In the words of one literary critic, "The Algerian war has been, in a sense, one big murder mystery."1 This may be true, but literary accounts portray the "mystery" of the civil war—and propose to solve it—in sharply divergent ways. The primary aim of this study is to examine how three of the most celebrated 1990s novels depict—organize, analyze, interpret, and "solve"—the civil war. I analyze and interpret these novels—by Assia Djebar, Yasmina Khadra, and Boualem Sansal—through a deep contextualization, both in terms of Algerian history and in the novels' contemporary setting. This is particularly important in this case, since the civil war is so contested, and is poorly understood. Using the novels' thematic content as a cue for deeper understanding, I engage through them and with them a number of elements crucial to understanding the civil war: Algeria's troubled nationalist legacy; its stagnant one-party regime; a fear, distrust, and poor understanding of the Islamist movement and the insurgency that erupted in 1992; and the unending, horrifically bloody violence that piled on throughout the 1990s. Alternating close readings with deep contextualization, I examine how the novels conceptualize the civil war within Algerian history, then propose a reading of the novels themselves by drawing out their positions in relation to each other and to the civil war. After a general presentation in the first chapter, Chapter 2 offers a reading of Boualem Sansal's Le serment des barbares, a novel that presents the larger themes of the dissertation: the distortion of public memory; the difficulty in narrating the civil war; the mythification of history; and the role of the state in contributing to violence in Algerian society. Chapter 3 follows the paths proposed in Sansal's novel by considering the novel's claim that the popular understanding of the war of independence is largely a myth, and that insidious but important episodes of that struggle were deleted from history. Chapter 4 examines the treatment of the civil war in Yasmina Khadra's Les agneaux du Seigneur, an enormous commercial success that frames the civil war as 1 Adam Shatz, London Review of Books, 2004. 2 a noir genre fiction of terror and crime in a village outside Algiers. Chapter 5 examines the discourse used to discuss the civil war, and focuses specifically on the rhetoric of state discourse. Chapter 6 reviews the basic political context of the civil war and what is known about the violence itself. Chapter 7 examines the role of political Islam in Algeria, since this is a crucial element of the civil war and its treatment in the novels. Chapter 8 considers the civil war in the depiction of Assia Djebar's Le blanc de l'Algérie and synthesizes the dissertation's major themes. i Contents Note on Translations     Transculturality in Algiers: The Cinema of Merzak Allouache Joseph McGonagle Thanks to its rich and diverse history, the city of Algiers is undoubtedly a privileged site of transculturality. This was certainly the case in the French colonial period when, as Zeynep Çelik argues, colonial Algeria was the most important but most problematic of the French overseas territories and constituted “the colonial city par excellence, the terrain of many battles— cultural, political, military, urban, architectural.”1 Furthermore, as Martin Evans and John Phillips point out: “French rule in Algeria lasted for 132 years, as opposed to 75 years in Tunisia and 44 in Morocco, a depth and duration of colonial experience unique within the Arab world.”2 As a consequence, France “remains an omnipresent feature of Algeria,” and the complexity of its historical legacy helps ensure that Algeria is “the most francophone of France’s former territories.”3 Crucially, the Bay of Algiers forms a major economic maritime hub. As Tom Trevor has asserted regarding port cities more broadly, such spaces provide “symbolic sites of cultural exchange. They are the points of entry and departure, the mouth of an imagined body of the nation-state, where the foreign gets muddled up with the familiar and land-locked certainty is blurred by maritime exchange.”4 Given that Algiers is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Trevor’s argument pertains all the more, as the profound cultural and linguistic diversity of this geographical space “encourages a reshuffling of the usual cards of national belonging and unilateral framing.”5 As the capital city and seat of state power, Algiers has played a pivotal role in the formation of Algeria as a nation and the development of Algerian cultural identity.

He died in the United States, from leukaemia, on 6 December 1961. He was thirty-six years old. At thirty-six he had been a protagonist in two wars, a political militant in the Caribbean, Europe and North Africa, a playwright, a practicing psychiatrist, the author of numerous articles in scientific journals, a teacher, a diplomat, a journalist, the editor of an anti-colonial newspaper, the author of three books, and a major Pan-Africanist and internationalist. Like Ernesto “Che” Guevara – another revolutionary who valued the poetic and was a committed internationalist, doctor, soldier, teacher, and theorist – Fanon’s life was marked by a permanent, courageous, and militant motion into the present, and into the specificity of the situations in which he found himself. Fanon’s thought carries, in Ato Sekyi-Otu’s memorable phrase, an ‘irrepressible … openness to the universal’. In the realm of the political, as in the poetic, the truest route into the universal has always been through an intense engagement with the particular in its concrete manifestations in space and time: this piece of land occupied in the interstices of this city, these women rebuilding in the ruins of the last attack, the plastic burning in this brazier as the night wears on, these men stepping out of the shadows with these guns.

    Mexico’s Forgotten Dirty War: Guerrero’s Student, Worker, and Campesino Activism Alejandro Guardado On December 3, 1974, two hundred students in the state of Guerrero, Mexico, protested against state and federal police, demanding the death of their state senator Rubén Figueroa. On the previous day, Figueroa had been rescued by the government after being kidnapped by Marxist guerrillas and held for ransom. In this process, the police shot and killed Lucio Cabañas, the guerrilla leader who held Figueroa hostage. Cabañas was labeled a domestic terrorist and bandit by the Mexican state, and was referred to as Mexico’s most iconic guerrilla by the CIA. Students at the Universidad Autónoma de Guerrero resisted and attacked political figures like Figueroa by producing images that included phrases such as, “Muera Figueroa ” (Die Figueroa) and “ Figueroa es traidor ” (Figueroa is a traitor). 1 Such demonstrations reveal the hostile relationship between Guerrero students and politicians as the youth pledged allegiance to this local guerrilla leader. These activists protested and sought vengeance against their state’s established political leaders and police forces. To university students and professors, as well as other sectors of Guerrero’s society, Cabañas’ death felt like a personal loss and direct attack. This student action demonstrates a disconnect from local and federal government, as students clearly rejected the legitimacy of political figures. Through their protest, students identified themselves as noncombatants associated with Guerrero’s insurgent movement during the Dirty War. While Americans remember the Cold War era for the ever- looming threat of nuclear annihilation, many Mexicans faced the threat of an internal Dirty War from their government.

He and his group of mostly male disciples, prompted by the horrors of World War I, searched for fresh formulas for depicting the bizarre and inhumane events of the era and for reviving the arts in Europe, notably by experimenting with innovative practices which included probing the unconscious mind. Women, if they had a role, were viewed as muses or performed only ancillary responsibilities in the movement. Their participation was usually in the graphic arts rather than in literature. However, in later generations, francophone women writers such as Joyce Mansour and Suzanne Césaire began to develop Surrealist strategies for enacting their own subjectivity and promoting their political agendas. Aside from casual mention, no critic has formally investigated the surreal practices of this sizeable company of francophone women authors. I examine the literary production of seven women from three geographic regions in order to document the enduring capacity of surrealist practice to express human experience in the postcolonial and postmodern era.
