October 6, 2015 TORTOISE RETURN with the CATASTROPHIST October 6, 2015 For Immediate Release TORTOISE RETURN WITH THE CATASTROPHIST, FIRST NEW ALBUM SINCE 2009, OUT JANUARY 22ND ON THRILL JOCKEY RECORDS LISTEN TO DEBUT SINGLE, “GESCEAP” https://youtu.be/7ArKJ5k1Vnc TORTOISE TO TOUR NORTH AMERICA AND EUROPE NEXT YEAR (above image by Andrew Paynter) Simply put, Tortoise has spent nearly 25 years making music that defies description. While the Chicago- based instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its revered and influential six-album discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even stubbornly, their own. This fact remains true on The Catastrophist, Tortoise’s first studio album in nearly seven years. It’s an album where moody, synth-swept jams like the opening title track cozy up next to hypnotic, bass-and-beat missives like “Shake Hands With Danger,” a downright strange cover of David Essex’s 1973 radio smash, “Rock On,” sung by U.S. Maple/Dead Rider’s Todd Rittmann, and the bittersweet, honest-to-goodness soul ballad “Yonder Blue,” sung by Yo La Tengo’s Georgia Hubley. Throughout, the songs transcend expectations as often as they delight the eardrums. Tortoise, comprised of multi-instrumentalists Dan Bitney, John Herndon, Doug McCombs, John McEntire and Jeff Parker, has always thrived on sudden bursts of inspiration. And for The Catastrophist, the spark came in 2010 when the group was commissioned by the City of Chicago to compose a suite of music rooted in its ties to the area’s noted jazz and improvised music communities. Tortoise then performed those five loose themes at a handful of concerts, and “when we finally got around to talking about a new record, the obvious solution to begin with was to take those pieces and see what else we could do with them,” says McEntire. “It turned out that for them to work for Tortoise, they needed a bit more of a rethink in terms of structure. They’re all pretty different in the sense that at first they were just heads and solos. Now, they're orchestrated and complex.” The album’s debut single “Gesceap” embodies the transformation of the original suite commissions, as it morphs from two gently intersecting synth lines into a pounding, frenzied full-band finish. “To a certain extent it’s more of a reflection of how we actually sound when we play live,” says McEntire of Tortoise’s heavier side. As ever, Tortoise has conjured sounds on The Catastrophist that aren’t being purveyed anywhere else in music today. There’s a deeply intuitive interplay between the group members that comes only from two decades of experimentation, revision and improvisation. And at a time when our brains are constantly bombarded by myriad distractions, The Catastrophist reminds us that there’s something much greater out there. All we have to do is listen. Tortoise’s The Catastrophist is out January 22nd on Thrill Jockey Records, and available for pre-order now. The band will play a special hometown record release show in January, and will tour North America next spring. All dates are below. More will be announced soon. • Pressemeldung Tortoise
Synopsis Will Shepard is an American satellite-mapping engineer contracted to create a new, more accurate survey of the country of Armenia. Within the industry, his solitary work - land-surveying satellite images to check for accuracy and resolve anomalies - is called “ground-truthing”. He’s been doing it on his own, for years, all over the world. But on this trip, his measurements are not adding up. Will meets Gadarine Najarian at a rural hotel. Tough and intriguing, she’s an expatriate Armenian art photographer on her first trip back in ages, passionately trying to figure out what kind of relationship - if any - she still has with her home country and culture. Fiercely independent, Gadarine is struggling to resolve the life she’s led abroad with the Armenian roots that run so deeply through her. There is an instant, unconscious bond between these two lone travelers; they impulsively decide to continue together. Never before has the fearless post-jazz, trans-continental trio São Paulo Underground sounded more confident than here on their fifth album and third release for Cuneiform. Weaving together a borderless electro-acoustic tapestry of North and South American, African and Asian, traditional folk and modern jazz, rock and electronica, the trio create music at once intimate and universal. On Cantos Invisíveis, nine tracks celebrate humanity by evoking lost haunts, enduring love, and the sheer delirious joy of making music together. São Paulo Underground fully manifests its expansive vision of a universal global music, one that blurs edges, transcends genres, defies national and temporal borders, and embraces humankind in its myriad physical and spiritual dimensions. Featuring three multi-instrumentalists, São Paulo Underground is the creation of Chicago-reared polymath Rob Mazurek (cornet, Mellotron, modular synthesizer, Moog Paraphonic, OP-1, percussion and voice) and two Brazilian masters of modern psycho- Tropicalia -- Mauricio Takara (drums, cavaquinho, electronics, Moog Werkstatt, percussion and voice) and Guilherme Granado (keyboards, synthesizers, sampler, percussion and voice).

  • Development of Musical Ideas in Compositions by Tortoise
DEVELOPMENT OF MUSICAL IDEAS IN COMPOSITIONS BY TORTOISE Reiner Krämer Prologue For more than 25 years, the Chicago-based experimental rock band Tortoise has crossed over multiple popular music genres (ambient music, krautrock, dub, electronica, drums and bass, reggae, etc.) as well as different types of jazz music, and has made use of minimalist Western art music.1 The group is often labeled a pioneer of the »post-rock« genre. Allegedly, Simon Reynolds first used the term in his review of the album Hex by the English east Lon- don band Bark Psychosis (Reynolds 1994a) and shortly afterwards in his arti- cle »Shaking the Rock Narcotic« (Reynolds 1994b: 28-32). In connection to Tortoise he used »post-rock« in his review article of their 1996 album Mil- lions Now Living Will Never Die (Reynolds 1996). Reynolds describes music he labels as ›post-rock‹ where bands use guitars »in [non-rock] ways« to manipulate »timbre and texture rather than riff[s]« and »augment rock's basic guitar-bass-drums lineup with digital technology such as samplers and sequencers« (Reynolds 2017: 509). Most members of Tortoise act as multi- instrumentalists that play different combinations of instruments at different times. As Jeanette Leech (2017: 16) has stated, a typical Tortoise stage set- up can feature vibraphones, marimbas, two drum sets, and a multitude of synthesizers. With regards to the instrumental setup Leech draws up paral- lels with progressive rock of the 1970s but points to one decisive difference within the genres: »for Tortoise, the range of instrumentation [is] about creating mood, not showboating« (ibid.).

  • Indie Mixtape 20 Is with Kali Masi, Who Has a Very SpeciC Technique for Gift Giving
:: View email as a web page :: The last time I spoke with Ryley Walker, he wasn't far removed from the darkest period of his life. In the spring of 2019, the inventive guitarist and songwriter — who's also known for his hilarious social media presence — checked himself into rehab for drug and alcohol dependency. The decision came after Walker came close to taking his own life while on tour in New Mexico. Thankfully, times are much better these days for the 31-year-old Illinois native. Last week, he released Course In Fable, his nest studio album to date. A die-hard fan of the English pop-prog band Genesis and a devout student of Chicago post-rock, Walker has somehow merged these inuences on Fable, stitching together multi-part songs heavy on wonky guitar solos and unexpected time signature changes. In the studio, he was assisted by John McEntire, a Chicago indie legend known for his work with Tortoise and The Sea And Cake. The result is one of 2021's most unabashedly gorgeous and grand indie records. Check out our interview with Ryley here. -- Steven Hyden, Uproxx Cultural Critic and author of This Isn't Happening: Radiohead's "Kid A" and the Beginning of the 21st Century In case you missed it... The new Indiecast visualizer is all about lo- bedroom pop that took the indie scene by storm in the 2010s. Check it out above or right here. The latest episode of Indiecast also had Ian Cohen digging deep into Bandcamp for some new gems. Festivals are starting to gear up for a busy fall season.

Dallas Tortoise - Dallas Observer 3/16/12 3:58 PM Tortoise Standards (Thrill Jockey) By Jessica Parker published: March 29, 2001 The first discordant moment of Standards, the latest album from Tortoise, signals a new direction for the Chicago instrumentalists. Actually, it's as if Tortoise has not only changed directions but run the train completely off the track, the resulting sound being the freight engine barreling through pine and brush. The first two minutes of said track, "Seneca," play like Jimi Hendrix distorting the national anthem at Woodstock--raucous, fuzzed-up electric noise. (Coincidentally, a skewed American flag adorns the cover of Standards.) Drums beaten to a pulp, cymbals crashing louder than jets and an ambling electric guitar segue into a tight drum solo, bumping bass and an ornate harpsichord melody sharpened with handclaps. Brilliant. "Seneca" is a perfect mission statement to a near-perfect album. Like Radiohead, Tortoise exists in its own world, working from the inside out. The band takes cues from other genres, true, but emerges with a sound uniquely its own. Standards is the kind of album that demands to be heard through headphones so every scratch, effect and pin drop can be absorbed through the ears into the bones. You always knew they could do it. It just seemed inevitable that Tortoise would let loose on its funk tendencies and produce an album as percussive and provocative as Standards. Percussionist/studio genius John McEntire's funky, elastic production for Stereolab hinted that this white man could groove. A few other projects along the way, including the Warp Back to Earth Peter Thomas tribute, demonstrated McEntire's studio wizardry.

The Squirrel Bait and Rodan genealogies continued to dominate Kentucky's and Chicago's post-rock scene during the 1990s. Half of Rodan, i.e. Tara Jane O'Neil (now on vocals and guitar) and Kevin Coultas, formed Sonora Pine with keyboardist and guitarist Sean Meadows, violinist Samara Lubelski and pianist Rachel Grimes. Their debut album, Sonora Pine (1996), basically applied Rodan's aesthetics to the format of the folk lullaby. Another member of Rodan, guitarist Jeff Mueller, formed June Of 44 (11), a sort of supergroup comprising Sonora Pine's guitarist Sean Meadows, Codeine's drummer and keyboardist Doug Scharin, and bassist and trumpet player Fred Erskine. Engine Takes To The Water (1995) signaled the evolution of "slo-core" towards a coldly neurotic form, which achieved a hypnotic and catatonic tone, besides a classic austerity, on the mini-album Tropics And Meridians (1996). Sustained by abrasive and inconclusive guitar doodling, mutant rhythm and off-key counterpoint of violin and trumpet, Four Great Points (1998) metabolized dub, raga, jazz, pop in a theater of calculated gestures.
