  • Pressemeldung Tortoise
• Development of Musical Ideas in Compositions by Tortoise
DEVELOPMENT OF MUSICAL IDEAS IN COMPOSITIONS BY TORTOISE Reiner Krämer Prologue For more than 25 years, the Chicago-based experimental rock band Tortoise has crossed over multiple popular music genres (ambient music, krautrock, dub, electronica, drums and bass, reggae, etc.) as well as different types of jazz music, and has made use of minimalist Western art music.1 The group is often labeled a pioneer of the »post-rock« genre. Allegedly, Simon Reynolds first used the term in his review of the album Hex by the English east Lon- don band Bark Psychosis (Reynolds 1994a) and shortly afterwards in his arti- cle »Shaking the Rock Narcotic« (Reynolds 1994b: 28-32). In connection to Tortoise he used »post-rock« in his review article of their 1996 album Mil- lions Now Living Will Never Die (Reynolds 1996). Reynolds describes music he labels as ›post-rock‹ where bands use guitars »in [non-rock] ways« to manipulate »timbre and texture rather than riff[s]« and »augment rock's basic guitar-bass-drums lineup with digital technology such as samplers and sequencers« (Reynolds 2017: 509). Most members of Tortoise act as multi- instrumentalists that play different combinations of instruments at different times. As Jeanette Leech (2017: 16) has stated, a typical Tortoise stage set- up can feature vibraphones, marimbas, two drum sets, and a multitude of synthesizers. With regards to the instrumental setup Leech draws up paral- lels with progressive rock of the 1970s but points to one decisive difference within the genres: »for Tortoise, the range of instrumentation [is] about creating mood, not showboating« (ibid.).

  • The Lost Generation How UK Post-Rock Fell in Love with the Moon, and a Bunch of Bands Nobody Listened to Defined the 1990S by Nitsuh Abebe
Pitchfork | http://pitchforkmedia.com/features/weekly/05-07-11-lost-generation.shtml 11 July 2005 The Lost Generation How UK post-rock fell in love with the moon, and a bunch of bands nobody listened to defined the 1990s by Nitsuh Abebe his decade’s indie-kid rhetoric is all about excitement, all about fun, all about fierce. TThe season’s buzz tour pairs ... with Soundsystem, scrappy globo-pop with the kind of rock disco that tries awfully hard to blow fuses. The venues they don’t hit will play host to a new wave of stylish guitar bands, playing stylish uptempo pop, decamping to stylish afterparties. Bloggers will chatter about glittery chart hits, rock kids will buy vintage metal t-shirts and act like heshers, eggheads will rave about the latest in spazzed-out noise, and everyone will keep talking about dancing, right down to the punks. Yeah, there are more exceptions than there are examples—when aren’t there, dude?—but the vibe is all there: We keep talking like we want action, like we want something explosive. The overriding vibe of the s—serene, cerebral, dreamy—was anything but explosive. Blame grunge for that one. Just a few years into the decade, and all that muddy rock attitude and fuzzy alterna-sound had bubbled up into the mainstream, flooding the scene with new kids, young kids, even (gasp!) fratboys. Big kids in flannel, freshly enamored of rock’s “aggres- sion” and “rebellion”—they were rock jocks, they tried to start mosh pits at Liz Phair shows. So where was a refined little smarty-pants indie snob to turn? Well: Why not something spacey and elegant? Why not sit comfortably home, stoned or non-stoned, dropping out into a dreamier little world of sound? It had been a few years since My Bloody Valentine released Loveless, and there were plenty of similarly floaty shoegazer bands to catch up on.

March 7, 2016 For Immediate Release TORTOISE KICK OFF NORTH AMERICAN TOUR THIS WEEK IN SUPPORT OF THE CATASTROPHIST PRESENT LIVE VIDEO FOR “SHAKE HANDS WITH DANGER” h9ps://youtu.be/_qxLTZ6TOps NEW ALBUM OUT NOW ON THRILL JOCKEY “It seems to want to be indisJnct, to lie beyond trackable senJment or emoJon or even clear historical markers. But it can’t be: It’s part of a much greater, nearly 50-year long story of rock bands wiggling away from rock.” — The New York Times “…the Tortoise mix of pelvic trance grooves and jazzy changes remains disJncJve.” — Rolling Stone “…so many disparate elements and influences might sound like a crazy mess, but The Catastrophist has the same kind of measured, sanguine quality that has been the hallmark of almost every Tortoise album. None of this should make sense, but for some reason all of it does.” — Stereogum “Chicago’s Tortoise is a genre unto itself: cited as a progenitor of post-rock, and clearly indebted to its home town’s history of improvisers and fusionists, Tortoise is an American underground insJtuJon.” — Boston Globe “The Catastrophist bristles with le_ turns and trap doors.” — Chicago Tribune Following an extensive European tour and two sold out release shows in the band’s hometown of Chicago, revered instrumental group Tortoise are set to embark on their first major North American tour in support of their new album, The Catastrophist, just out on ThriLL Jockey Records. In anJcipaJon of the tour kick-off, Tortoise are sharing a special live video of the band performing “Shake Hands With Danger,” a hypnoJc, bass-and-beat album highlight, filmed at the band’s in-the-round album release shows at Thalia Hall in Chicago this past January.
