Managed by Caltech for NASA, Caltech and JPL scientists and engineers work together on missions that focus on planetary exploration, Earth science, and space-based astronomy. JPL currently has 19 spacecraft and 10 major instruments on active missions, including the Mars Science Laboratory, which made history when its rover, Curiosity, landed on Mars in August 2012, and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR), which studies the universe with high-energy X-rays to better understand phenomena like black holes and exploding stars. Keck comprises two buildings—the existing Tolman/ Bacher House, which recently underwent extensive renovation, and an entirely new structure that houses an auditorium dubbed the “Think and Do Tank.” Responsible Stewardship In 2008, Caltech implemented a series of programs to reduce energy consumption, water use, greenhouse gas emissions, and waste production.
