4 JAK ROzuměT „POHANSKÝM RELIKTům“: FolKLÓR BALTSKÝCH ZEMÍ JAKO ZDROJ PRO STUDIUM PředKřesťANSKÝCH TRADIC STARÝCH BALTů Anglický termín folklore, přeložitelný do češtiny jako „lidová tradice“ či „lidové vě- dění“, začal být evropskými vzdělanci užíván před polovinou 19. století.1 V kon- textu historie moderní vědy se jedná o zásadní epochu, kdy vznikala v sekulární podobě většina současných humanitních oborů, včetně organizovaného studia folklóru. Evropská města prodělávala touto dobou druhou vlnu „industriální revoluce“, spojenou s modernizací, masovými imigracemi venkovské populace a pozvolnou „detradicionalizací“ v širších vrstvách společnosti. Modernizační procesy přitom neovlivňovaly pouze kulturní prostředí měst, ale prosakovaly v různých podobách i na venkov. Důsledkem toho zde začínají mizet dlouhodobě konzervované kulturní elementy, nezřídka poměrně „archaického“ stáří. Zároveň s těmito procesy však již druhá generace romantických intelektuálů mezi Atlan- tikem a Volhou usilovně studuje kulturní dějiny dílčích (obvykle svých vlastních) národů, zpravidla se zvláštním zřetelem k jejich historické genezi a identickým specifikům.2 Tradice udržované venkovskými obyvateli, do 18. století městskou inteligencí spíše ignorované či opovrhované, získávají ještě před rokem 1800 ros- toucí pozornost a následně i roli „stavebního materiálu“ při procesu „budování“ národních identit.3 1 Za původce anglického termínu folklore, který vytlačil starší latinismus popular antiquities, bývá obvykle považován spisovatel a amatérský historik William John Thoms (1803–1885). Významnou inspiraci pro jeho zájem o lidové kultury představovala díla Jacoba Grimma (1785–1863) a Wilhelma Grimma (1786–1859), průkopníků německé (a v podstatě i evropské) folkloristiky. 2 Spojitost nacionalismu a folkloristiky během 18.–20. století analyzuje např. Universal Mythology: Stories That Circle The World Lydia L. This installation is about mythology and the commonalities that occur between cultures across the world. According to folklorist Alan Dundes, myths are sacred narratives that explain the evolution of the world and humanity. He defines the sacred narratives as “a story that serves to define the fundamental worldview of a culture by explaining aspects of the natural world, and delineating the psychological and social practices and ideals of a society.” Stories explain how and why the world works and I want to understand the connections in these distant mythologies by exploring their existence and theories that surround them. This painting illustrates the connection between separate cultures through their polytheistic mythologies. It features twelve deities, each from a different mythology/religion. By including these gods, I have allowed for a diversified group of cultures while highlighting characters whose traits consistently appear in many mythologies. It has the Celtic supreme god, Dagda; the Norse trickster god, Loki; the Japanese moon god, Tsukuyomi; the Aztec sun god, Huitzilopochtli; the Incan nature goddess, Pachamama; the Egyptian water goddess, Tefnut; the Polynesian fire goddess, Mahuika; the Inuit hunting goddess, Arnakuagsak; the Greek fate goddesses, the Moirai: Clotho, Lachesis, and Atropos; the Yoruba love goddess, Oshun; the Chinese war god, Chiyou; and the Hindu death god, Yama. The painting was made with acrylic paint on mirror. Connection is an important element in my art, and I incorporate this by using the mirror to bring the audience into the piece, allowing them to see their reflection within the parting of the clouds, whilst viewing the piece. -

Augustine and the Art of Ruling in the Carolingian Imperial Period This volume is an investigation of how Augustine was received in the Carolingian period, and the elements of his thought which had an impact on Carolingian ideas of ‘state’, rulership and ethics. It focuses on Alcuin of York and Hincmar of Rheims, authors and political advisers to Charlemagne and to Charles the Bald, respectively. It examines how they used Augustinian political thought and ethics, as manifested in the De civitate Dei, to give more weight to their advice. A comparative approach sheds light on the differences between Charlemagne’s reign and that of his grandson. It scrutinizes Alcuin’s and Hincmar’s discussions of empire, rulership and the moral conduct of political agents during which both drew on the De civitate Dei, although each came away with a different understanding. By means of a philological–historical approach, the book offers a deeper reading and treats the Latin texts as political discourses defined by content and language. Sophia Moesch is currently an SNSF-funded postdoctoral fellow at the University of Oxford, working on a project entitled ‘Developing Principles of Good Govern- ance: Latin and Greek Political Advice during the Carolingian and Macedonian Reforms’. Chapter 3 Quiz What lead to Joseph Campbell's interest in comparative mythology? When Campbell was a child, he became fascinated with Native American Culture. This led him to a lifelong passion for myth and storytelling. When Campbell was studying maths and biology, he recognized that he is inclined towards humanities. Soon he became an English literature student at Columbia University. Campbell was interested in knowledge above all else. In 1924 Campbell traveled to Europe with his family. On the ship during his return trip, he encountered the Messiah elect of the Theosophical Society, Jiddu Krishnamurti. They discussed Indian philosophy which leads to Campbell’s interest in Hindu and Indian philosophy. Campbell studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany. He learned to read and speak French and German. When Campbell did not have any work after his graduation (in depression era), he used to read nine hours a day for five years. He soon discovered the works of Carl Jung who is the founder of analytical psychology. Campbell could recognize recurring patterns of all the stories he had read, from Carl Jung’s work. This must have encouraged Joseph Campbell in comparative mythology. How did Joseph Campbell become the world's foremost scholar on mythology? How did the Great Depression benefit his education? Joseph Campbell received BA in English literature and MA in Medieval literature from Columbia University. Campbell also received a fellowship from Columbia University to study in Europe. He studied Old French, Provencal and Sanskrit at the University of Paris and the University of Munich in Germany. -

THE INDO-EUROPEAN FAMILY — THE LINGUISTIC EVIDENCE by Brian D. Joseph, The Ohio State University 0. Introduction A stunning result of linguistic research in the 19th century was the recognition that some languages show correspondences of form that cannot be due to chance convergences, to borrowing among the languages involved, or to universal characteristics of human language, and that such correspondences therefore can only be the result of the languages in question having sprung from a common source language in the past. Such languages are said to be “related” (more specifically, “genetically related”, though “genetic” here does not have any connection to the term referring to a biological genetic relationship) and to belong to a “language family”. It can therefore be convenient to model such linguistic genetic relationships via a “family tree”, showing the genealogy of the languages claimed to be related. For example, in the model below, all the languages B through I in the tree are related as members of the same family; if they were not related, they would not all descend from the same original language A. In such a schema, A is the “proto-language”, the starting point for the family, and B, C, and D are “offspring” (often referred to as “daughter languages”); B, C, and D are thus “siblings” (often referred to as “sister languages”), and each represents a separate “branch” of the family tree. B and C, in turn, are starting points for other offspring languages, E, F, and G, and H and I, respectively. Thus B stands in the same relationship to E, F, and G as A does to B, C, and D. -

Laudatio Prof. Dr. Ulrich Albrecht, FU Berlin, Otto-Suhr-Institut Sehr verehrte Familie Röhl, sehr verehrte Festversammlung! Im Wintersemester 1988/89 war ich Gast an der TH Darmstadt und augenscheinlich Zeuge der Entstehung der IANUS-Gruppe. Aufgrund einer über die Jahre anhaltenden persönlichen Verbindung möchte ich diesen Tag der Freude nutzen, um die Laudatio eher heiter anzulegen - weniger als wissenschaftlich korrekte Würdigung der Tätigkeit der IANIER (dies auch), sondern als Reflexion über den selbstgewählten Namen der Gruppe. Wer oder was ist IANUS? Die Artbeitsgruppe hat seinerzeit gewiß mit Bedacht den Namen dieses antiken Gottes gewählt, als Vorbild. Also weiter gefragt: Was hat Janus seinerzeit und in der Neuzeit gemacht - schließlich geht es um eine Laudatio. Wer waren die Partner oder gar die Partnerin? Beim antiken Janus ist das bekannt, beim modernen weiß ich es nicht. In beiden Fällen sind aber Folgen aus den Partnerschaften entstanden, die viele Ähnlichkeiten aufweisen, wie gleich aufgezeigt werden wird. Schließlich gefragt: Was wird aus IANUS, was ist seinerzeit aus Janus geworden? Wer ist Janus? Im alten Rom der Gott der Anfänge, der Türen und Tore, der Durchblicke und Durchgänge. Das ist eine bezeichnende Perspektive für die heutigen IANIer: der Arbeitsgruppe ging es und geht es um Anfänge, um Durchblicke, um Verbindungen zwischen Naturwissenschaft und Gesellschafts-wissenschaft. In der bildenden Kunst wird Janus dargestellt mit zwei - in entgegengesetzte Richtung blickenden - Gesichtern, manchmal gar mit vier Gesichtern. Er sieht einfach alles, darunter - so ja auch der moderne IANUS - was andere nicht sehen. Sein griechischer Vorgänger wurde Panoptes, der Allesseher, genannt, er war einer der mythischen Giganten. Der blickte einfach alles, und die Griechen stellten sich vor, daß sein ganzer Kopf mit Augen besetzt war. -

Transformations of the Lithuanian God Perk\Nas
Transformations of the Lithuanian God Perk\nas Nijol] Laurinkien] In the article, later substitutions for the god Perkunas are analysed. Most frequently appear the names of the prophet Eliah (Alijošius) and St. George (Jurgis) as the Christian replacements diffused from the Lithuanian region, which borders on Belarus where converting to Christianity began earlier. With the fall of the old culture a great many traditions indicated the god of thunder as undergoing a complete transformation into new characters, mostly those of modern religion. Lithuanian mythology also gives evidence of similar processes. The article aims at an analysis of further equivalents of Perk'nas, which reflect the mentioned process, as well as an attempt to delineate the possible reasons for these substitutes obtained by the god of thunder and their prevalence in Lithuania. The most common substitutes of Perk'nas are the prophet Elijah (Elijošius, Alijošius) and St George (Jurgis). These Christian characters as equivalents to the god of thunder are also known among eastern Slavs. Therefore, a logical question follows on the nature of such a peculiar concurrence, which will receive due attention in the article. Lithuanian folklore often observes Elijah mentioned together with Enoch (both, as the Bible suggests, having been so close to God that they were brought to dwell in heaven when still alive). Legends about Elijah and Enoch feature them being related to the motifs of old religion and those of Christianity (LPK 3459). From the latter, associations of the mentioned characters with the god of thunder can be obviously defined: when Elijah or Enoch rides in the heaven, it thunders and lightning is flashing: Seniai, labai seniai, kada dar Adomo ir Ievos nebuvę, Dievas sutvcrc AlijošiC ir Anoką.
