What are Pronouns? A pronoun is a word that replaces a noun in a sentence. Pronouns are used to avoid repeating the same nouns over and over again. For example : 1. He studies hard to pass the exam. 2. She tried it herself. Types of Pronouns 1. Personal Pronoun 2. Emphatic Pronoun 3. Reflexive Pronoun 4. Demonstrative Pronoun 5. Distributive Pronoun 6. Relative Pronoun 7. Possessive Pronoun 8. Interrogative Pronoun 9. Indefinite Pronoun 10.Reciprocal Pronoun Personal Pronoun Personal pronouns are used as a substitute for a person's name. There are two kinds: subjective and objective pronouns. That is, they either act as the subject of the sentence or the object of the sentence. For example: As the subject of the sentence, they are : 1. I don't want to leave. 2. They went to the store. As the object of the sentence, they are : 1. Go talk to her. 2. Don't look at them. Emphatic Pronoun Emphatic pronouns is a personal pronoun. We use it to explain the action done by the noun without anyone’s help. For example: 1. I made tea myself 2. They themselves have to be blamed. Reflexive Pronoun Reflexive pronouns are used when the action done by the subject reflects on the subjects. For example: 1. I made some tea for myself. 2. They were blaming themselves for the defeat. Demonstrative Pronoun Demonstrative pronouns are used to point out the object or objects they indicate. For example: 1. This is a beautiful vase. 2. That was a good joke. Distributive Pronoun Distributive pronouns refer to persons or things one at a time and are always singular. For example: 1. Either of you can come with me. 2. Neither of the boys is tired. Relative Pronoun Relative Pronouns are used to add information about a noun already mentioned and also help in joining to statements together. For example: 1. I don't know which pair of shoes you want. 2. No, not that one. Possessive Pronoun Possessive pronouns are those pronoun that indicate possession or relationship. For example: 1. This house is hers. 2. We shall finally have what is rightfully ours. Interrogative Pronoun Interrogative pronouns are used for asking questions. For example: 1. What is your name? 2. Who got this packet? Indefinite Pronoun Indefinite pronouns stand for some nouns implied or understood. For example: 1. No one came to the auditorium. 2. All were waiting for the announcement. Reciprocal Pronoun Reciprocal pronouns referred to an action occurring in one direction and also back in the opposite direction. For example: 1. They play with each other. 2. The children looked at one another when surprise gifts were given. GAME 1 Rules of the game Each student is required to identify the type of the pronoun in the following sentence.
