Therewasalotofhairsticking intheresinrunningoutataheightofapproximately1.70m.Thebearmusthavehadascratchthere, standingonitshindlegswithitsshoulderagainstthetree.Wewouldhavelikedtoseethisanimalin “person”(onrespectfuldistanceofcourse)!Thehairsofabearofupto17cmlongwererelativelythin (summerfur),butverytough.Unfortunatelynofootprintsofthebearwereseen.

Mammal survey Pol'ana (Slovakia) 2005 27 Otter(Lutralutra) Tracksandspraintsofotterswerefoundatdifferentlocationsonthebanksofbrooksandrivers.Clearand freshtrackswerepresentattheriverKaminstyPotokenČiernyPotokintheNationalParkPol'ana,onJuly 31 st .AtthelittlereservoirwherelaterthatdaytheNoctulewastobecaptured,thefootprintsthatwere carefullywipedoutonAugust2 nd appearedtobereplacedbynewones.Soitappearedtobea hot spot in thelivingenvironmentoftheotter. Lookedfor,butnotfound:tracksand/orexcremLookedfor,butnotfound:tracksand/orexcrementsentsoflynxoflynx (Lynx lynx) OnbothsidesoftheroadbetweenDetvianskaHutaandLátky,onwhichsomeparticipantsoftheworkshop sawafemalelynxcrossoverwithhertwocubsonAugust4 th (seetextboxonpage26),asearchfortracks wascarriedoutonAugust6 th .Unfortunatelynotrackswerefound.Inthevalleyandtheforestontheslope somepotentiallygoodobservationpostsandrestingplaceswerefound,likecavitiesinandundertheroot systemoffallentrees.However,Pinemartenexcrementswerepresentonthosespots.Inspiteoftheraintwo daysagotherewerefewspotswherethesubstratewassoftenoughtoregisterfootprintswell.Atsome muddyplaceswherethatwasthecaseseveralfootprintscouldbefound,butnoneofthelynx.In2004, alsoinSlovakia,butinamorenorthernarea,inSlovenskiRaj,workshopmembersdidmanagetofindtracks ofalynxinaspecificsearch.Thetrackofthefrontfeetwas7.6cmlongandwideinthatcase. InthepineforestsandpeatmootsofPol’anaspecieslikeHazelGrouse,GrouseCapercallie,Fieldfare,Ring OuzelandSpottedNutcrackerwereobserved.GroupsofCommonCrossbillsflewoverregularly.Inthe twilightthealarmingcryofaEurasianPygmyOwlwasheardtwiceintheneighbourhoodofthehotel. IntheairHoneyBuzzardswerespottedregularlyandononeoccasionalsoaGoldenEagleandaLesser SpottedEaglewereseen.AlongsidethebrookssomeBlackStorkswereregularlypresenttobeadmired.In theopenfieldtheWhiteStorkswereobviouslyinthemajority.InsomeplacessmallgroupsofEuropianBee eaterswerepresent. InthesmallscaleagriculturalareaCommonQuails,RedbackedShrikesandYellowHammerswerepresent everywhere.SouthofPol’anaalsosomeLesserGreyShrikeswereobserved,sittingonwires.
