(p. 266) generic article uses are more than twice as common in academic English than in conversation or fiction. This is an area that English for Academic Purpose (EPA) textbooks and teachers would need to target more than general English teaching. This paper is therefore a contribution towards better understanding of what linguistic facts about generics teachers and textbooks of EAP might need to cover in order to deal with them satisfactorily, particularly for learners with Arabic or Malay as L1. This paper is also significant as it is the first to compare the expression of generic meanings by noun phrases in three typologically quite different languages: the Germanic language English, the Semitic language Arabic and the Austronesian language Malay. The contrast between the three languages is substantial in that they have different settings according to the nominal mapping parameter (NMP), which captures some widespread generalizations about the occurrence of mass and countable nouns and articles in the languages of the world. -

PUDJANGGA BARU: ASPECTS OF INDONESIAN INTELLECTUAL LIFE IN THE 1930s Heather Sutherland Pudjangga Baru, the "New Writer," was a cultural periodical put out in the colonial capital of Batavia by a group of young Indonesian intellectuals from 1933 until the invasion of the Netherlands Indies by Japan in 1942.1 In Bahasa Indonesia, the term pudjangga means "literary man, man of letters; author, poet; linguist, philologist."2 34 The choice of this term for the title of the monthly was no doubt also influenced by an awareness of its historical connotations, for the word can be traced back through such Old Javanese forms as bhujanga to an original Sanskrit root associated with sacred and priestly learning. It implied nobility and integrity as well as literary ability; and it is therefore no accident that the writings appearing in it claimed high idealism and a sense of mission. The purpose proclaimed by Pudjangga Baru became more fervent as the years passed. In the beginning, it described itself simply as a literary, artistic, and cultural monthly. At the start of its third year it declared itself a "bearer of a new spirit in literature, art, culture, and general social affairs."^ At the beginning of its fifth year it claimed to be the "leader of the new dynamic spirit to create a new culture, the culture of Indonesian unity."1* In 1928, when the second All-Indonesia Youth Congress swore the famous oath to work for "one fatherland, one people, and one language" Pudjangga Baru pledged itself to work for the development of the national language and also to strive for a national culture, adding "one culture" to its 1. -

Furthermore, this study explored the factors that influence on the mastery of Malay language. The survey method was used to distribute questionnaires among 100 Chinese students. The findings show that Chinese students are still weak in the knowledge of Malay language grammar (N= 1.96; SD= 0.46). This specifies that Chinese students are still incapable of producing good essays and are profoundly influenced by the mother tongue. Their roots are weak in Malay due to their attitude, lack of teaching aids, teachers' attitudes and parental attitudes. Therefore, all parties need to play a role in helping to improve the mastery of the Malay grammar of Chinese students. This helps them not to stay out of the lesson, especially in Malay language subjects. Two Distinct Negation Markers Compete in Malay/Indonesian Verbal Clauses. I Argue That
EXTERNAL NEGATION IN MALAY/INDONESIAN PAUL KROEGER Graduate Institute of Applied Linguistics and SIL International Two distinct negation markers compete in Malay/Indonesian verbal clauses. I argue that one (also used to negate nominal predicates) is a marker of ‘external’ (sentential) negation, while the other is a marker of ‘internal’ (predicate) negation. This contrast is demonstrated by striking dif - ferences in syntactic distribution and scopal properties. In verbal clauses the marker of predicate negation is the default, while the marker of sentential negation is allowed only in certain pragmat - ically determined contexts. These contexts include: (i) contrastive sentences, (ii) marked narrow focus, and (iii) metalinguistic negation. External negation in Malay is restricted to ‘root clauses’; I suggest that this is due to its echoic character.* Keywords : negation, metalinguistic negation, contrastive negation, focus, presupposition, main clause phenomena 1. Negation in verbal clauses . A number of authors, including Gazdar (1979:65–66), Levinson (1983:201), and Horn (1989:366), have stated that no lan - guage, so far as we know, lexicalizes the distinction between external and internal nega - tion. 1 In this article I argue, on the basis of syntactic distribution and semantic scope, that the contrast is lexicalized in Malay/Indonesian. 2 I also present evidence showing that external negation in Malay is a main clause phenomenon in the sense of Green 1976. We begin with a long-standing descriptive puzzle in Malay grammar concerning the choice of negation marker in verbal clauses. Malay employs two different markers for clausal negation. 3 The standard negation marker tidak is used when the predicate is ver - bal (1a) or adjectival (1b), and with most predicative PPs (1c). -

D. Cornell University 2011 This dissertation contends with the development of seni rupa kontemporer (contemporary art) between 1973 and 1993, with certain case studies extending to the late 1990s. I offer a history and genealogy of concepts of critical artistic practice, examining to what purpose strategies of a contemporary art have been put and from what conditions they emerged. I examine how these have been interpreted to possess criticality in Indonesia. Taking the controversial curatorial essay published for the 9th Jakarta Biennale of Art (1993) as a catalyst rather than as a point of reference, I rethink the possibility and value of a construct of an avant-garde and postmodern in seni rupa kontemporer.I propose a kind of avant-garde without modernism’s tradition of transgressive poetics. The mode of marginality I have in mind is a critical position possible only on this side of the political sea change and depoliticization of the cultural field in Indonesia after 1965. This entails tracing shifting notions of art’s and artistic autonomy, which were largely dependent upon the relation art had with politics and the spheres in which artistic practice was seen to reside. -
