In a conference, the presenter may select what kind of speech genre that they want to start a from of written or spoken language, for example conversation script, journal, essays, speech, etc. Each speech genre has five characteristic areas: structure, style, content or subject matters, conception of audience, and range of purpose. One of the interesting speech acts presented in a conference is delivered by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (in this research then called as AHY). The researcher choose the AHY speech in this study because the figure of AHY was a figure of a young man who had high leadership prospects, his words would have more impact, besides that he also held the control of quite large parties and extraordinary military figures. , then he is also quite fluent in English. in previous research many have been carried out by several researchers, who examined the speeches of President Barac Obama and the inaugural Barac Obama by (Rohmawati, 2016). while for non-english speakers it was done to Xi Jinping's speech by (su, 2016) using Appraisal theory. Beberapa Tahun Belakangan, Konstelasi Politik DKI Jakarta Memanas. Tahun 2007 Merupakan Tahun Dimulainya Pemilihan Gubernur

Populasi Volume 24 Nomor 2 2016 Halaman 23-36 MIGRATION, ETHNICITY AND LOCAL POLITICS: THE CASE OF JAKARTA, INDONESIA Aulia Hadi and Riwanto Tirtosudarmo Research Center for Society and Culture, Indonesian Institute of Sciences Correspondence: Aulia Hadi (email: [email protected]) Abstract As the capital city of a country with the world’s fourth largest population, Jakarta, like many other big cities in the developing economies, for example, Mexico City or New Delhi, hosts migrants from all regions of the country. Without a doubt, Jakarta has increasingly become the major core of the agglomeration processes transforming it and its satellite cities into a Mega Urban Region (MUR). This paper traces historically the interactions between migration, ethnicities and local politics in Jakarta from the 1960s to the 2000s focusing on the latest development, in which the phenomenon ‘Ahok’, the nickname of Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, a Chinese-Christian from the small district of Belitung, has become an increasingly popular Governor of Jakarta. The paper argues that through the recent developments in Jakarta the politics have apparently been transformed into more civic, rather than ethnic politics. The nature of Jakarta as a proliferating migrant city transcends narrow cultural identities as well as conventional party politics into a more active citizenry through the widespread use of social media. Keywords: migration, ethnicity, local politics, new media Introduction had already started in the 17th century. The Two-Face of Anies Baswedan: the Inconsistency with Regards to Jakarta Reclamation
Journal of Language and Literature ISSN: 1410-5691 (print); 2580-5878 (online) Jean Antunes Rudolf Zico Ma’u The Two-Face of Anies Baswedan: The Inconsistency with Regards to Jakarta Reclamation Jean Antunes Rudolf Zico Ma’u [email protected] Graduate Program in English Language Studies, Universitas Sanata Dharma, INDONESIA Abstract Homo homini lupus and the end justifies the means are two general adagios that have been applied in the political contestation. The main idea behind the two adagios is that one should benefit any means necessary at all cost in order to execute the vested political agenda. Such practice is almost found in any domain of political practice, especially in the general election for governor. One of the good examples that describes the case best is the governor election of DKI-1. During this election, one of the candidates, namely Anies Baswedan, has successfully manipulated the environmental issues, namely Jakarta Reclamation, into one of his political weapons by promising that he shall cease Jakarta Reclamation if he has been officially elected as the Governor of Jakarta Special Capitol. Indeed, he has won the election and thus he has kept his commitment by sealing the 932 buildings from Island D. However, several moments later he issued the building permit for a number of buildings in one of the reclamation islands and ever since then people, especially his supporters, have started questioning his commitment toward the cessation of Jakarta Reclamation. Departing from the case, the researcher is encouraged to conduct a study that might disclose the true characteristics of a political figure. -

RAJARATNAM SCHOOL OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES SINGAPORE 21 NOVEMBER 2019 Abstract This paper examines the Prosperous and Justice Party (PKS)’s strategy in the 2019 Indonesian general elections. Among the Islamic-based political parties, PKS gained the most significant increase in votes. We aspire to understand the breakthrough by looking at the party’s strategy. On the one hand, our findings confirm the existing studies that correctly noted the moving of Indonesian political parties towards a “catch-all” direction by which they aim to garner wider support beyond a specific type of voter base. On the other hand, our research notes that PKS has started to exploit the phenomenon of rising Islamic conservatism in Indonesia. Despite solely maintaining an inclusive electoral strategy, this research asserts that the party has adjusted its campaign strategy to fit in with the trend of rising Islamic conservatism while concurrently exploiting the anti-incumbent president (Joko Widodo) sentiment. This paper aims to enhance discussion on Indonesian politics as well as Indonesia’s political parties, particularly the PKS. -

Based on ethnographic research on Islamist buzzers – social media political operators tasked with making particular online conversation subjects trend – in Indonesia, this article details the process of how the proliferation of insensitive message in both the online and offline realms plays a role in mobilizing those sympathetic to religious fundamental- ism. As this research shows, the interviewed buzzers were one of the driving forces behind the massive success of the fundamentalist Islamic Defenders Front (Front Pembela Islam, FPI) as they mobilized people to participate in the organization’s political rallies between 2016 and 2017.
