Illyrian Religion and Nation As Zero Institution
Studies in Visual Arts and Communication: an international journal Vol 3, No 1 (2016) on-line ISSN 2393 - 1221 Illyrian religion and nation as zero institution Josipa Lulić * Abstract The main theoretical and philosophical framework for this paper are Louis Althusser's writings on ideology, and ideological state apparatuses, as well as Rastko Močnik’s writings on ideology and on the nation as the zero institution. This theoretical framework is crucial for deconstructing some basic tenants in writing on the religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia, and the implicit theoretical constructs that govern the possibilities of thought on this particular subject. This paper demonstrates how the ideological construct of nation that ensures the reproduction of relations of production of modern societies is often implicitly or explicitly projected into the past, as trans-historical construct, thus soliciting anachronistic interpretations of the material remains of past societies. This paper uses the interpretation of religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia as a case study to stress the importance of the critique of ideology in the art history. The religious sculpture in Roman Dalmatia has been researched almost exclusively through the search for the presumed elements of Illyrian religion in visual representations; the formulation of the research hypothesis was firmly rooted into the idea of nation as zero institution, which served as the default framework for various interpretations. In this paper I try to offer some alternative interpretations, intending not to give definite answers, but to open new spaces for research. Keywords: Roman sculpture, province of Dalmatia, nation as zero institution, ideology, Rastko Močnik, Louis Althusser. -

A PRELIMINARY GEOCHEMICAL CHARACTERIZATION OF RELIEF CERAMICS FROM THE NADIN NECROPOLIS A Thesis Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts by Elizabeth Gaj Proctor August 2019 © 2019 Elizabeth Gaj Proctor ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT This paper analyzes a collection of Hellenistic mold-made relief vessels discovered during the 2018 season of the Nadin-Gradina Archaeological Project through non-destructive portable x-ray fluorescence (pXRF). Archaeometric analysis allows for a reconsideration of previous conclusions about the origins of these vessels and possible trade connections at the site of Nadin. The goal of this study is to determine potential source groups for these vessels through their geochemical composition. While the suitability of pXRF as an analytical tool for archaeological ceramics has been debated, the qualitative design of this research project and the physical characteristics of these vessels allow pXRF to be utilized successfully. Statistical analysis of pXRF results indicate the presence of multiple source groups represented in the samples. The attribution of most of these samples to a smaller number of potential source groups indicates a strong connection between the residents of Nadin and at least two production centers. This thesis is intended to suggest preliminary conclusions about potential sources and suggest areas of further study to better understand the trade connections that brought these vessels to Nadin and the role of Nadin in the Ravni Kotari landscape. ii BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Elizabeth Gaj Proctor received her BA from the University of Maine in 2017, majoring in Anthropology and minoring in Art History and Medieval and Renaissance Studies. -

Croatia, Plomin Coal Power Plant : Plomin C
Edited: January 2015 Croatia, Plomin Coal Power Plant : Plomin C 1.Basic Info. On September 2nd, 2014 the Croatia electricity company (HEP: Hrvatska elektroprivreda) announced Plomin C construction project (500 MW unit, supercritical coal-fired power plant) as a reconstruction of the Plomin A on the coat in Istria County, Croatia. Currently there are two units, Plomin A and B, at the Plomin power plant. The Plomin A was built in 1969, and its replacement plan for higher efficient Plomin C had come up in 2011. Croatia government is pushing this Plomin C project to increase capacity to support quickly expanding domestic power demand. Following European guideline and BAT (Best Available Techniques), this project aims to reduce environmental impact and increase efficiency as much as possible. The plant will be operated and maintained by HEP. For this project development, HEP had chosen the French energy company Alstom and the Japanese Marubeni Corporation through a bid. This project is not fully funded yet. The cost of Plomin C was estimated EUR 800-1000 million1. The construction is planned to start in 2013 and end by 2018, but the contract between HEP and Marubeni on constrcution of Plomin C is still not signed. 1 Reuters: Croatia, Marubeni was selected as a deveopper for power plant extension plan http://jp.reuters.com/article/2014/09/02/croatia-marubeni-idJPL3N0R35HV20140902 Edited: January 2015 2.Description Plomin A Plomin B Plomin C Construction 1969 2000 2013 start (not started yet) - 2018 2019 target for commercial launch Owner & -

Interventions by the Roman Republic in Illyria 230 – 167 BC
Interventions by the Roman Republic in Illyria 230 – 167 BC Submitted by Jack James Willoughby, to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Classics, September 2018. This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. (Signature) ……………………………………………………………………………… Page 1 of 181 Abstract This thesis aims to determine how and why Rome undertook a series of interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC. The thesis is based on a detailed examination and consideration of the ancient written sources and the subsequent historiography on the subject. The Roman interventions in Illyria during this period have traditionally been treated as a component of wider studies of Roman expansion, although Rome’s involvement in Illyria has recently been examined by Dzino in his 2010 work Illyricum in Roman Politics 229BC-AD68. This work examined the development and integration of Illyricum in Roman political discourse, in which the Roman interventions were a smaller component in the broader study. A study of the Roman interventions in Illyria during the period of 230 – 167 BC has never previously been treated on this scale, nor effectively with a synthesis of the various approaches and pieces of evidence that are now available. -
Study of Istrian Unmineable Coal Utilization
Study of Istrian Unmineable Coal Utilization Mario Klanfar a, Domagoj Vulin b, and Želimir Veinovi ćc a Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Zagreb, Croatia, [email protected] , CA b Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Zagreb, Croatia, [email protected] , CA c Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering, Zagreb, Croatia, [email protected] , CA Abstract: There are several approaches which can be used to estimate amounts of methane that could be extracted from the coal beds. Several selected sites in Labin basin were observed in order to decide if further researches are significant. Data on the composition of coal, the depths and thicknesses of coal layers were collected to assess methane content in coal by using the Langmuir isotherm. Detailed literature investigation was conducted with the objective to determine the best method of calculations with the scarce useful data that is available from the old coal mining reports. Curves of sorption were made and evaluation of the quality of each assessment as well. The fact that some of the largest CO 2 point sources in Croatia are in Istria (power plants near Plomin) was the argument for consideration of CO 2 injection. By comparing the sorption of pure CH 4 and sorption of CO 2, in order to maintain the pressure in a coal bed it was concluded that CO 2 injection could be suitable option for coal bed methane recovery. Keywords: CCS, coal bed methane, enhanced methane recovery, Labin basin 1. Introduction In order to mitigate the effect of the greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuels, CO 2 underground storage is one of perspective options. -
