  • Spiritual Ecology: on the Way to Ecological Existentialism
religions Article Spiritual Ecology: On the Way to Ecological Existentialism Sam Mickey Theology and Religious Studies, University of San Francisco, San Francisco, CA 94117, USA; [email protected] Received: 17 September 2020; Accepted: 29 October 2020; Published: 4 November 2020 Abstract: Spiritual ecology is closely related to inquiries into religion and ecology, religion and nature, and religious environmentalism. This article presents considerations of the unique possibilities afforded by the idea of spiritual ecology. On one hand, these possibilities include problematic tendencies in some strands of contemporary spirituality, including anti-intellectualism, a lack of sociopolitical engagement, and complicity in a sense of happiness that is captured by capitalist enclosures and consumerist desires. On the other hand, spiritual ecology promises to involve an existential commitment to solidarity with nonhumans, and it gestures toward ways of knowing and interacting that are more inclusive than what is typically conveyed by the term “religion.” Much work on spiritual ecology is broadly pluralistic, leaving open the question of how to discern the difference between better and worse forms of spiritual ecology. This article affirms that pluralism while also distinguishing between the anti-intellectual, individualistic, and capitalistic possibilities of spiritual ecology from varieties of spiritual ecology that are on the way to what can be described as ecological existentialism or coexistentialism. Keywords: spirituality; existentialism; ecology; animism; pluralism; knowledge 1. Introduction Spiritual ecology, broadly conceived, refers to ways that individuals and communities orient their thinking, feeling, and acting in response to the intersection of religions and spiritualities with ecology, nature, and environmentalism. There are other ways of referring to this topic.

CATECHIST’S NOTES Section Two CATECHIST’S NOTES for Grade 7 Table of Contents CLASS 1: Self-respect: Acknowledging why you are so important CLASS 2: Understanding the changes we experience CLASS 3: Friendship, love, and life CLASS 4: Christ in my home and in my life CLASS 5: Personal Safety Curriculum CATECHIST’S VOCATION — God’s Call NOTES Grade 7 Class 1 Studying what the Lord teaches us about sexuality Introduction General aim of the lesson This class is planned to help the students realize the goodness of our vocation: our call to be Christians, and our call by God Himself to an important life. It could be a call to become a priest or religious, or it could be a divine vocation to enter marriage with a very special person, and have children, and find our way to heaven by doing great things on this earth in ordinary circumstances. The whole idea of vocation is explored here: God’s deep concern for everything in our life, and how we plan our lives — the ways we learn to put all that we are as boys and girls into becoming men and women. Specific objectives 1. To recall the first vocation we have: to be personal friends and followers of Christ, and to shape everything in our lives in ways that are faithful to the Lord. 2. To think about our special vocations: how God cares very much about the life each one of us will live — the kind of life He invites us to and that we decide to live, and all the special circumstances of the life He invites each one of us to have.

  • How We Beat the Great Depression Chapter 1 Finding Paradise on The
How We Beat the Great Depression Chapter 1 Finding Paradise On the southwest corner of the United States there is a place that we called home for thirteen years. Mexico lay to the south, the Pacific Ocean to the west, with the Coronado Islands looming up fourteen miles from shore, and the sleepy little village of Imperial Beach with San Diego and Point Loma in the distance to the north. To the east, San Miguel and the Otay Mountains and the peaks of the Coastal Range made a beautiful, panoramic backdrop to a scene that to me is unforgettable. To the local folk this marshy land was called the "Tiajuana Sloughs" because the Tijuana river, originating in Mexico, ran through the town of Tijuana and across the International Border to the Pacific Ocean. The river flowed when, and if, there was enough rainfall in the mountains during the rainy season. Long after we moved from there, the name of the sloughs was changed to the Tijuana Estuary. A salt works was located there before the big floods in the spring of 1916. Local historians say a fellow by the name of Charles Hatfield caused the flood with his famous rainmaking machine. The city of San Diego hired him to end a long drought, and soon afterward, the rains started to fall. It rained for weeks until almost everything in San Diego was flooded or washed away. By the time we move to the sloughs, the only things left to mark the salt works site were old dikes that bordered the evaporation ponds.

Monologue Overgrown: Revising the world with speech in Franz Kafka, Robert Walser and Thomas Bernhard by Paul Joseph Buchholz This thesis/dissertation document has been electronically approved by the following individuals: Schwarz,Anette (Chairperson) Gilgen,Peter (Minor Member) McBride,Patrizia C. (Minor Member) MONOLOGUE OVERGROWN: REVISING THE WORLD WITH SPEECH IN FRANZ KAFKA, ROBERT WALSER AND THOMAS BERNHARD A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Paul Joseph Buchholz August 2010 © 2010 Paul Joseph Buchholz MONOLOGUE OVERGROWN: REVISING THE WORLD WITH SPEECH IN FRANZ KAFKA, ROBERT WALSER AND THOMAS BERNHARD Paul Joseph Buchholz, Ph. D. Cornell University 2010 My dissertation focuses on unstable, chronically unpublished prose texts by three key 20th century prose writers, quasi-novelistic texts whose material instability indicates a deep discomfort with the establishment of narrative authority qua narrative violence. I argue that Franz Kafka, Robert Walser and Thomas Bernhard, radically refunctionalized the device of interpolated “character monologue,” turning characters' speech from a narrative function, into a site where a text can be rewritten from within. In the Bildungsroman tradition, extended oral interpolations serve as an engine for the expansion and exposition of the plotted work, deepening the epic narrative world and exhaustively presenting a perspective that will be incorporated into biographical trajectory. I locate an estrangement of this practice: moments when oral monologues of fictional interlocutors “overgrow,” becoming an interventionary force that doubles, disrupts and re-frames the narrative discourse out of which it first sprouted. In showing how the labor of ‘world-making’ is split and spread across different competing layers of these texts, my dissertation contributes to the study of the narrative phenomenon of metalepsis.
