Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 Jonathan Wroot PhD Thesis Submitted to the University of East Anglia For the qualification of PhD in Film Studies 2013 1 Making Markets for Japanese Cinema: A Study of Distribution Practices for Japanese Films on DVD in the UK from 2008 to 2010 2 Acknowledgements Thanks needed to be expressed to a number of people over the last three years – and I apologise if I forget anyone here. First of all, thank you to Rayna Denison and Keith Johnston for agreeing to oversee this research – which required reining in my enthusiasm as much as attempting to tease it out of me and turn it into coherent writing. Thanks to Mark Jancovich, who helped me get started with the PhD at UEA. A big thank you also to Andrew Kirkham and Adam Torel for doing what they do at 4Digital Asia, Third Window, and their other ventures – if they did not do it, this thesis would not exist. Also, a big thank you to my numerous other friends and family – whose support was invaluable, despite the distance between most of them and Norwich. And finally, the biggest thank you of all goes to Christina, for constantly being there with her support and encouragement. 3 Abstract The thesis will examine how DVD distribution can affect Japanese film dissemination in the UK. The media discourse concerning 4Digital Asia and Third Window proposes that this is the principal factor influencing their films’ presence in the UK from 2008 to 2010.

  • Exploring Aspects of Korean Traditional Music in Young Jo Lee's
EXPLORING ASPECTS OF KOREAN TRADITIONAL MUSIC IN YOUNG JO LEE’S PIANO HONZA NORI Jin Kim, B.M., M.M. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS August 2013 APPROVED: Adam Wodnicki, Major Professor Elvia Puccinelli, Committee Member Joseph Banowetz, Committee Member Steven Harlos, Chair of the Division of Keyboard Studies John Murphy, Interim Director of Graduate Studies in the College of Music James C. Scott, Dean of the College of Music Mark Wardell, Dean of the Toulouse Graduate School Kim, Jin. Exploring Aspects of Korean Traditional Music in Young Jo Lee’s Piano Honza Nori. Doctor of Musical Arts (Performance), August 2013, 29 pp., 4 tables, 9 figures, 13 musical examples, bibliography, 32 titles. Since the 1960s, several gifted Korean composers, including perhaps most notably Young Jo Lee (b. 1943), have been internationally acclaimed for their work. In Western countries, however, there has been a scarcity of academic studies examining the artistry of the music of these Korean composers. Nonetheless, as one of today’s most recognized composers in Korea, Young Jo Lee has been invited to numerous international concerts, conferences, and festivals where his works have been played and discussed. A salient feature of his compositions is the fusion of Korean traditional music and the elements of Western compositions, such as in, for one distinctive example, his piano composition, Piano Honza Nori. This musical study describes and analyzes how Lee integrates Korean traditional elements with Western musical ideas in Piano Honza Nori. Results of this study will contribute to the limited literature on the analysis of contemporary piano composition that integrates Korean traditional elements.

People Power: The Everyday Politics of Democratic Resistance in Burma and the Philippines Nicholas Henry A thesis submitted to the Victoria University of Wellington in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in International Relations Victoria University of Wellington 2011 ii ... the tale he had to tell could not be one of a final victory. It could be only the record of what had had to be done, and what assuredly would have to be done again in the never ending fight against terror and its relentless onslaughts, despite their personal afflictions, by all who, while unable to be saints but refusing to bow down to pestilences, strive their utmost to be healers. Albert Camus, The Plague This thesis is dedicated to all those who, resisting the terror of state violence, continue to do what has to be done. iii Abstract How do Community Based Organisations (CBOs) in Burma and the Philippines participate in the construction of political legitimacy through their engagement in local and international politics? What can this tell us about the agency of non-state actors in international relations? This thesis explores the practices of non-state actors engaged in political resistance in Burma and the Philippines. The everyday dynamics of political legitimacy are examined in relation to popular consent, political violence, and the influence of international actors and norms. The empirical research in this thesis is based on a grounded theory analysis of in-depth semi-structured interviews with a wide cross-section of spokespeople and activists of opposition groups from Burma, and with spokespeople of opposition groups in the Philippines.

For twenty years, he worked quietly and effectively as a teacher and principal in Sauges, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France. At his beatification, Pope Pius XII stressed that Benilde’s sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and by “doing common things in an uncommon way.” As a young Brother, I remember listening to historian Br. Clair Battersby, FSC talk to us about St. Benilde. “There’s nothing to say” was repeated several times throughout his talk. Benilde had lived an ordinary life, but approached it with extraordinary faith and zeal. Over the years, Christian Brothers High School has been blessed with many teachers who have endured the “daily grind” of preparing classwork, correcting homework, papers and tests, coaching athletes, directing plays and concerts, accompanying students on field trips, and spending extra hours leading a variety of co-curricular activities.

The Silver Standard as a Discipline on Money Over-Issuances: The Mechanism of Paper Money in Yuan China Hanhui Guan (School of Economics, Peking University, Beijing, 100871, China; [email protected]) Jie Mao (School of International Trade and Economics, University of International Business and Economics, Beijing, 100029, China; [email protected]) Corresponding with the author: Hanhui Guan. School of Economics, Peking University, No. 5 Yiheyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100871, P. R. China. Email: [email protected]. Phone (office): +86-10-62753493. The Silver Standard as a Discipline on Money Over-Issuances: The Mechanism of Paper Money in Yuan China Abstract: The Yuan was the first dynasty both in Chinese and world history to use paper money as its sole medium of circulation, and also established the earliest silver standard. This paper explores the impact of paper money in Yuan China. We find that: (1) At the beginning of its regime, due to the strict constraints of the silver standard on money issuances, the value of paper money was stable. (2) Since the middle stage of the dynasty, the central government had to finance fiscal deficits by issuing more paper money, and inflation was thus unavoidable. Our empirical results also demonstrate that fiscal pressure from multiple provincial rebellions was the most important factor driving the government to issue more paper money; however, the emperor’s largesse, which had been viewed as another source of fiscal deficits by most traditional historians, had no significant effect on the over-issuance of paper money. (3) When the monetary standard switched from silver to paper money, the impact of fiscal deficits, which were driving more paper money issuances, became much more severe.
