Externalities and the Common Owner (job talk, forthcoming) The paper examines recent shareholder activism seeking emissions reduction and climate risk disclosure from portfolio firms. It argues that institutional investors have incentives to impose voluntary regulation, contrary to traditional conceptions of shareholder profit maximizing norms, because they have portfolios diversified across the entire economy.
