We strongly advise you not to book a flight until the MVV sticker has been placed in your passport.

I. Which permits are required?

Students from outside the EU/EER (Europe) who wish to attend a study programme at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences for more than 3 months are obliged to obtain a study residence permit.

Depending on your situation, you will need one or both of the following permits: • MVV = Entrance visa to enter the Netherlands • VVR = Study Residence Permit

II. Before arrival

As guarantor the Centre of International Affairs (CoIA) applies for an MVV and/or VVR on your behalf at the Dutch immigration office (IND). This process is done before you arrive in the Netherlands. As your guarantor we require that you provide us with proof of sufficient funds to cover your living expenses while studying in the Netherlands. This also means that from the moment you stop studying at the university, we also stop being your guarantor and inform the Dutch immigration office (IND) of this change in status. Your study residence permit will then be revoked. An MVV and/or VVR costs €171,00. This fee is specified on your invoice and is non-refundable. Students with the Sanmarinese and Israeli nationality are exempt paying for the MVV and/or VVR costs.

General overview of the visa procedure:

The amount transferred must include the amount requested on the invoice plus any bank transfer fees incurred.) Step 5 Please respect the deadline for receiving all documents/payments Step 6 Student Support then applies for your visa (MVV/VVR or only VVR) at the IND* Step 7 Your visa will be processed by the IND Step 8 We notify you when we receive approval of your MVV/VVR or only VVR application Step 9 MVV/VVR students need to make an appointment at the Dutch Embassy/consulate You must leave your passport at the Dutch Embassy for a couple of days VVR only students do not need to go the Dutch Embassy/consulate Step 10 We recommend not to book your flight until you have received the actual MVV in your passport. Step 11 Students who only need a VVR, need to visit the IND office after their arrival in The Netherlands to provide their biometrics. Name: Mariana Savitska Age: 20 years Nationality: Ukrainian Exchange programme: IBMS

Here I arrived and set my fi rst footsteps on Rotterdam ground

Hi my name is Mariana and Iʻm currently studying at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences. A year ago I started thinking to go to Rotterdam on my exchange. Iʻve been a student since September and after 4 months I consider myself as a good guide, knowing a lot about my new ‘homeʻ city. Iʻll take you through this guide, sharing a few of my most memorable experiences with you. This way I hope to give you a better picture of the student life in Rotterdam. Studying at Rotterdam University of Applied Sciences (RUAS) means studying in the dynamic harbour city of Rotterdam, located in the Netherlands. Rotterdam off ers the perfect location to embark on an international study career. Study in

In Rotterdam you’ll fi nd a lot of modern buildings, as much of the city was destroyed during World War II. Rotterdam is not only famous for its great architecture but also for its art. With more than 600,000 inhabitants, Rotterdam is the second largest city in the Netherlands.

Rotterdam gives me the impression of a completely new metropolis. Delicious food, smiling people and lots of birds that’s my fi rst impression. Rotterdam is also a combination of a business city, a cultural centre and a place where parties always take place.

Studying in Rotterdam means drinking coff ee before morning classes, repeating Dutch words for classmates, running during breaks to Albert Heijn (supermarket) to buy sandwiches and wraps. And always take an umbrella and a waterproof suit with you.

The city’s many festivals, concerts, museums and cafés makes it a perfect study destination. Over the last few years diff erent publications such as; The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal and Lonely Planet have defi ned Rotterdam as a ‘must visit’ destination. Find out for yourself and take this challenge by following one of our exchange programmes.

Rotterdam is located in the Netherlands, also known as Holland. For decades the country’s historical ties with other parts of the world has brought rich culture and ideas from abroad.

This makes the Netherlands a very tolerant and open-minded country. This openness is not only seen on a professional level, but also both socially and culturally. Therefore, the Netherlands is ideally suited for receiving students who seek to enrich their international knowledge.

17 million people live in an area of approximately 41,500 km², making the Netherlands one of the most densely populated countries in the world.

The Netherlands is not known for sunny weather and scorching temperatures. However, when I arrived at Dutch Kings Day on the 27th April. the end of August, I had plenty of time to enjoy the The national colour is ORANGE. sun. Even going into October! As the Netherlands is a small country, with fantastic public transport, I went to the beach a few times, and occassionaly took the train to Amsterdam and the Belguim capital, Brussels.

5 International atmosphere

Although Dutch is the national language, most people speak English. It is possible to survive without any Dutch language skills. However, learning Dutch is always a bonus, especially if you want to work in the Netherlands or truly integrate yourself during your stay.

Food you must try

Drop – The Dutch love liquorice - both the sweet and salty versions that are sold in all supermarkets. Kaas – The Netherlands is famous for their cheese, such as: Gouda, Leerdammer and Maaslander. Stroopwafels – Best when you buy them fresh at the market. Oliebollen – Traditionally eaten on New Year’s Eve. The best oliebollen in the Netherlands are sold in Rotterdam at Richard Visser’s oliebollen stand.
