An exclusive Hits interview with David Berman, President of Capitol Records by lain Blair

avid Berman, President of Capitol Records, has been active in the music business since 1970. A native of Chicago, and an alumnus of the University of Michigan's Business School and Harvard Law School, D he first cut his teeth with Mitchell, Silberberg and Knupp in the prestigious law firm's music division. After being made apartner in 1975, he became VP, Business Affairs at Warner Bros. Records the following year, and for the next 11 years, developed his music business philosophies that merged good business practices with akeen appreciation of artistic talent. In 1983, he was appointed Senior VP, and for the next three years, War- ners experienced the most successful period in the company's history. When the dust settled from the big shake-down at Capitol last year, it was no surprise to find that Berman had been chosen from alist of top executives to head up Capitol Industries -EMI, Inc., in February. By August, Ber- man finally landed the job as President of Capitol, aposition for which he is more than abundantly qualified. Since then, he has helped push through various strategic changes, including adecentralization process which brought financial, legal, video and production divisions under one label umbrella. He has also stressed the roles of A&R and promotion. Normally areticent man, at least when it comes to the press, Berman, who is famous for his "no comment" comments, naturally couldn't resist an opportunity to talk to Hits.

The first thing Idid was hire Simon Potts, so my focus from day one was going to be A&R.

Since then you've built up a whole new, young A&R staff, as well as promotion and black music teams.

Ifeel we've now got absolutely top-notch people here, like John Fagot and Step Johnson— they're major additions to the company, and part of that new focus.
