Abstract: Although the majority of terrestrial carnivorous plants grow in acidic soils at a pH of 3.5-5.5, there are many dozens of carnivorous species, mostly mountainous or rocky Pinguicula species, which grow preferen- tially or strictly in neutral or slightly alkaline soils at pHs between 7-8. Knowledge of an optimum soil pH value and an amplitude of this factor may be important not only for understanding the ecology of various species and their conservation, but also for successfully growing them. I report soil pH values at microsites of 15 terrestrial carnivorous plant species or subspecies in SW Europe. Introduction The majority of terrestrial carnivorous plants grow in wetlands such as peat bogs, fens, wet meadows, or wet clayish sands. The soils have usually low available mineral nutrient content (N, P, K, Ca, Mg), are hypoxic or anoxic and usually acidic (Juniper et al. 1989; Adamec 1997; Rice 2006). Unlike mineral nutritional character- istics of these soils, which have commonly been studied and related to carnivorous plant growth in the field or greenhouse experiments and which have also been published (for the review see Adamec 1997), relatively very little is known about the relationship between soil pH and growth of terrestrial carnivorous plants. The influence of substrate lithology on the distribution of many vascular and nonvascular plants has long been recognized, especially in alpine, subalpine, and other rocky habitats. In particular, plants have been classified as dependent on high-calcium substrates (i.e., calcicoles) based on common restriction to habitats developed in calcareous rocks, such as limestone and marble. In a classic 1907 paper on the influence of substrate on plants, M. L. Fernald singled out a particular meadow on Mont de la Table in the Chic-Choc Mountains of Que´bec for its unusual co-occurrence of strict calcicole and calcifuge (i.e., acidophile) plant taxa. We re-located this site, investigated substrate factors responsible for its unusual plant diversity, and documented current plant distributions. No calcareous rocks were found on site. However, inclusions of calcareous rocks were found farther up the mountain. The highest pH and dissolved calcium concentrations in surface waters were found in a series of springs that deliver groundwater, presumably influenced by calcareous rocks up the slope. Within the habitat delineated by common occurrences of calcicole species, available soil calcium varied by a factor of five and soil pH varied by almost 1.5 units, depending on microtopography and relative connection with groundwater.

Two ultramafic sites in western Ireland 11 were studied: grassland at Dawros, County Galway and grassy heath near the base of 12 Croagh Patrick, County Mayo. Rock and soil chemistry was examined along with foliar 13 nutrients (at Dawros only). Ellenberg reaction values of all plant species recorded were 14 determined. Two bioassays were conducted to determine relative differences in fertility 15 between ultramafic and adjacent non-ultramafic soils and to assess nutrient limitation in the 16 Croagh Patrick soil. Both soils showed many of the chemical characteristics typical of 17 other ultramafic sites including a moderately high nickel concentration; in general, soil 18 metal concentrations were higher in Dawros soils. However, nitrogen, phosphorus and 19 calcium (with a calcium:magnesium ratio c. 0.6) were all at high concentrations at Dawros 20 leading to a fertile grassland with both calcicole and calcifuge species present spanning six 21 Ellenberg reaction values.

It is true that its flora offers less variety than that of England, and still less than that of equal Continental areas. But this comparative paucity of species is richly compensated by the occurrence, often over a wide range, of plants of high interest and often of great beauty, whose analogues in England or Scotland are few and of very restricted distribution, while in the parts of Europe next adjoining they are almost all unknown. These peculiar features are due mainly to the position of Ireland on the extreme western edge of the Old World, a fact which in itself, for the student of European or Eurasian geography or botany, gives to this country a special interest. Again, the extraordinary diversity of rocks in Ireland produces a corresponding variety of land- forms, with repercussions on the character of the flora and fauna. Geological diversity increases as one passes across Europe from east to west, from the interior of the great land-mass to its unstable oceanic edge. In Russia, areas far larger than Ireland are built up of a single type of rock, stretching featureless from horizon to horizon. Within the fretted coast-line of Ireland, almost every sedimentary rock which has gone to building up the crust of the Earth is represented, from Archtean to Neolithic, as well as many of igneous origin. The Irish mountains are exceeded in elevation by the loftiest summits in Wales and in Scotland, but they offer within a smaller area an equal variety of rock and consequently of scenery.
