  • Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood
Katherine Kinney Cold Wars: Black Soldiers in Liberal Hollywood n 1982 Louis Gossett, Jr was awarded the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Gunnery Sergeant Foley in An Officer and a Gentleman, becoming theI first African American actor to win an Oscar since Sidney Poitier. In 1989, Denzel Washington became the second to win, again in a supporting role, for Glory. It is perhaps more than coincidental that both award winning roles were soldiers. At once assimilationist and militant, the black soldier apparently escapes the Hollywood history Donald Bogle has named, “Coons, Toms, Bucks, and Mammies” or the more recent litany of cops and criminals. From the liberal consensus of WWII, to the ideological ruptures of Vietnam, and the reconstruction of the image of the military in the Reagan-Bush era, the black soldier has assumed an increasingly prominent role, ironically maintaining Hollywood’s liberal credentials and its preeminence in producing a national mythos. This largely static evolution can be traced from landmark films of WWII and post-War liberal Hollywood: Bataan (1943) and Home of the Brave (1949), through the career of actor James Edwards in the 1950’s, and to the more politically contested Vietnam War films of the 1980’s. Since WWII, the black soldier has held a crucial, but little noted, position in the battles over Hollywood representations of African American men.1 The soldier’s role is conspicuous in the way it places African American men explicitly within a nationalist and a nationaliz- ing context: U.S. history and Hollywood’s narrative of assimilation, the combat film.

  • Hate Crime Report 031008
HATE CRIMES IN THE OSCE REGION -INCIDENTS AND RESPONSES ANNUAL REPORT FOR 2007 Warsaw, October 2008 Foreword In 2007, violent manifestations of intolerance continued to take place across the OSCE region. Such acts, although targeting individuals, affected entire communities and instilled fear among victims and members of their communities. The destabilizing effect of hate crimes and the potential for such crimes and incidents to threaten the security of individuals and societal cohesion – by giving rise to wider-scale conflict and violence – was acknowledged in the decision on tolerance and non-discrimination adopted by the OSCE Ministerial Council in Madrid in November 2007.1 The development of this report is based on the task the Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (ODIHR) received “to serve as a collection point for information and statistics on hate crimes and relevant legislation provided by participating States and to make this information publicly available through … its report on Challenges and Responses to Hate-Motivated Incidents in the OSCE Region”.2 A comprehensive consultation process with governments and civil society takes place during the drafting of the report. In February 2008, ODIHR issued a first call to the nominated national points of contact on combating hate crime, to civil society, and to OSCE institutions and field operations to submit information for this report. The requested information included updates on legislative developments, data on hate crimes and incidents, as well as practical initiatives for combating hate crime. I am pleased to note that the national points of contact provided ODIHR with information and updates on a more systematic basis.

University of Nottingham PhD Thesis Modularity in Artificial Neural Networks Student: Supervisor: Mohammed Amer Dr. Tomás Maul Co-Supervisor: Dr. Iman Yi Liao Faculty of Science and Engineering School of Computer Science June, 2021 Acknowledgements I am indebted to Dr. Tomás for his endless support on the professional and the personal levels during the long PhD journey. I was really lucky to have the opportunity to be his student and to work under his supervision. I would also like to thank my co-supervisor, Dr. Iman, for her valuable advice and feedback during my PhD. I wish to show my gratitude to all my colleagues, especially Moataz, Ijaz, Khoa and Tuong. It was really a privilege to be around you. No words can really express how indebted I am to my father, mother and brother for always being there for me. Their endless caring is the reason I am writing these words right now. I can not express how much I am blessed to have Asmaa, my wife, beside me during the rough and the good times. Without her support, I could not have made it this far. Special mention to my little daughters, Malika and Farida, who were my shining stars during this journey. I dedicate this to Hamid Abdullatif, my grandfather. Publications and Grants • Amer, M., Maul, T. A review of modularization techniques in artificial neural networks. For twenty years, he worked quietly and effectively as a teacher and principal in Sauges, an isolated village on a barren plateau in southern France. At his beatification, Pope Pius XII stressed that Benilde’s sanctification was attained by enduring “the terrible daily grind” and by “doing common things in an uncommon way.” As a young Brother, I remember listening to historian Br. Clair Battersby, FSC talk to us about St. Benilde. “There’s nothing to say” was repeated several times throughout his talk. Benilde had lived an ordinary life, but approached it with extraordinary faith and zeal. Over the years, Christian Brothers High School has been blessed with many teachers who have endured the “daily grind” of preparing classwork, correcting homework, papers and tests, coaching athletes, directing plays and concerts, accompanying students on field trips, and spending extra hours leading a variety of co-curricular activities.

GIVE BACK HOME CHRISTIAN BROTHERS HIGH SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT July 1, 2016 • June 30, 2017 1 FROM THE PRESIDENT 2 GIVE BACK HOME - CAMPAIGN FOR CBHS 3 GIFT ACTIVITY SUMMARY OFFICE OF INSTITUTIONAL DEVELOPMENT 4 2017–2018 BOARD MEMBERS 5 ANNUAL FUND GOAL 6 ANNUAL FUND TIMELINE 7 ANNUAL FUND SUMMARY, HISTORY 8 ANNUAL FUND - PARENTS 9 ANNUAL FUND - ALUMNI 10 ALUMNI PARTICIPATION 18 PARENT PARTICIPATION 21 CBHS COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION 25 HONOR ROLL OF GIVING 38 LEGACY SOCIETY 40 ENDOWMENTS 43 ENDOWMENT CONTRIBUTORS 44 CAPITAL CAMPAIGN GIVERS 46 MATCHING GIFTS GIFTS IN KIND 47 DESIGNATED GIFTS 50 CONSECUTIVE GIVING 55 HONORARIUMS AND MEMORIALS 64 EVENT SPONSORS Dear Friends, The sidewalk in front of the school is part of the original construction of the Walnut Grove Road campus from 1965. Over the years, it is slowly chipping away as a result of cars parking against it, weather, and the normal student traffic heading in and out of the buildings. For 15 years, I have annually found an excuse not to replace it. Parking lot resurfacing, renovations, and upcoming construction have been the reasons to not waste money on a “short-term” project. With the launch of our Give Back Home Campaign for Christian Brothers High School, we look to position CBHS and the Brothers to serve Memphis, deliver on our Lasallian mission and to remain a leader in a competitive private school landscape for years to come. This campaign is providing for academic programs and resources, new and updated facilities and resources to be shared by current and future students. With the completion of the first and silent phase of our Give Back Home Campaign, we saw the renovation to Heffernan Hall and our Brothers Residence, the construction of McEniry Hall to serve our STEMM program, and the capstone of the first phase in the Brothers Development Center that provides a first-class facility for our student- athletes.
