It places Roman decision-making and action within its proper context by emphasizing the role that Greek polities and Illyrian tribes played in both the outbreak and conclusion of the war. It argues that the primary motivation behind the Roman decision to declare war against the Ardiaei in 229 was to secure the very profitable trade routes linking Brundisium to the eastern shore of the Adriatic. It was in fact the failure of the major Greek powers to limit Ardiaean piracy that led directly to Roman intervention. In the earliest phase of trans-Adriatic engagement Rome was essentially uninterested in expansion or establishing a formal hegemony in the Greek East and maintained only very loose ties to the polities of the eastern Adriatic coast.

  • Report of the First Season 'Dimal in Illyria' 2010
Report of the first season ‘Dimal in Illyria’ 2010 N. Fenn, M. Heinzelmann, I. Klenner, B. Muka 1) Introduction The ancient site of Dimal (or Dimallon) in central Albania is the subject of a joint research project lead by the Institute of Archaeology of the University of Cologne, the Department of Archaeology in Tirana and the University of Applied Sciences Cologne. With the support of the RheinEnergie-Stiftung a first season of the project took place from September 15th until October 19th. During this period a geodetic network was established, large-scale geophysical prospections and terrestrial laser scans were carried out. At certain points of interest an intensive survey and stratigraphical sondages have been executed. The data collected by these methods are in the process of being integrated in a GIS. 2) Location The ancient site of Dimal is situated in the central-Albanian highland, about midway between the modern towns of Berat and Fier. (Fig. 1) West of the Albanian Alps and south of the plain Myzeqe, there is a north-south running hi ghland called Mallakastra, in which we know of several Illyrian hill-top settlements. Dimal is one of them, located on a big plateau, which provides around 9 ha of flat land to settle (Fig. 2). On the eastern part, there is an isolated smaller plateau (2 ha), which is 50 m higher than the rest of the surrounding area with the highest point at 445 m above sea level (Fig. 3). Two modern villages lie at the foot of the mountain, Bistrovica Fig. 1 - Map of Albania REPORT OF THE FIRST SEASON ‘DIMAL IN ILLYRIA’ 2010 Fig.

• Pisan Sigillata Augustan Ideology with a Few Images
PISAN SIGILLATA Augustan ideology with a few images Simonetta Menchelli – Paolo Sangriso Abstract In Italy, after Arezzo, Pisa was the main production centre of terra sigillata. Although the city undoubtedly espoused Augustan policies and its potters were deeply ingrained with the Imperial ideology, the decorated vessels were produced only in small numbers, (about 3 %) and the Augustan subjects, were even more scarce, despite being familiar to the Pisan artisans (for example the cycle of Heracles and Omphale, the She-Wolf and the Twins). In our opinion the Pisan workshops did not need to display the motifs of Augustan propaganda on their vases because of the city’s proven loyalty to Octavianus: and its elites had been Rome’s faithful allies for a long time, most probably thanks to the role played by Maecenas. Hence, Cn. Ateius and the other Pisan potters could give their full attention to the economic aspects of the sigillata productions, without being concerned about Augustan propaganda. Therefore, they specialized in plain vessels most probably because they could be easily piled together and were much more convenient for transport and trade than decorated chalices and large cups. Their market strategy, combining mass production and distribution, proved to be successful throughout the Roman Empire and beyond. Małgorzata Krawczyk PATERNAL ONOMASTICAL LEGACY VS. ILLEGITIMACY IN ROMAN EPITAPHS* Introduction n Roman onomastics, children born of a legitimate marriage usually re- Iceived the nomen of their fathers, while children of any other union re- ceived the family name of their mother (or rather of her own father or for- mer patronus). Thus Claudia Dioscoris, the daughter of Aelius Aelianus and Claudia Zosime (CIL VI 10634), who had her mother’s gentilicium and no fili- ation, was very likely illegitimate. Similarly, M. Attius Leander was probably an illegitimate son of Ti. Claudius Aug. lib. Leander and Attia Secunda CIL( VI 12776 = X 1088*, 53); he took his gentile name from his mother, although he also received the cognomen of his father (Leander), which seems to have been an established practice. Hilding Thylander, in his Étude sur l’épigraphie latine, provides several examples of illegitimate children who had the nomen of the mother and the cognomen of the father;1 yet, he attempted no explana- tion of this phenomenon. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… Page 1 of 181 Abstract This thesis aims to determine how and why Rome undertook a series of interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC. The thesis is based on a detailed examination and consideration of the ancient written sources and the subsequent historiography on the subject. The Roman interventions in Illyria during this period have traditionally been treated as a component of wider studies of Roman expansion, although Rome’s involvement in Illyria has recently been examined by Dzino in his 2010 work Illyricum in Roman Politics 229BC-AD68. This work examined the development and integration of Illyricum in Roman political discourse, in which the Roman interventions were a smaller component in the broader study. A study of the Roman interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC has never previously been treated on this scale, nor effectively with a synthesis of the various approaches and pieces of evidence that are now available.
