  • SUMMARY Fresh Look Milwaukie: Downtown Road
SUMMARY Fresh Look Milwaukie: Downtown Road Map Survey Results April 8 – May 1, 2013 Introduction: From April to May of 2013, ALIGN planning collaborated with the City of Milwaukie to draft a survey to gather quantitative and qualitative data to complement findings from other community engagement activities. The project team received 134 survey responses; this document is a summary of all those responses. This survey was a community engagement effort for the Fresh Look Milwaukie: Downtown Road Map (“Fresh Look Milwaukie”) project, and was intended to engage Milwaukie community members both within and outside of the downtown area. The results of the survey provide a basis for determining whether the current plans for downtown align with the community values and desires. The Fresh Look Milwaukie project is part of a larger effort – the City of Milwaukie’s Commercial Core Enhancement Program (CCEP). During the first phase of the CCEP, the Fresh Look Milwaukie project aims to review the policies and regulations that shape development and uses in Downtown Milwaukie. This survey was designed with five main sections that address four key project questions: • How does Downtown Milwaukie sustain its livelihood beyond events (i.e. Farmers Market)? • How do people feel about transportation and the pedestrian network in Downtown Milwaukie? • What components make up a vibrant Downtown? What do people love about Downtown? • What would people change about Downtown? How can this be realized? Limitations of this Survey: Responses collected are opinions and should not be interpreted as factual information, outside of the context for understanding the concerns and desires of the Milwaukie Community.

WEST SIDE STORY Based on a conception of Jerome Robbins Book by Music by Lyrics by Arthur Leonard Stephen Laurents Bernstein Sondheim Choreography by Jerome Robbins Rehearsal Script As of October 21, 2008 I.1.1 ACT I SCENE 1 The neighborhood. A suggestion of city streets and alleyways; a ghetto under a highway.. The opening is a musical: half-danced, half-mimed with occasional phrases of dialogue. It is stopped by a POLICE WHISTLE louder and louder and the arrival of a mean, sly cop -- KRUPKE -- and a plainclothesman -- SCHRANK - with a superficially pleasant manner,. KRUPKE Knock it off! Settle down. SCHRANK All right: kill each other. But not on my beat. RIFF Why if it isn’t Lt. Schrank! SEVERAL JETS Top of the day, Officer Krupke. Etc. SCHRANK Pitiful what you Puerto Ricans have done to this neighborhood. Which one of ‘em clobbered ya, A-rab? (A-RAB looks to RIFF) RIFF As a matter of factuality, sir, we suspicion the job was done by a cop. BIG DEAL Two cops. A-RAB Oh, at least! I.1.2 SCHRANK Didn’t nobody ever tell you there’s a difference between bein’ a stool pigeon and cooperatin’ with the law? RIFF You told us the difference, sir. And we all chipped in for a prize for the first guy who can figure it out. ACTION (Indicating SCHRANK) Maybe buddy boy should get the prize. SCHRANK Don’t buddy boy me, Action! I got a hot surprise for you: you hoodlums don’t own the streets. There’s been too much raiding between you and the PRs.

If advertising asks questions to compel us to consume more products, what might Kruger’s work compel us to think about? 3. What is the definition of a “truism”? 4. Jenny Holzer once said, “I used language because I wanted to offer content that people—not necessarily art people—could understand.” Many of Jenny Holzer’s public works use language resembling the style of commercial signs on the street and on the internet. How does Holzer’s style compare and contrast to Kruger’s? 5. Have you ever borrowed text from another piece of writing, such as a song, a poem, or a reference book, to place in a work of art? If so, how did you incorporate it? 6.

UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Representations of Transnational Violence: Children in Contemporary Latin American Film, Literature, and Drawings A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures by Cheri Marie Robinson 2017 © Copyright by Cheri Marie Robinson 2017 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Representations of Transnational Violence: Children in Contemporary Latin American Film, Literature, and Drawings by Cheri Marie Robinson Doctor of Philosophy in Hispanic Languages and Literatures University of California, Los Angeles, 2017 Professor Adriana J. Bergero, Chair In this study, I examine representational strategies revolving around extreme violence and child/adolescent protagonists in films, literature, children’s drawings, and legal/political discourses in contemporary Latin American culture from an interdisciplinary approach. I analyze the mobilizing potential and uses of representations of child protagonists affected by violence and the cultures of impunity that facilitate its circulation. Within the works selected, I explore ways in which children can become sites of memory and justice through acts of witnessing, empathy, and the universal claim of natural law, with a primary focus on transnational and multidirectional depictions of violence (i.e. a violence in circulation) in extra-juridical, politicized, or aberrant environments in Latin American works. The historical periods contextualizing this study include the Argentine military dictatorship (1976-1983) and its interconnectedness to the violence of WWII and the Holocaust in Reina Roffé’s “La noche en blanco” (Chapter 1), the impact of ii transnational trajectories of genocidal violence in Argentine South Patagonia in 1959-1960 as depicted by Lucía Puenzo’s novel Wakolda (Chapter 2), Argentina’s transition to democracy (1990s) and the critical questions it raised regarding appropriated children and amnesty/justice in Dir.

Jubilee of the Heart: How Monastic Song Became Mystical Poetics By Kris Jonathan Trujillo A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Rhetoric and the Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in charge: Professor Amy Hollywood, Co-Chair Professor Daniel Boyarin, Co-Chair Professor Niklaus Largier Professor James Porter Fall 2017 Abstract Jubilee of the Heart: How Monastic Song Became Mystical Poetics by Kris Jonathan Trujillo Doctor of Philosophy in Rhetoric Designated Emphasis in Critical Theory University of California, Berkeley Professor Amy Hollywood, Co-Chair Professor Daniel Boyarin, Co-Chair This dissertation describes how the proliferation of “song” as a trope in the vernacular poetic tradition that Michel de Certeau calls “mystic poetics” arises out of the monastic practice of singing the Psalms. Through close readings of John Cassian, Bernard of Clairvaux, Hadewijch, and John of the Cross, it reveals that the ethical formation of the “mystic-poet” is as much a product of theological devotion as it is an attempt to craft a figure of literary exemplarity in the vernacular. Against the characterization of mystical poetry as spontaneous, immediate, and singular, this project argues that mystical poetry and the contemplative life to which it is bound are not removed from the world, but rather firmly grounded in the ritual, embodied, and communal practices of devotion that shape monastic and semi-monastic life. Ultimately, I propose a genealogy of mystical poetics that is not opposed to, but indeed contiguous with the repetitive and ritual reading practiced in Christian monasteries.
