This was discussed at a meeting of specialists on North African politics held in the Institute. In view of the continuing importance of developments in Algeria the Institute asked Professor Leveau to prepare this revised version of his paper for wider circulation. We are very grateful to Professor Leveau for having prepared this stimulating and enlightening analysis of developments which are also of importance to Algeria's European neighbours. We are also grateful to those who took part in the discussion of earlier drafts of this paper. John Roper Paris, September 1992 - v - Algeria: adversaries in search of uncertain compromises Rémy Leveau INTRODUCTION The perception of Islamic movements has been marked in Europe since 1979 by images of the Iranian revolution: hostages in the American Embassy, support for international terrorism, incidents at the mosque in Mecca and the Salman Rushdie affair. The dominant rhetoric of the FIS (Islamic Salvation Front) in Algeria, which has since 1989 presented a similar image of rejection of internal state order and of the international system, strengthens the feeling of an identity of aims and of a bloc of hostile attitudes. -
Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State
Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State By Neil Grant Landers A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in French in the GRADUATE DIVISION of the UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA, BERKELEY Committee in charge: Professor Debarati Sanyal, Co-Chair Professor Soraya Tlatli, Co-Chair Professor Karl Britto Professor Stefania Pandolfo Fall 2013 1 Abstract of the Dissertation Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State by Neil Grant Landers Doctor of Philosophy in French Literature University of California, Berkeley Professor Debarati Sanyal, Co-Chair Professor Soraya Tlatli, Co-Chair Representing the Algerian Civil War: Literature, History, and the State addresses the way the Algerian civil war has been portrayed in 1990s novelistic literature. In the words of one literary critic, "The Algerian war has been, in a sense, one big murder mystery."1 This may be true, but literary accounts portray the "mystery" of the civil war—and propose to solve it—in sharply divergent ways. The primary aim of this study is to examine how three of the most celebrated 1990s novels depict—organize, analyze, interpret, and "solve"—the civil war. I analyze and interpret these novels—by Assia Djebar, Yasmina Khadra, and Boualem Sansal—through a deep contextualization, both in terms of Algerian history and in the novels' contemporary setting. This is particularly important in this case, since the civil war is so contested, and is poorly understood. Using the novels' thematic content as a cue for deeper understanding, I engage through them and with them a number of elements crucial to understanding the civil war: Algeria's troubled nationalist legacy; its stagnant one-party regime; a fear, distrust, and poor understanding of the Islamist movement and the insurgency that erupted in 1992; and the unending, horrifically bloody violence that piled on throughout the 1990s. -

Article / Artículo / Artigo An Ethnomusicological Approach to Orientalism: The Musical and Historical Study of the Moors and Christians in Villena (Spain) Luis Gimenez Amoros, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article examines the historical and musical forms of Orientalism found in the festival popularly known as Moros y cristianos (the Moors and Christians) in Spain and, in particular, the town of Villena in the province of Alicante. Since the 12th century, this traditional festival is mostly celebrated in towns along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain which includes Villena. The contextualization of this festival through Orientalism provides an understanding of the exoticization of Muslim-Spanish music through the música festera (the music composed for Moros y cristianos), a musical style with more than four thousand pieces composed by more than three hundred Spanish composers over the course of the last two centuries. This article reveals by conducting ethnomusicological studies using Orientalism, there is a possibility of reconsidering the colonial narrative embedded in the cultural and musical symbolism of música festera. -

Orhan Kolog˘Lu RENEGADES and the CASE ULUÇ/KILIÇ ALI ·
Orhan Kolog˘lu RENEGADES AND THE CASE · ULUÇ/KILIÇ ALI In the history of the Mediterranean region, the Renegade of the Christians who becomes a Mühtedi by joining the Muslim religion, has played an important role. In European languages the Renegade is the person who abandons Christianity for a different faith. The Mühtedi, on the other hand, according to Muslim and Turkish communities, is the person of another faith who embraces Islam. Since Islam began to spread 600 years after Christianity, it gathered its early followers among pagans, a few Jews but especially Christians. Its rapid spread over Syria, Egypt, North Africa, Sicily, Spain and into central France indicates that all Mediterranean communities were largely affected by the religion. Christianity, which had become the domineering and ruling faith through Papacy and the Byzantine Empire, was now lar- gely disturbed by this competitor. For this reason, it was only natural that both sides scrutinized the Renegade/Mühtedi very closely. The concern of one side in losing a believer matched the concern of the other side in preventing the loss of the Mühtedi, who is then called a Mürted (apostate, the verb is irtidad). European research on this subject outweighs the research done by Muslims, because renegades had not only been, quantitative-wise, many times more than mürteds, but also they played more important roles as history-makers in the Mediterranean. Muslim indifference to their past is easily understandable because the interest was focused only on their activities as Muslims. However, European research bears the mark of the Christian perspective and has a reactionary approach. -
A Modest Rejoinder from a Historian Peter Jones
Special Issue — Edited by I. Pardo and G. B. Prato Urbanities, Vol. 9 · Supplement 2 · April 2019 On Legitimacy: Multidisciplinary Reflections © 2019 Urbanities A Modest Rejoinder from a Historian Peter Jones (University of Leicester, U.K.) [email protected] It is a pleasure to participate in this debate on legitimacy. I cannot match the range of learning and scholarship that has gone into the fascinating work edited by Italo Pardo and Giuliana B. Prato (2019); and, therefore, I have concentrated on Giuliana Prato’s illuminating chapter ‘On the Legitimacy of Democratic Representation: Two case studies from Europe’ (2019), which takes a ‘turning point’ in European history: the post-1989 collapse of the Soviet Union and its client state empire in Eastern Europe. The collapse represented a crisis of legitimacy not only of the Soviet Empire as a political entity but also a crisis for the revolutionary ideology of Marxism and the various Communist Parties of Western Europe and, especially, in Italy. We are probably familiar with Francis Fukuyama’s, The End of History and the Last Man (1992) which suggested that the fall of the Berlin Wall marked a final stage in the evolution of liberal democracy and the ‘end point of mankind’s [sic] ideological evolution’ (see also Fukuyama (1989). Such optimism now seems hollow as even Western European states struggle to eliminate corruption and electorates have in some states turned to populist-nationalist political programmes. In this sense, however, Giuliana Prato’s fieldwork illustrates that the processes of change are more complex and drawn-out than the political headlines of the journalist and even sometimes of historians and political scientists. -

Les morts algériens de l’implacable conquête de l’Algérie2 ont été évalués entre 250 000 et 400 000, voire plus3.
