Modern Indonesian Literature in Translation I MODERN INDONESIAN LITERATURE IN TRANSLATION I (Compiled by Dede Oetomo) It is a long time since a bibliography has appeared of English translations of modern Indonesian poems, plays, short stories, and novels, and there is currently enough teaching on Indonesia in English-language schools and colleges for us to think that such a bibliography might be helpful. This bibliography, which has been divided into two sections, relies heavily on earlier collections of Indonesian literature in translation, and a list of the principal sources from which these translations have been drawn appears at the beginning of each section. The first part of the bibliography is entirely devoted to the poetry of Chairil Anwar, who is perhaps the Indonesian poet best known among Westerners. Chairil Anwar died in 1949 at the age of twenty-seven and published only about seventy- four poems. Nevertheless, translations of his poetry form about a third (371 titles) of the total number of English translations of Indonesian literary works that have thus far appeared. For ease in comparing the different English ver sions, we have listed the poems alphabetically under their Indonesian titles, with the various translations arranged alphabetically by translator (if his name is known), and the date when the translation appeared. If the English version is accompanied by the original Indonesian poem, the letters BT (Bilingual Text) follow the entry. The forthcoming issue of Indonesia will continue this bibliography, and will include English translations of other Indonesian poets, and of short stories, novels, and the few Indonesian plays that have been translated into English. * * * SOURCES Ali, Flaming Earth Ali, Ahmed, ed ., tr. • Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke
Between G elanggang and Lekra: Pramoedya's Developing Literary Concepts- by Martina Heinschke Introduction During the first decade of the New Order, the idea of the autonomy of art was the unchallenged basis for all art production considered legitimate. The term encompasses two significant assumptions. First, it includes the idea that art and/or its individual categories are recognized within society as independent sub-systems that make their own rules, i.e. that art is not subject to influences exerted by other social sub-systems (politics and religion, for example). Secondly, it entails a complex of aesthetic notions that basically tend to exclude all non-artistic considerations from the aesthetic field and to define art as an activity detached from everyday life. An aesthetics of autonomy can create problems for its adherents, as a review of recent occidental art and literary history makes clear. Artists have attempted to overcome these problems by reasserting social ideals (e.g. as in naturalism) or through revolt, as in the avant-garde movements of the twentieth century which challenged the aesthetic norms of the autonomous work of art in order to relocate aesthetic experience at a pivotal point in relation to individual and social life.* 1 * This article is based on parts of my doctoral thesis, Angkatan 45. Literaturkonzeptionen im gesellschafipolitischen Kontext (Berlin: Reimer, 1993). I thank the editors of Indonesia, especially Benedict Anderson, for helpful comments and suggestions. 1 In German studies of literature, the institutionalization of art as an autonomous field and its aesthetic consequences is discussed mainly by Christa Burger and Peter Burger.

It may be useful to give a short survey of such materials as have come to my notice, even though this survey is of necessity incomplete. First of all it should be mentioned that literary, cultural and scholarly journals and magazines have discovered modern Indonesian literature and regularly or incidentally publish translations of poetry, short stories, essays etc. The well-known journal INDONESIA, issued half-yearly by the Modern Indonesia Project of Cornell University, has published a number of Indonesian stories in English translation, for example Idrus' stories Fujinkai and Och... Och ... Och (vol. 2) and Surabaja (vol. 5), Ajip Rosidi's stories Among the Family (vol. 1) and A Japanese (vol. 6), while Heather Sutherland (vol. 6) and Harry Aveling (vol. 7) con- tributed essays on modern literature. Another magazine which deserves to be mentioned as an interesting effort to make available to a wider audience modern literary and other cultural products from Southeast Asia including Indonesia is TENGGARA (tenggara means Southeast). So far five issues have come out, .the latest one bearing the year 1969. Another volume, containing Southeast Asian plays, has been announced. Several short stories, poems and essays on Indonesian literature have been published so far.

All the more so when the poet in question is one of the creators of a new literary tradition in his country, and his formative years are dominated by events as cataclasmic as the Japanesé conquest of the Dutch East Indies in 1941-42, and the sub- sequent struggle for Indonesian independence. Chairil Anwar was born in Medan in 1922 and died in Djakarta in 1949. His formal education extended only as far as the first two years of Junior High School, after which family difficulties caused him to leave home for Djakarta in 1940 — at the age of 18. Very little is known of his life in Djakarta until the Japanesé occupation, when he became recognised as a poet among the circle of Indonesian intellectuals. Only a modicum of his poetry was published before the Japanesé surrender, but after the war his reputation soared: he was regarded as the creator of a new Indonesian poetry who jealously preserved his artistic integrity during the Japanesé occupation, and after the war was a burning patriot.

  • ASPECTS of INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE in the 1930S
PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1.

The differences between modern and classical Malay are not only of frequency but of function too. Pun is only one particle in the system of Malaysian-Indonesian grammar and one understands that it cannot receive more than a summary treatment in handbooks. But the result is a treatment that is insufficient or even neglectful and often misleading. It transpires that the analysis of the functions and meanings of pun depends largely on the intuition and impressions of the various authors.

CONTEXTUALIZING ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’: PROPOSITIONS OF CRITICAL ARTISTIC PRACTICE IN SENI RUPA KONTEMPORER IN INDONESIA A Dissertation Presented to the Faculty of the Graduate School of Cornell University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Amanda Katherine Rath January 2011 © 2011 Amanda Katherine Rath CONTEXTUALIZING ‘CONTEMPORARY ART’: PROPOSITIONS OF CRITICAL ARTISTIC PRACTICE IN SENI RUPA KONTEMPORER IN INDONESIA, 1973-1994 Amanda Katherine Rath, Ph. D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation contends with the development of seni rupa kontemporer (contemporary art) between 1973 and 1993, with certain case studies extending to the late 1990s. I offer a history and genealogy of concepts of critical artistic practice, examining to what purpose strategies of a contemporary art have been put and from what conditions they emerged. I examine how these have been interpreted to possess criticality in Indonesia. Taking the controversial curatorial essay published for the 9th Jakarta Biennale of Art (1993) as a catalyst rather than as a point of reference, I rethink the possibility and value of a construct of an avant-garde and postmodern in seni rupa kontemporer.I propose a kind of avant-garde without modernism’s tradition of transgressive poetics. The mode of marginality I have in mind is a critical position possible only on this side of the political sea change and depoliticization of the cultural field in Indonesia after 1965. This entails tracing shifting notions of art’s and artistic autonomy, which were largely dependent upon the relation art had with politics and the spheres in which artistic practice was seen to reside.

  • A Study of the Cultural Pages of Harian Rakjat in the Early 1950S
The Communist Imagination: A Study of the Cultural Pages of Harian Rakjat in the Early 1950s Stephen Miller A thesis in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy School of Humanities and Social Sciences, UNSW@ADFA, Canberra, Australia August 2015 2 Acknowledgements This dissertation would not have been possible without the enthusiasm, good humour, intelligence and patience of my primary supervisor, Paul Tickell. I cannot thank him enough for his continuing support and faith. He was well supported by my co-supervisors, Emeritus Professor Barbara Hatley and Dr. Edwin Jurriens. I want to especially thank Barbara for her patience in reading drafts in the final throes of thesis production. Dorothy Meyer saw the project through from the beginning of candidature until submission, providing companionship, coding advice, proof reading, and general editing support. Her enthusiasm and passion for my work were central to the thesis reaching the point of submission. The keen grammar sense of my mother, June Miller, helped improve the readability of many sections of the writing. Dr. Kaz Ross also deserves to be mentioned for a late reading of a complete draft and pushing me to submit. It is great to have good colleagues in your corner. I would also like to thank the administrative staff at UNSW at ADFA, especially Bernadette McDermott, who has always been flexible and helpful when dealing with a candidature that lasted far too long. During the prolonged revision process Rifka Sibarani’s support, enthusiasm, and affection was much appreciated, as it continues to be post-thesis. So many other people have also helped me out at various times—students, colleagues, friends, family, comrades.
