REQUEST FOR SABBATICAL LEAVE. I am requesting a 100% sabbatical leave for the 2019-2020 academic year. Employed as a fulltime faculty member at Cerritos College since August 2005, I have never requested sabbatical leave during the past thirteen years of service. II. PURPOSE OF LEAVE Scientific advancements and technological capabilities, most notably within the last few decades, have evolved at ever-accelerating rates. Artists, like everyone else, now live in a contemporary world completely restructured by recent phenomena such as satellite imagery, augmented reality, digital surveillance, mass extinctions, artificial intelligence, prosthetic limbs, climate change, big data, genetic modification, drone warfare, biometrics, computer viruses, and social media (and that’s by no means meant to be an all-inclusive list). -

CHAN Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong S.A.R., China Abstract: Icons, which take the form of images, artifacts, landmarks, or fictional figures, represent mounds of meaning stuck in the collective unconsciousness of different communities. Icons are shortcuts to values, identity or feelings that their users collectively share and treasure. Through the concrete identification and analysis of icons of post-war Hong Kong, this paper attempts to highlight not only Hong Kong people’s changing collective needs and mental or material hunger, but also their continuous search for identity. Introduction: Telling Hong Kong’s Story through Icons It seems easy to tell the story of post-war Hong Kong. If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia. -

On Nov. 1-3 from 9-11 pm (check local listings), PBS will premiere Rx for Survival − A Global Health Challenge™, a six-part documentary series narrated by Brad Pitt. Peterson with research assistance from Paul White Version 1, June 2010 Safe laboratory practices are an important element in the responsible conduct of research. They protect scientists, research assistants, laboratory technicians, and others from hazards that can arise during experimentation. The particular hazards that might arise vary according to the type of experimentation: the explosions or toxic gases that could result from chemical experiments are prevented or contained by different kinds of measures then are used to limit the health hazards posed by working with radioactive isotopes. In most areas, scientists are allowed – and even encouraged – to decide for themselves what experiments to undertake and how to construct and run their labs. In 1970, there were three main exceptions, and they applied more to questions of how to carry out research than to selecting topics for research: use of radioactive materials, use of tumor-causing viruses, and use of human subjects. In these areas, levels of risk to persons inside and outside the lab were perceived as great enough to justify having the government, either through the regular bureaucracy or through scientific agencies, set and enforce mandatory safety standards. When genetics was poised at the threshold of recombinant DNA research and genetic manipulation techniques in the 1960s, the hazards such work might pose to lab personnel or to others were unknown. Many scientists and others believed they were likely to be significant. The primary concern in public discussion was whether hybrid organisms bred from recombinant DNA would cause new diseases or create varieties of plants or animals that would overwhelm and irretrievably change the natural environment. -

REDFIELD ENRY BRYANT BIGELOW was an accomplished systematic zool- H ogist, being a recognized authority on both the coelenter- ates and fishes. His 1911 paper on the siphonophores was considered to be the most useful report on this group that had ever been written. In recognition of his later work on the fishes of the western North Atlantic he was awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal by the National Academy of Sciences in 1948. Of wider impact on the development of marine science was his recognition of the interdependence of the physics, chem- istry, and biology of the sea, as exemplified by his studies of the Gulf of Maine and his part in the creation of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, of which he was the first director. Seventy-five years ago, when Alexander Agassiz visited the Maldive Islands with Henry Bigelow as his assistant, oceanog- raphy in America was an interest promoted from time to time through individual initiative and, when in line with their pri- mary duties, by appropriate governmental agencies. Today it is a fully recognized division of science, complete with standard textbooks and special journals. -

The 33 “written” on the Schmidt Telescope dome using a green laser pointer during the two-minute exposure commemorates the rescue effort of 33 miners trapped for 69 days almost 700 m underground in the San Jose mine in northern Chile. The image was taken while the rescue was in progress on 13 October 2010, at 3:30 am Chilean Daylight Saving time. Miley2,3,6 Received 1990 June 21 ; accepted 1990 August 29 ABSTRACT We present and discuss the results of a program of deep optical imaging of 19 high-redshift (z > 2) radio- loud QSOs. These data represent the first large body of nonradio detections of spatially resolved structure surrounding high-redshift QSOs. _1 In 15 of 18 cases, the Lya emission is spatially resolved, with a typical size of 100 kpc (for H0 = 75 km s 1 44 _1 Mpc“ ; q0 = 0). The luminosity of the resolved Lya is «10 ergs s («10% of the total Lya luminosity). The nebulae are usually asymmetric and/or elongated with a morphological axis that aligns with the radio source axis to better than « 30°. These properties are quite similar to those of the Lya nebulae associated with high-z radio galaxies. The brighter side of the nebula is generally on the same side as the brighter radio emis- sion and/or one-sided, jetlike radio structure. There is no strong correlation between the Lya isophotal and radio sizes (the Lya nebulae range from several times larger than the radio source to several times smaller). None of the properties of the nebulae correlate with the presence or strength of C iv “associated” absorption C^abs ^ ^em)* It is likely that the nebulae are the interstellar or circumgalactic medium of young or even protogalaxies being photoionized by QSO radiation that escapes anisotropically along the radio axis.
