The success of our events and the consistent and continuous support for festivals by means of a support model that is a source of inspiration for many other cities make us an important candidate for the IFEA Festival and Event City Award. The world changes, audiences change and it is useful to occasionally look closely at the direction. We recently did this again and documented our conclusions in a new vision that gives a boost to the development from a national to an international festival city, which was started a number of years ago. In the development of this vision we have gratefully used the input from the international and fraternal network that is IFEA. In that sense you, too, have contributed to the success of ‘Rotterdam, event city’. On behalf of the city government of Rotterdam, Mr. A. Every year small and large events attract hundreds of thousands of local residents and visitors from inside the Netherlands and abroad. ROTTERDAM WORLD EVENTS | Festival and event city award program ROTTERDAM WORLD EVENTS | Festival and event city award program Rotterdam has a rich festival tradition that is part of the DNA of the city and its citizens. The festivals are rooted in the city and connected with the character, history and culture of the city. With the festivals we celebrate our identity. Our event policy has been consistently implemented for many years. In 2006 the panel of judges that pronounced Rotterdam the best event city – and has done so more often than any other city in the country – wrote: “For more than 10 years the Rotterdam organization that supports and helps to develop events, Rotterdam Festivals, has been an example for other cities wanting to realize an effective event policy. Still, by using innovation and inven- tiveness, Rotterdam continuously manages to come up with new and much talked-about concepts … The Rotterdam events excel because of the function they perform for the city; from multicultural to fine art and everything in between, in an appropriate setting.” The success of the Rotterdam policy in the past decades was made possible because the city is home to many creative, experienced and professional festival organizers that all share a passion for this city. We are proud that they choose our city to work and live in. We’re also happy to have suppliers in every possible field, committed sponsors, enthusiastic support at all levels at the city departments and the invaluable efforts of the city’s police men and women. 4 5 Section I Community overview 8 Section II Festival and events: celebrating our identity 12 Section III Governmental support of festivals and events 14 Section IV Non-governmental community support of festivals and events 20 Section V ‘Community Capital’ generated by festivals & events 22 Section VI Extra credit 26 Celebrating Identity: 60 years festivals in Rotterdam 1950-2010 28 Appendix I Characteristics outdoor event locations Rotterdam 32 Appendix II (insert) Festival Overview Appendix III Notification letter 36 Davis Cup (Müllerpier 1994) Rotterdam 2007 City of Architecture ROTTERDAM WORLD EVENTS | Festival and event city award program 6 7 ‘ Rotterdam, Europe’s biggest port, is now one of the world’s most vibrant, exciting and fun cities too’ Financial Times (UK) Main Outdoor areas Coolsingel The Coolsingel is one of the main avenues and the symbolic heart of the city. CITIES AND THE “MULTICULTURAL STATE”: IMMIGRATION, MULTI- ETHNIC NEIGHBORHOODS, AND THE SOCIO-SPATIAL NEGOTIATION OF POLICY IN THE NETHERLANDS DISSERTATION Presented in Partial Fullfillment of the Requirements for the Degree Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of The Ohio State University By Annemarie Bodaar, M.A. * * * * * The Ohio State University 2008 Dissertation Committee: Dr. Mei-Po Kwan, Advisor Approved by: Dr. Eugene J. McCann Dr. Nancy Ettlinger _____________ Dr. Galey Modan Advisor Graduate Program in Geography Copyright by Annemarie Bodaar 2008 ABSTRACT Immigration is widely acknowledged to be a major social issue in Western European countries. In this context, the Netherlands was one of the few countries to commit itself to the ideal of a ‗multicultural state‘. While this policy ideal was intended to maintain the coherence of the increasingly multi-ethnic state, alleviate growing fear and suspicion of immigrants among sections of Dutch society, and overcome growing ethnic segregation in major cities, its implementation has produced a number of contradictions, however. There has been both a massive political shift in favor of anti- immigrant parties, and increases in segregation in the big cities. In this context the Nethelands has recently reconsidered its multicultural programs. While assimilation is gaining ground as the dominant discourse of immigrant integration in a number of liberal states, the Netherlands has experienced the most profound change away from multiculturalism. Dutch cities therefore could be considered laboratories for the analysis of changes in the way state actors and residents across the world are negotiating immigrant incorporation. This dissertation explores how policies aimed at immigrant integration developed, were implemented and how they were negotiated when implemented in specific multi- ethnic neighborhoods and its effects for neighborhoods, cities and the nation.

Introduction Gentrification has become the preferred urban policy instrument of choice for states all over the world. Public-private partnerships of city governments and property developers actively intervene in neighborhoods in order to change its socio-economic profile. The make-up of the neighborhoods changes, replacing the penniless by the more fortunate. From a sporadic process restricted to the city-center of a few cities, it has spread both vertically and laterally. It is no longer exclusively found in central urban areas, but also in peripheral neighborhoods. Occurrences are not limited to the large cities of the Anglo- sphere, the phenomenon can now also be found in Rio de Janeiro or in Rotterdam (Smith, 2002: 439). In Rotterdam, 'urban restructuring' is on the forefront of the policy agenda. The municipal city government and housing associations seduce private developers to invest in owner-occupied housing disadvantaged neighborhoods.

The process depicted is called the borrowing. Borrowings can be found on various levels of the language: in the vocabulary, morphology, syntax, semantics or other. The English as a global language shows an important role as a source language. The aim of this paper is to show, to which extent the English language influences the German language focusing on its vocabulary. The process of borrowing, which leads to the loanwords is of long duration and is differenciated into many steps. A word can be labeled as a loanword when it has more or less adapted to the target language and occurs respectively in the dictionaries of that language.

  • Codarts Research Festival, That Will Take Place on Thursday 11 March 2021
Dear reader, A wholehearted welcome to the fifth edition of the Codarts Research Festival, that will take place on Thursday 11 March 2021. Due to the continuing covid-19 pandemic this will be an online event, with live streamed presentations in ZOOM 1, and online presentations in ZOOM 2. This year's edition has a distinct RASL*) -flavor, as the theme is ‘Social engagement and the Arts.’ As the ‘traditional’ jobs in the arts are under increased pressure, and our society is faced by seemingly insurmountable problems, like climate change and pollution, but also social disintegration and loneliness, many artists feel the need to reposition themselves and look for ways to contribute. The covid-19 pandemic has made these problems even more acute. The Research Festival will address these issues, with (inter)national speakers from the world of dance, music and theater, next to a variety of research presentations from Codarts students and staff. And you are invited to caste your vote for the audience award during the annual Master research competition. *) RASL is the Rotterdam Arts and Science Lab. An intense collaboration between Codarts Rotterdam, Arts & Culture Studies (EUR), Erasmus University College (EUR) and Willem de Kooning Academy, with the aim to examine the relationship between the arts and society in a transdisciplinary way. If you haven’t done so already, we kindly request you to register for the Festival using this link: https://codarts.zoom.us/meeting/register/tJIoc-ytpz0tGt2-wNg97GnMHAcBsoMGKw6A Upon registration you will receive a confirmation and the ZOOM link plus password that gives you access to the Festival on the day itself.
