Mošćenički Pinel 2016 – a review of the artworks The topic of this year's Mošćenički Pinel arts workshop, Mošćenice reality and fantasy, is closely related to Slavic mythology. Continuing the research and reflections on the influence of this mythology in the Liburnia area in the projects of the Katedra Čakavskog Sabora Association of Mošćenička Draga, the participants of this art colony have become explorers of real and imaginary landscapes which they have tried to convey in their artworks using different artistic visions and expressions. The mythological stories depict the world as a holy tree, usually an oak, whose branches and bark represent the living world of the heavens and mortals, the sky and the earth, while its roots symbolise the underworld and the world of the dead. The ruler of the world of the living is the god Perun, who is constantly challenged by his opponent Veles, the water god of the underworld. Apart from stealing cattle from Perun, Veles also kidnaps his son Jarilo and his wife. In return, Perun hurls lightning at Veles, who turns into various animals and hides behind trees, houses or people. In the end, in Veles's ritual death, rain falls from his body, after which the sun begins to shine again, establishing the balance between the earth and the underworld. In the past, people used these myths to explain daily weather conditions. Another myth served as an explanation for the change of the seasons: spring started when Perun's son Jarilo escaped from Veles, and his entering the holy community with his sister Morana marked the summer period. -

The symbol’s broad ability to personify tragic events created a versatile system of imagery that transcended its folkloric derivations into the realm of Russian literature, becoming a constant literary device from eighteenth century to post-Soviet fiction. The vampire’s literary usage arose during and after the reign of Catherine the Great and continued into each politically turbulent time that followed. The authors examined in this thesis, Afanasiev, Gogol, Bulgakov, and Lukyanenko, each depicted the issues and internal turmoil experienced in Russia during their respective times. By employing the common mythos of the vampire, the issues suggested within the literature are presented indirectly to the readers giving literary life to pressing societal dilemmas. The purpose of this thesis is to ascertain the vampire’s function within Russian literary societal criticism by first identifying the shifts in imagery in the selected Russian vampiric works, then examining how the shifts relate to the societal changes of the different time periods. -

Czech Republic Today
Rich in History 1 2 Magic Crossroads Whenever European nations were set in motion, they met in a rather small area called the Czech Republic today. Since the early Middle Ages, this area was crossed by long trade routes from the severe North to the sunny South; at the beginning of the first millennium, Christianity emerged from the West, and at its end communism arrived from the East. For six hundred years, the country was an independent Czech kingdom, for three hundred years, it belonged among Austro-Hungarian Empire lands, and since 1918 it has been a republic. In the 14th century, under the Bohemian and German King and Roman Emperor Charles IV, as well as in the 16th century under the Emperor Rudolf II, the country enjoyed a favourable position in European history and also played a great role internationally in the arts and in social affairs. In 1989, the whole world admired the Czechoslovak “velvet revolution” lead by charismatic dramatist Václav Havel, which put an end to socialist experimentation. Numerous famous architects, who built Romanesque churches in Germany but were no longer commissioned to build in their home countries due to the coming Gothic period, succeeded there; at the same time, the French type of Gothic architecture took root in Bohemia. A number of Italian Renaissance or Baroque architects, painters and sculptors, who crossed the Alps to find new opportunity for creating master works and look for well-paid jobs, were hired by members of Czech nobility and clergy; astonished by the mastery of Czech builders and craftsmen with whom they cooperated, they created wonderful castles and breathtaking Catholic churches. -

Ko još ne pamti badnjedansko pijukanje oko kuće i posnu večeru na slami, ili priče o seoskoj svadbi kada je mlada ljubila ognjište ili, opet, sećanja na klanje petla na temelju nove kuće? Sve su to prežici kulta predaka naročito poštovanog u one dane kada se verovalo da su preci sa nama, tu, oko nas, da nas prate, čuvaju i poučavaju. -

We both have visited Bulgaria many times, we have had many personal friends among its scholars and statesmen, and we feel a deep sympathy for the tragic plight of this long-suffering Slavic nation with its industrious and hard-working people. We both feel also that it is an injustice to Bulgaria and a loss to American Slavic scholarship that, in spite of the importance of Bulgaria for the Slavic world, so little attention is paid to the country's cultural contributions. This is the more deplorable for American influence in Bulgaria was great, even before World War I. Many Bulgarians were educated in Robert Col- lege in Constantinople and after World War I in the American College in Sofia, one of the institutions supported by the Near East Foundation. Many Bulgarian professors have visited the United States in happier times. So it seems unfair that Ameri- cans and American universities have ignored so completely the development of the Bulgarian genius and culture during the past century. -
