How is the Governor General and the

Stanley Cup connected?

The Earl of Derby, also known as Lord Stanley, was the Canada’s sixth governor general. In 1893, Lord Stanley, an avid hockey fan, donated a trophy that would be given out annually to the top-ranking amateur hockey club. In 1926, the National Hockey League adopted the trophy as the top prize in professional hockey. That trophy bears Lord Stanley's name and is now known as the Stanley Cup! In 1945, Lord Stanley was inducted into the Canadian Hockey Hall of Fame and his trophy continues to be raised by the NHL champion at the conclusion of each hockey season.
