Fehmarn Cycling - Sunny outlook for cyclists Plenty of sunshine, a mild sea climate and an overall flat and even ground make Fehmarn a first class address for cyclists. Around 300 kilometers of signposted cycle trails span across the island and the coast. Natural beaches, inland lakes and cliffs alternate along the 78 kilometers of coastline. In the binnenland of the island, the road leads you through villages or meadows and fields, which light up bright yellow throughout the Rape-Blossom season in spring. Those who like to travel by course, are welcome to buy a special tour map with five designated routes at the tourist information office. You can choose e.g. the “church tour”, the “harbor tour” or the “Sundbrückentour”. Depending on the direction of the wind and your condition you can tackle the tours right or left and start at any point. The so-called "Ostküstenpromenade" between Staberdorf and Klausdorf is one of the most scenic cycling routes on Fehmarn: the cycle path runs with an unobstructed view of the Baltic Sea directly above the steep coast. The well signposted routes of the “Baltic Sea Cycle Route” and the “Mönchsweg” are also popular. For a break, the five marinas are recommended, as well as a visit to one of the five “Farm Cafés”, that are partially connected to a farm shop. Splendid views are provided by so-called "field sofas", curved wooden benches in many places on the island. On the steep coast between Katharinenhof and Staberdorf in the east of Fehmarn, the field sofa can even be rotated 360 degrees. A popular destination among cyclists is Fehmarn's highest lighthouse “Flügge”. 162 steps lead to an all-round view at 37 meters. Nearby you’ll find the “NABU Wasservogelreservat Wallnau”, one of the most ecologically valuable regions in Northern Germany. From the observation huts you can sometimes watch very rare water and migratory bird species. For e-bikes there is a wide network of "charging stations" available. The island-wide roadside assistance provided by two local bicycle rental shops offer first aid and support for any breakdown. Fehmarn and the Vogelfluglinie - bird migration, nature reserves and international transport connection The “Vogelfluglinie” is a transport corridor that was developed in the 1960s between the Copenhagen and Hamburg metropolitan areas, in which Fehmarn is integrated. It is also an important bird migration route of cranes and other Arctic waterfowl running parallel between and . Since its commissioning on April 30, 1963, the Fehmarnsund Bridge connects the south of the island with the mainland of Schleswig-Holstein. Popularly known as the "hanger", it replaces the ferry service between Großenbroderfähre and Fehmarnsund and has been a heritage listed building since 1999. In addition, an 18-kilometer long single-track railway line from Großenbrode to Puttgarden, was established as well as the federal highway 207 from to Puttgarden. The ferry station in Puttgarden is the starting point of the 19- kilometer ferry route to Rödby in Denmark. The Danish ferry "Kong Frederik IX" inaugurated the new route on May 14, 1963. In May 1977, the 50 millionth passenger passed the Belt, the 100 millionth in 1988. Today, the ferries "Schleswig-Holstein", "Deutschland", "Prinsesse Benedikte" and "Prins Richard" depart every 30 minutes, the journey time is 45 minutes. At the end of the 1950s the expansion of the Vogelfluglinie was the largest construction site in Schleswig-Holstein and led to a rapid tourism development on Fehmarn. The transport route right now is undergoing a further expansion as part of the "Fixed Crossing" project. In the next few years, a tunnel will be built into the Fehmarnbelt that connects the north of Fehmarn with the Danish island of . In the course of this an expansion of the traffic crossings on Fehmarn and in will take place. Due to their rich food supply and favorable location, the four nature reserves “Grüner Brink”, “Wallnau”, “Krummsteert” and “Northern Lakeland” on Fehmarn are a sought-after resting places for migratory birds. Tens of thousands of them travel to this place every year on their journey between the breeding grounds and their winter quarters, using it - depending on the season and direction of flight - as a bridge to the north or south. The best place for bird watching is at the “NABU water bird reserve Wallnau”, one of the most ecologically valuable regions of Northern Germany. Unnoticed by the birds you may enjoy a spectacular view from specially built observation huts on numerous, sometimes very rare bird species. An even further view over the almost 300-acre site is possible from a ten-meter-high observation tower. Particularly worthwhile is a visit between mid-April and mid-May - when the migratory birds show their magnificent dresses during courtship. Detailed information about bird species and flight routes is provided by at the exhibition center. Especially for children, the tactile path exhibit is an experience. Barefoot and blindfolded, they can feel their way over spruce cones and woods, touch "exciting stuff" in hidden places, and sniff plants like lavender and rosemary. Employees of the water bird reserve guide people through the grounds and the bistro provides delicious organic dishes. Also accessible to visitors is the 134-hectare “Grüner Brink” on the north coast of Fehmarn. The 2.5 kilometers long and up to 180 meters wide strip of land between the dike and the 10

Baltic Sea was actually formed by the dike construction in 1872 and has been under conservation since 1938. Altering flow conditions led to this “Nehrungshaken”, which later formed small inland lakes which subsequently dried out. Nowadays salty Baltic Sea water only flow into these small inland lakes during strong flooding.

Over the course of a year, up to 170 species of birds are counted around “Grüner Brink”. Southwest of “Grüner Brink” you will find the largest nature reserve in Fehmarn, in fact at 751 hectares it is the largest in East Holstein. The “Northern Lakeland” has only been under protection since 29 August 2014, making it the youngest of the four protected areas of the island. It mainly comprises coastal sections and adjoining lowland areas with lakes, reeds, salt marshes and extensively used grassland areas. Many endangered plant and animal species such as the cross toad, the bittern, the little tern, the common tern, coastal sea kale, beach pout and beach thistle are native to this area. Several paths lead through the nature reserve, for example, to the east of Markelsdorfer Huk (northwestern Fehmarn) to reach the neighboring campsites, little restaurants and the beach areas not included in the nature reserve. Near the Markelsdorfer Huk there is another observation platform.

The “Krummsteert” (low German for "crooked tail") is located on the south-western tip of the island of Fehmarn and must not be entered. It is part of the nature reserve "Krummsteert - Sulsdorfer Wiek", which covers about 395 hectares and exists since 1980. It is divided into four different ecosystems: the Krummsteert, the Sulsdorfer Wiek, a former sea bay located behind the dike, the Ramskamp with salt marshes and brackish ponds as well as water areas of the Baltic Sea. From the visitor`s platform of the 37-meter lighthouse Flügge, the view opens onto the entire Nehrungshaken. The footpath from Orth to the lighthouse leads past the Sulsdorfer Wiek, the Ramskamp reed area and the Flügger ponds. Information boards provide information about the breeding and migrating birds.

Especially protected is the tiny Kolhof island situated in Burger Lake (Burgtiefe), which also serves as a breeding ground for numerous birds in the southern part of Fehmarn.

Fehmarn Family-Friendly Activities - Holiday on the Baltic Sea island Fehmarn is a popular family destination. The sunny, mild and stimulating climate, good accessibility, family-friendly accommodation and numerous leisure activities (even during rainy periods) make it easy for adults and children to spend an eventful and/or relaxed holiday. Easy to reach, close to Denmark: As part of the "Vogelfluglinie", the direct transport link between Greater Copenhagen and Hamburg, Fehmarn has been connected since 1963 by the Fehmarnsund Bridge in the south to the Schleswig-Holstein mainland, and so the island is easily to be reached by car. Likewise Fehmarn is connected by two stations of the German Railway Network. Puttgarden station is a destination for ICE, EC and regional trains, and Burg station is served by IC and regional trains. The 19-kilometer ferry route from Puttgarden in the north of Fehmarn to Rödby in Denmark makes it easy to take a trip to the Lolland / region. On the island of Falster, for example, the Toy Museum Nyköbing or the crocodile zoo Eskilstrup, where the world's only collection of all 23 existing crocodile species is presented, are worthwhile to be visited. The Lalandia Aquadome in Rödby on Lolland houses the Tornado, Northern Europe's largest covered waterslide, constructed in a 24- meter high tower. Mild stimulating climate, beach life and natural conditions: With an average of 2,200 hours of sunshine per year Fehmarn is considered one of the sunniest regions in Germany. Natural beaches, inland lakes and cliffs alternate on the 78 kilometers of coastline. The beaches at Burgtiefe and Wulfener Hals are the southernmost and whitest sandy beaches of the island. In this part, the coast is particularly flat, and are the best conditions for building sand castles or looking for shells. The same applies to “Grüner Brink” in the north of Fehmarn. Both beaches are patrolled by lifeguards. At Bojendorf there is an all-round service available to rent beach-chairs, a kiosk, and sports & leisure facilities. Inland, there are meadows and fields that light up in intense bright-yellow during the rape-blossom season in spring, offering great walks and cycling tours. If you wish to experience (kite) surfing, diving, horseback riding, golfing or fishing, you will also find ideal places on this island. Extensive entertainment program / numerous events: In the peak season from Monday to Friday the team of the Fehmarn Baltic Sea in cooperation with the Tourism Service provide daily programs for children and families. You and your kids can experience activities including archery, courses in Flash Cups, Dice Stacking, YoYo or juggling, crafting and free games or sports on the beach and much more. The Puppenbühne Hein (puppet show) regularly hosts the children's plays "Ostseekasper" and "Petterson & Findus" every Wednesday. The dazzling god of the sea in person pays tribute to the South Beach in Burgtiefe. In line with the famous equatorial baptism of sailors, all children can be “baptized” by Neptune and, of course, have their individual picture taken with him. During the “Pirate adventure” children set sail with Captain Gunnar and his Pirate Ship "Tümmler" - followed by a treasure hunt.

Covering 950 square meters, the glass-roofed butterfly park with a free-flying hall constantly houses between 600 and 1,000 moths that move freely at 25 to 30 degrees Celsius and 80 percent humidity. Over the year you may discover up to 100 different species, mainly from Malaysia and Costa Rica. Designed as a "hands-on museum", the Galileo Wissenswelt brings visitors and nature's phenomena close on 3,200 square meters. It’s divided into the two themes "Earth & Life" and "Energy & Technology". The “Meereszentrum” (ocean park) is one of the largest aquarium facilities in Europe. Fehmarn has about 500 residential units on farms, including organic farms. The island's 18 campsites are all located near the coast. Hotels for the more discerning families are also available.

Water Sports Paradise Fehmarn – ideal wind conditions, good infrastructure, distinctive event scene and interesting personalities

Fehmarn is known among (kite) surfers as "Hawaii of the North", which is known far beyond the borders of northern Germany for its optimal wind conditions. Around Fehmarn, windsurfers and kiters have a total of 17 spots available to them. Whether as a beginner in the shallows, advanced or expert in the surf, there is a perfect spot for every level and every wind direction. Often, a (kite) surf school is found nearby. The choice of courses and equipment in surf schools and water sports shops is great. Several events around surfing and kiting attract numerous visitors each year. The Surf Festival in Fehmarn starts in May and kicks off the main water sports season. A special highlight of this event is one of the largest outdoor trade fairs for surf and SUP athletes, where many new products can be tested for free. www.surffestival.de You can experience a touch of nostalgia and surfing flair of the 60s at the Midsummer Bulli (VW Bus) Festival, where the “Bulli- scene” of Germany meets in June on the South Beach. Another eye-catcher is the high density of T1 and T2 vehicles in the beach camp. Added to this is a varied supporting program with BULLI-Bar, the shopping mile Sunset BULLIvard and live acts on stage. Please refer to: www.midsummerfestival.de For three years (2016-2018) Fehmarn had hosted the Kite Surf World Cup. For the world's best kite surfing professionals from over 20 countries, this competition on the South Beach is for the freestyle and slalom titles, with high prize money and important points for the World Cup on offer. The German Speed Surfing Championship is traditionally held at the end of August / beginning of September in the Bay of Orth. Speed surfing is the Formula 1 of surfing. Both the equipment and the driving skills are fine tuned to reach a top speed of over 80 km / h. The following rules apply to speed surfing: First, a course of 250 m or 500 m in length is marked by buoys. During the race, which lasts 90 minutes, the participants drive one after another through the course as often as they wish or can do within the time. As the speeds are very high, the drivers have to keep enough distance to each other. The GPS devices record the route and the times of the drivers. In the evaluation, the average speeds per trip are determined by the course. The two fastest runs of each driver are scored as a result, the driver with the highest speeds is considered the winner. As several races will be held in the course of the week, the overall winner will be determined according to a points system and crowned German Champion. Guest drivers are welcome to participate and find out their top speed. www.speedwindsurfen.de "Surftwins" and “Kiteboard-forge” for the world market - interesting kite and surf personalities on Fehmarn

Born in 1939, the illustrious surfers Jürgen and Manfred Charchulla, who are based on Fehmarn, are considered pioneers of windsurfing. Since the age of fifteen they have been sailing for 15 years. In 1973 they opened one of the first surf shops of the world in Bremen. In 1974, Manfred Charchulla initiated the first windsurfing lessons in Körbecke on the Möhne- dam and on the Isle of . As the first surfers, both brothers crossed the English Channel on May 25, 1975 on a tandem. About a year later, they mastered the Skagerrak on a tandem in 14 hours - from Hanstholm in Denmark to the Norwegian Mandal (without a dinghy). In 1975, the Charchullas finally settled down on Fehmarn and founded a surfing school at the Burger Binnensee in the immediate vicinity of the South Beach. For four years, an old ambulance served as a mobile home. Even today, they still run their kite and surfing school "Surftwins Charchulla" with its attached Caribbean bar. Now and then they also play music themselves - as "Steeltwins" with Steel Pans or as "Los Sombreros" with wooden instruments. Fehmarn gives home to a “kiteboard forge” who is one of the big players in the scene. Executive director Bernie Hiss carved his first surfboard as a 14-year-old boy in the basement of his parent’s house. Since then, the fascination of wind and water has determined his life. As a former top surfer he was German runner-up in 1998. According to Hiss, winning the championship title in the German Windsurfing Cup in 1999 happened not only thanks to his driving skills, but above all to his quest for perfection in the production and fine-tuning of his equipment. His company Hiss Tec has now developed the brand CARVED from a garage business to a global technology leading company in carbon kiteboards. On CARVED boards, at least one German championship title was won every year between 2002 and 2008 - until it was decided not to participate in any competitions. No other board brand has brought as many titles in Germany as CARVED. Hiss Tec also produces kites under the brand name CORE, which are equally suitable for beginners and professionals. CORE is now the market leader for kites in Germany. Fehmarn - a paradise for sailors Thanks to its geographical location, wind conditions and good infrastructure, Fehmarn is an ideal area for sailors and boat owners. There are a total of five marinas on Fehmarn. The Burgtiefe Marina in the south of the island is characterized by two peculiarities: especially wide space between the docks and a unique round shape. All harbors provide modern serviced buildings with sanitary facilities, ship cranes, bunker stations for diesel and gasoline or disposal. Often you will find surfing and sailing schools, restaurants, supermarkets or bbq and playgrounds nearby. Fehmarn is equipped with good boat infrastructure. These include boat halls, engine service stations, sailmakers, etc. The Danish South Sea, the Schleswig- Holstein Bay, the Bay of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania or other Baltic Sea countries are easy to be explored from Fehmarn by sailing boat. Sailors like to use Fehmarn as a stopover and appreciate the safe, quiet approach without complicated tacking. Diving on Fehmarn In general, you can dive around Fehmarn all year round. Dive conditions are especially worthwhile during the period from May to September, when the underwater world is most active. There are about 10 diving spots on Fehmarn, most on the west and east coasts. Legal restrictions exist only in the area of nature reserves, in front of the naval base in Marienleuchte and in the port facilities. As a rule, the diving spots are easily to be reached by car. For both beginners and advanced the Baltic Sea off Fehmarn offers ideal diving conditions. The depths that can be be reached from the shore are between five and ten meters. Even in summer, the visibility is up to 15 meters, but can vary greatly depending on the weather and 15 algae growth. The bottom of the Baltic Sea is covered with boulders overgrown with sea grasses and weed, where there is plenty of underwater flora and fauna. Particularly common are pipefish near the seaweed, crabs, flatfish, rockfish, Sticklebacks, Eel nuts, Butterfish, Swimming Gobies, Stain Gobies, Sand Eels, Baltic Shrimps, starfish and various types of mussels. You might even be lucky to spot a Scorpionfish, an eel or a swarm of young herring. Around Fehmarn there are also about ten submersible wrecks. Photographers can usually do without additional lighting when diving. Three dive centers offer guided dives, diving courses and even more in their program – They are situated in Wallnau in the west of Fehmarn, on the Wulfener Hals in the south of the island and at Katharinenhof at the eastern coast.

Fehmarn Food & Drink – “Kröpel”, “Fehmarnsche Kaffeetafel” & “Wiener Ziegel” No holidaymaker should miss the island specialty known as “Kröpel” – deep-fried small, round, sweet yeast balls. Originally, they were only prepared during the wheat harvesting season in summer as food supply for all harvesting farmers and helpers, and were generously distributed to the village community, relatives and acquaintances. Therefore, the recipes handed down often refer to large quantities - 10 to 20 “Kröpel” per person was the rule. Even today, many farms, and their guests, continue the Kröpel tradition. All year round, you can enjoy this sweet dish in Fehmarn’s numerous (farm) Cafes. Since 2003, a “Kröpel festival” takes place in Petersdorf every year, where everything is about “Kröpel”. The confederation of “country women” of the western part of Fehmarn bake the sweet island specialty directly on site, so that the scent of up to 1,500 “Kröpel” is in the air. Live music and small stalls with handicraft as for silver and stone jewellery, woodwork, Danish fashion or rapeseed pillows are presented during the festival. Children`s amusements with hopping animals, games of skill, wheel of fortune etc. makes it also attractive for the kids. Anyone interested can immerse themselves in the world of “Kröpel” when taking part in the "Kröpeltour", a guided bicycle tour including a “Kröpel” baking course. By bicycle, participants will discover local grain fields and follow the path from wheat grain to “Kröpel”, while afterwards baking their own ”Kröpel”, which in the end are tasted at a joint picnic near the carp pond. Do-it-yourself Recipe Fehmarn “Kröpel” (for about 70 pieces) Bring to the boil 1 l of milk, 100 g of butter, 1 pinch of salt, 1 pinch of cardamom (optional). Add 270 g of durum wheat semolina and make it into a big dumpling. Remove from heat and stir 6 to 7 eggs into the hot dough. After cooling, mix it with 500 g wheat flour and 100 g sugar, the juice of 1 lemon and 2 cubes of yeast (80 g), dissolved in luke-warm milk. Allow the dough to rise for 20 minutes, knead again, and then heat 2 kg of Biskin (frying fat or oil) to about 170 ° C. Add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the fat, which softens the baking smell. Cut off small balls with an ice cream scoop or teaspoon (about 8 per baking dish) and deep- fry for about 2 minutes on each side. Then drain briefly on a grid and roll in sugar. The “Fehmarnsche Kaffeetafel” (Fehmarn Coffee Table)

17

A “Fehmarnsche Kaffeetafel” is a Coffee Table Cake Celebration that follows its own customs. In order to serve everyone exactly the portion the individual guest prefers, the cake is not pre-cut. Everyone simply cuts down a suitable piece and passes the cake to his neighbor together with the cake knife. On the other hand, everyone participating is aware of the big variety of even more delicious cakes waiting – so you better start small, if you want to try more. A typical pastry that is offered at every celebration are the “Wiener Ziegel”. They consist of thin biscuit base, spread alternating with cherry jam and a light butter cream and then put together. These are then covered with a blanket of Lübeck marzipan and decorated with dark chocolate. The rich pastry is cut into about one centimeter-slices. Other typical specialties are sugar ringlets, small crispy pretzels sprinkled with coarse hail sugar. In many places you may also be served the so-called marshal tartlets: puff pastry with a plum jam filling and a baked macaroon bonnet, and butter cake made from juicy yeast dough with lots of butter, finely chopped almonds and a sugar crust, which is slightly caramelized when baking is also very popular.

Baltic Sea Island Fehmarn “sees yellow” - activities and products around the rape blossom In Germany there are many places that have a “the fifth season” which is synonymous with the carnival-season, but for Fehmarn it means that “all signs are yellow”, when in the middle / end of May the blossom of the rape fields turns the island into a bright yellow sea of color. This is the starting signal for a series of events and activities around the rapeseed. Traditionally this occours in Petersdorf, where the Rape-Blossom Festival takes place - A three-day festival program with lots of live music, dance and shows. All day visitors can feast and stroll along numerous stalls that offer a mix of homemade Fehmarn specialties and local craft. The highlight is the coronation of the “Rapsblütenkönigin” (Queen of the Rape- Blossom), which is celebrated on Saturday during a Queen’s Ball with fireworks at night, followed by a colorful parade through Petersdorf on Sunday. The new queen will then represent Fehmarn for a year nationwide on a variety of occasions. Likewise, many queens from all over Germany cannot resist taking part at the Rape-Blossom Festival on Fehmarn. As a yellow drink, "Rapsi", a blend of orange juice, rape honey and spirits, is served. Fehmarn is one of the strongholds of rapeseed cultivation and is known for its snow-white rapeseed honey. The "Nutella in white" is produced during the four-to six-week rape blossom in May / June. It is characterized by a 95% rape content and particularly mild taste. Only five percent are composed of Hawthorn and fruit blossoms. The high humidity on the island allows the rape flowers to sustain the nectar flow for a long time. Thus, bees can gather nectar all day and are particularly productive. Olaf Grimm is the only professional among the approximately 20 beekeepers who is active on the island of Fehmarn. He runs a small shop selling honey, mead, bee pollen, honeycomb soap and horse balm with propolis. As he says, it was his father who infected him with the “virus bee” very early. Originally, he was trained as a mechanic, but because of difficult working conditions in winter, he quickly decided to build up a second job as a beekeeper. Initially he had started with 30 bee colonies, but increased the population within a year to 100 hives. This was the leap into professional beekeeping. Today Olaf Grimm is working with 150 to 180 hives. He owns up to 10.8 million honey bees. The great Fehmarn man has been dedicated to his profession for 25 years and has built a loyal clientele throughout Germany. Two-thirds of the honey is already ordered before the harvest. The rest he sells primarily at the Burger weekly market. Rape-seed cushions, the Fehmarn version of a cold/heat pack, are in season year-round. Filled with rapeseed, which is much finer than the filling of other grain or cherry pit-pillows, this popular souvenir or gift is available in a variety of cotton fabrics, shapes and colors. As two, three or four chamber pillows, children's pillows or neck cushions they can be used for both warm and cold therapy. After a few minutes in the oven or in the microwave, they are soothing to cold hands and feet, neck tension, back, joint or kidney pain. For the cold version, the pillow sits into the freezer for at least one hour before it is used for sports injuries, bruises, migraines, toothaches or sunburn. Thanks to the high oil content of the 19 rapeseed, it stores the temperature for a very long time and releases it evenly. By arrangement, interested customers can order a personalized pillow, for example in the shape of Fehmarn Island or with personal embroidery. Also available online at www.rapskissen.com. Other popular specialties and souvenirs include rapeseed honey, rape honey bread, sausage with rapeseed oil and a second variety of "Rapsi", a liqueur with quince and 20 percent alcohol. During the rape blossom, it is worthwhile exploring the island by bicycle. Numerous bike paths lead through the yellow, fragrant fields. On the way there are plenty of opportunities to take amazing photos, for example the Fehmarnsund Bridge with a blooming rape field in the foreground. A glimpse of the yellow carpet of color can be seen from above from a sightseeing flight with a small plane, which regularly departs from the airfield Neujellingsdorf, the smallest airfield in Germany.

Concrete blocks or sophisticated unit? The architecture on the peninsula Burgtiefe Nothing else in Fehmarn divides opinion and causes debate more than the sight of the three skyscrapers on the south beach. What’s the point of these "concrete buildings" and the many adjacent "blocks"? Truly a lot when you think back to the time they were built. In the 1960’s, when tourism started to boom, the municipality Burg decided to transform the south beach peninsula Burgtiefe into a . The Dane Arne Jacobsen won the architectural competition. He is still considered one of the most important architects and designers of the 20th century. In 1966, the construction work started and lasted for seven years - until two years after Jacobsen's death in 1971. Originally intended as three-to-four-storey buildings, the three skyscrapers were ultimately extended to 17 floors due to the increasing space requirements. Today, a hotel is housed in the blocks named ‘Copenhagen’ and ‘Berlin’, while in the building ‘Stockholm’ you will find a mother-and-child recreation facility. Lots of open space, sociable togetherness & beautiful view With and overall sence of loseness, Jacobsen designed the rather bulky buildings with deligate lines putting the typical apartment structure aside. In fact, he chose a multi-level construction form to merge many open spaces and green areas together. This is where his main idea is to blend nature and architecture. In the center of his designs he combined worlds of experience and social life. He placed the (former) “Haus des Gastes”, which was incidentally inaugurated in 1968 as the first building, the spa center (today the fun pool) and the Seawater-Wavepool (completed in 1972) in the center of the entire ensemble. Glassy promenades make it possible for holiday-makers to meet in a nice atmosphere despite the wind or bad weather. All balconies of the apartments extend over the entire width of the apartment and are mostly facing the sun. Similarly, guests from all high-rise apartments have a great view towards the sun and the sea. This even works while sitting, because rotating slats on the balcony railings provide a sense of perspective or privacy – which can be opened or closed by crank. The open design, the orientation to the sunny side in combination with a good view are also central elements in Jacobsen's designs. Cultural property and monument protection These buildings on the peninsula Burgtiefe belong to the cultural heritage of Fehmarn. Already in 1991, the Wave Pool and the “Haus des Gastes”, together with the ruins of Glambek Castle, had been registered in the monument book. The amendment to the Law on Historic Monuments, which allows, since 2015, not only individual monuments but also ensembles to be placed under protection, went one step further. Since then, the priority lays on the preservation of the outer facade and the overall impression. Last but not least…. As clear and geometric Jacobsen's architecture seems, the more playful his design objects appear. The passionate botanist gained fame in the 1950s, especially with a series of chairs (or seats), all modeled on organic role models from nature. Product names such as "ant", "swan" or "egg" reflect his love of nature. His “chair 3107” is even considered the best selling chair ever. It was none other than Stanley Kubrick who selected Jacobsen's cutlery series AJ as props for his 2001 film "Space Odyssey".
