Today, as we celebrate the University of California, Irvine’s 56th commencement, enjoy the pride, nostalgia, and excitement of the moment . As you participate in these time-honored graduation rites, which although performed remotely have not lost any of their meaning or importance, I encourage you to remember that you did not achieve this success alone or in a vacuum . Like many other things in this pandemic time, this year’s IMS Presidential Address will be also somewhat different from those in the 10 IMS Awards past. Besides being virtual, it will be also given jointly by the IMS Past President Susan 11 IMS London meeting; Olga Murphy and myself. The pandemic prevented Susan from giving her IMS Presidential Taussky-Todd Lecture; Address last year. CHAN Hong Kong Baptist University, Hong Kong S.A.R., China Abstract: Icons, which take the form of images, artifacts, landmarks, or fictional figures, represent mounds of meaning stuck in the collective unconsciousness of different communities. Icons are shortcuts to values, identity or feelings that their users collectively share and treasure. Through the concrete identification and analysis of icons of post-war Hong Kong, this paper attempts to highlight not only Hong Kong people’s changing collective needs and mental or material hunger, but also their continuous search for identity. Introduction: Telling Hong Kong’s Story through Icons It seems easy to tell the story of post-war Hong Kong. If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia.

For example, the Chinese paintings of the Song Dynasty combined painting with the art of poetry, and some Western Baroque paintings worked with the music played in churches to aid in worship (Yee 122; Gardner 651). But the first works of art to ever merge the three art forms of music, poetry, and painting, was the Ragamala paintings of India. Ragamala painting is quite a unique form of art in that it successfully combines these three art forms. This paper will describe many facets of Ragamala painting, and describe a specific example of Ragamala painting, in what one could call an onion of art. This is because, just as an onion has layer upon layer, art too has many different layers. The layers around a work of art include the artwork itself, its uses, any symbolism in the artwork, the role of the artist, and the background or any traditions that the artwork follows. It also includes cultural and religious contexts as well as social, political, economical, and historical contexts.

Supported by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the TIME Summit will convene leaders in medicine, government, business, public policy and the arts to develop actions and solutions to health crises. TIME is partnering with PBS, as well as ABC News, to reach a broad audience. On Monday, October 31, a TIME special issue on global health will hit newsstands, reaching more than 27 million readers around the world. On Nov. 1-3 from 9-11 pm (check local listings), PBS will premiere Rx for Survival − A Global Health Challenge™, a six-part documentary series narrated by Brad Pitt. The series is co-produced by the WGBH/NOVA Science Unit and Vulcan Productions. Also this fall, ABC News will provide expanded coverage of global health issues. The TIME Summit will be on-the-record and open to credentialed media for news coverage. “The developed nations of the world can no longer ignore the health crisis faced by millions of people every day,” said Jim Kelly, managing editor of TIME magazine. “And the challenges presented by Hurricane Katrina bring home these daunting struggles.

ZeroN is a new interaction element that can be levitated and moved freely by computer in the mid-air space to represent 3D information. Users are invited to place and move the ZeroN just as they can place objects on surfaces. They can place the sun above physical models to cast digital shadows, place a planet that will start revolving based on programmed conditions, or play 3D tangible pong.     Tiny ASTERIA satellite achieves a first for CubeSats 16 August 2018, by Lauren Hinkel And Mary Knapp The ASTERIA project is a collaboration between MIT and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California, funded through JPL's Phaeton Program. The project started in 2010 as an undergraduate class project in 16.83/12.43 (Space Systems Engineering), involving a technology demonstration of astrophysical measurements using a Cubesat, with a primary goal of training early-career engineers. The Silver Standard as a Discipline on Money Over-Issuances: The Mechanism of Paper Money in Yuan China Abstract: The Yuan was the first dynasty both in Chinese and world history to use paper money as its sole medium of circulation, and also established the earliest silver standard. This paper explores the impact of paper money in Yuan China. We find that: (1) At the beginning of its regime, due to the strict constraints of the silver standard on money issuances, the value of paper money was stable. (2) Since the middle stage of the dynasty, the central government had to finance fiscal deficits by issuing more paper money, and inflation was thus unavoidable. Our empirical results also demonstrate that fiscal pressure from multiple provincial rebellions was the most important factor driving the government to issue more paper money; however, the emperor’s largesse, which had been viewed as another source of fiscal deficits by most traditional historians, had no significant effect on the over-issuance of paper money. (3) When the monetary standard switched from silver to paper money, the impact of fiscal deficits, which were driving more paper money issuances, became much more severe.
