For twenty years, he worked quietly and effectively as a teacher and principal in Sauges, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France. At his beatification, Pope Pius XII stressed that Benilde’s sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and by “doing common things in an uncommon way.” As a young Brother, I remember listening to historian Br. Clair Battersby, FSC talk to us about St. Benilde. “There’s nothing to say” was repeated several times throughout his talk. Benilde had lived an ordinary life, but approached it with extraordinary faith and zeal. Over the years, Christian Brothers High School has been blessed with many teachers who have endured the “daily grind” of preparing classwork, correcting homework, papers and tests, coaching athletes, directing plays and concerts, accompanying students on field trips, and spending extra hours leading a variety of co-curricular activities. Like St. Benilde, the teachers did “common things in an uncommon way”. I never tire of listening to an alum who shares stories about the teacher who went that extra mile for him, the teacher who helped develop a A LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT skill in a certain area, or the counselor who worked diligently to help him choose the right college. Your generosity and support enable these teachers to approach each day not as the “daily grind” but as an opportunity to walk with their students “in the holy presence of God.” St. John Baptist De LaSalle tells us that “God has chosen you to do His work.” What a responsibility! What an honor! My heartfelt appreciation goes out to each person listed in the Annual Report. Your support of the Lasallian mission is leading us to the 150th celebration of the school in 2021! There will be plenty to say and to celebrate! Know of my thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Live Jesus in our hearts!
