A Strange Loop
A Strange Loop / Who we are Our vision We believe in theater as the most human and immediate medium to tell the stories of our time, and affirm the primacy and centrality of the playwright to the form. Our writers We support each playwright’s full creative development and nurture their unique voice, resulting in a heterogeneous mix of as many styles as there are artists. Our productions We share the stories of today by the writers of tomorrow. These intrepid, diverse artists develop plays and musicals that are relevant, intelligent, and boundary-pushing. Our plays reflect the world around us through stories that can only be told on stage. Our audience Much like our work, the 60,000 people who join us each year are curious and adventurous. Playwrights is committed to engaging and developing audiences to sustain the future of American theater. That’s why we offer affordably priced tickets to every performance to young people and others, and provide engaging content — both onsite and online — to delight and inspire new play lovers in NYC, around the country, and throughout the world. Our process We meet the individual needs of each writer in order to develop their work further. Our New Works Lab produces readings and workshops to cultivate our artists’ new projects. Through our robust commissioning program and open script submission policy, we identify and cultivate the most exciting American talent and help bring their unique vision to life. Our downtown programs …reflect and deepen our mission in numerous ways, including the innovative curriculum at our Theater School, mutually beneficial collaborations with our Resident Companies, and welcoming myriad arts and education not-for-profits that operate their programs in our studios. -

How We Beat the Great Depression Chapter 1 Finding Paradise On the southwest corner of the United States there is a place that we called home for thirteen years. Mexico lay to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, with the Coronado Islands looming up fourteen miles from shore, and the sleepy little village of Imperial Beach with San Diego and Point Loma in the distance to the north. To the east, San Miguel and the Otay Mountains and the peaks of the Coastal Range made a beautiful, panoramic backdrop to a scene that to me is unforgettable. To the local folk this marshy land was called the "Tiajuana Sloughs" because the Tijuana river, originating in Mexico, ran through the town of Tijuana and across the International Border to the Pacific Ocean. The river flowed when, and if, there was enough rainfall in the mountains during the rainy season. Long after we moved from there, the name of the sloughs was changed to the Tijuana Estuary. A salt works was located there before the big floods in the spring of 1916. Local historians say a fellow by the name of Charles Hatfield caused the flood with his famous rainmaking machine. The city of San Diego hired him to end a long drought, and soon afterward, the rains started to fall. It rained for weeks until almost everything in San Diego was flooded or washed away. By the time we move to the sloughs, the only things left to mark the salt works site were old dikes that bordered the evaporation ponds. -
Mechanical Properties and Durability of Polypropylene and Steel Fiber-Reinforced Recycled Aggregates Concrete (FRRAC): a Review

The treated CDEW can be used as recycled aggregate to replace natural aggregate, which can not only reduce environmental pollution and construction-related resource waste caused by CDEW, but also save natural resources. However, the mechanical properties and durability of Recycled Aggregates Concrete (RAC) are generally worse than that of ordinary concrete. Various fiber or mineral materials are usually used in RAC to improve the mechanical properties and durability of the matrix. In RAC, polypropylene (PP) fiber and steel fiber (SF) are two kinds most commonly used fiber materials, which can enhance the strength and toughness of RAC and compensate the defects of RAC to some extent. In this paper, the literature on PP fiber- and SF-reinforced RAC (FRRAC) is reviewed, with a focus on the consistence, mechanical performance (compressive strength, tensile strength, stress–strain relationship, elastic modulus, and shear strength), durability (water absorption, chloride permeability, carbonation, freeze–thaw cycling, and shrinkage), and microstructure. -
First-Plymouth Congregational Church, Lincoln, Nebraska (Article Reprinted from the American Organist Dated January 1999)
Schoenstein & Co., Benicia, California First-Plymouth Congregational Church, Lincoln, Nebraska (Article reprinted from The American Organist dated January 1999) Page 1 of 8 Gallery organ. The façade mirrors the chancel façade and is also made of quarter-sawn white oak with Art Deco details. (photo: Lou Hurst) This is the fourth in a series of large instruments in our “American Romantic” style with tonal variety and dynamic range of symphonic proportions. It is also the “Magnum Opus” to date in our 121 years of organ-building. In an interesting way, this instrument both reviews that history and looks forward to the next century. Its design draws upon the great traditions of Romantic organ-building, which had taken hold at the time of our company’s founding, and incorporates them into a modern framework with the resources necessary for a multifaceted, contemporary church music program. The design is based on the conviction that the organ can and should have the same kind of expressiveness as the symphony orchestra. Given the organ’s many advantages, including pitch and dynamic range, tonal variety, and unlimited sustain, all under the control of one artist, the organ should be able to eclipse the orchestra in accompanimental versatility and musical expression. In fact, it must do so if it is to be the foundation of mainstream church music in the future. Over a period of 25 years, Jack Levick, minister of music and fine arts, has built one of the most respected music programs in the country. In addition to everything expected in a church that serves one of America’s largest Protestant congregations, First-Plymouth has a resident professional brass ensemble of ten players, and sponsors Abend-musik, Lincoln’s premier subscription concert series, which presents both well-known and seldom-heard choral works with organ and orchestra in the tradition of the great oratorio societies, and organ/orchestra solo works, as well as internationally known guest artists. -
