ABSTRACT This thesis explores the ways in which the industrialist Matthew Boulton (1728-1809) used images of his manufactory and of himself to help develop what would now be considered a ‘brand’. The argument draws heavily on archival research into the commissioning process, authorship and reception of these depictions. Such information is rarely available when studying prints and allows consideration of these images in a new light but also contributes to a wider debate on British eighteenth-century print culture. The first chapter argues that Boulton used images to convey messages about the output of his businesses, to draw together a diverse range of products and associate them with one site. Chapter two explores the setting of the manufactory and the surrounding estate, outlining Boulton’s motivation for creating the parkland and considering the ways in which it was depicted. -

Introduction The Whitworth has been making art useful since 1889. The gallery was originally founded with the wealth of Stockport-born engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth (1803-87). He transformed engineering through the introduction of a standardised system of measurement for machine parts. Whitworth left no formal instructions about how the bulk of his fortune (equivalent to more than £130 million today) should be used after his death. This decision was left to his widow Lady Mary Louisa and his good friends and fellow philanthropists Robert Darbishire and Richard Copley Christie. For the very first time examples of Joseph Whitworth’s world-changing mechanical innovations are on display amongst highlights from the gallery’s diverse collections of textiles, fine art and wallpaper. Whitworth’s commitment to standardisation is used throughout the exhibition as a counterpoint to significant moments of deviation within the gallery’s collection and history. This exhibition explores the establishment of the Whitworth. The founding intention to create a forward-thinking art and design collection is interrogated and its difficult histories exposed. Gender, labour, race and class inequalities are just some of the issues being confronted. This has informed our conversations about the history of the gallery and its collections and we continue to actively engage in this work. Art and Industry William Morris described the exhibits inside the Great Exhibition of 1851 as ‘wonderfully ugly’. For Morris and the art critic John Ruskin, this celebration of global arts highlighted how mass production had led to a separation between English workers and making. Both men were prominent in the Arts and Crafts movement, which aimed to promote hand-making over mass production and advocate the decorative arts. -

Knick Harley Department of Economics and St. Antony’s College University of Oxford Oxford OX2 6JF UK <[email protected]> Abstract Cotton textile firms led the development of machinery-based industrialization in the Industrial Revolution. This paper presents price and profits data extracted from the accounting records of three cotton firms between the 1770s and the 1820s. The course of prices and profits in cotton textiles illumine the nature of the economic processes at work. Some historians have seen the Industrial Revolution as a Schumpeterian process in which discontinuous technological change created large profits for innovators and succeeding decades were characterized by slow diffusion. Technological secrecy and imperfect capital markets limited expansion of use of the new technology and output expanded as profits were reinvested until eventually the new technology dominated. The evidence here supports a more equilibrium view which the industry expanded rapidly and prices fell in response to technological change. Price and profit evidence indicates that expansion of the industry had led to dramatic price declines by the 1780s and there is no evidence of super profits thereafter. Phone: +36(96)-503-454, fax: +36(96)-613-595 e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Thermodynamics as a wide branch of physics had a long historical development from the ancient times to the 20th century. The invention of the thermometer was the first important step that made possible to formulate the first precise speculations on heat. There were no exact theories about the nature of heat for a long time and even the majority of the scientific world in the 18th and the early 19th century viewed heat as a substance and the representatives of the Kinetic Theory were rejected and stayed in the background. The Caloric Theory successfully explained plenty of natural phenomena like gas laws and heat transfer and it was impossible to refute it until the 1850s when the Principle of Conservation of Energy was introduced (Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz). The Second Law of Thermodynamics was discovered soon after that explanation of the tendency of thermodynamic processes and the heat loss of useful heat. The Kinetic Theory of Gases motivated the scientists to introduce the concept of entropy that was a basis to formulate the laws of thermodynamics in a perfect mathematical form and founded a new branch of physics called statistical thermodynamics. The Third Law of Thermodynamics was discovered in the beginning of the 20th century after introducing the concept of thermodynamic potentials and the absolute temperature scale. -

In the 1790s he acted as an agent and engineer for them in Manchester, in much the same way that John Rennie did in London. Ewart later pursued several business ventures in Manchester and Liverpool, mainly in textiles, for which he purchased several engines. He also continued to act as an unofficial agent, liaising with customers on Boulton Watt & Co.’s behalf and passing information to Soho about the state of various firms in the North West. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: SERIES ONE: The Boulton and Watt Archive, Parts 2 and 3 Publisher's Note - Part - 3 Over 3500 drawings covering some 272 separate engines are brought together in this section devoted to original manuscript plans and diagrams. Watt’s original engine was a single-acting device for producing a reciprocating stroke. It had an efficiency four times that of the atmospheric engine and was used extensively for pumping water at reservoirs, by brine works, breweries, distilleries, and in the metal mines of Cornwall. To begin with it played a relatively small part in the coal industry. In the iron industry these early engines were used to raise water to turn the great wheels which operated the bellows, forge hammers, and rolling mills. Even at this first stage of development it had important effects on output. However, Watt was extremely keen to make improvements on his initial invention. His mind had long been busy with the idea of converting the to and fro action into a rotary movement, capable of turning machinery and this was made possible by a number of devices, including the 'sun-and-planet', a patent for which was taken out in 1781. In the following year came the double-acting, rotative engine, in 1784 the parallel motion engine, and in 1788, a device known as the 'governor', which gave the greater regularity and smoothness of working essential in a prime mover for the more delicate and intricate of industrial processes. The introduction of the rotative engine was a momentous event. By 1800 Boulton and Watt had built and put into operation over 500 engines, a large majority being of the 'sun and planet type'. -

From the defeat of General Edward Braddock and the use of flank companies of riflemen in the French and Indian War, to the use of long rifles against Ferguson and the death of General Simon Fraser in the Revolutionary War at Saratoga, to the War of 1812 when British General Robert Ross was shot on the way to take Baltimore in 1814 and when long rifles were instru- mental at New Orleans in January 1815, up to the modern wars with the use of such arms as the Accuracy International AX338 sniper rifle, sharpshooters have been crucial in the outcome of battles and campaigns. I wish to dedicate this discussion to a true American patriot, Chris Kyle, a much decorated Navy Seal sniper whom we lost in February of this year, having earned two silver and four bronze stars in four tours of service to his country. He stated that he killed the enemy to save the lives of his comrades and his only regret was those that he could not save. He also aided his fellow attackers at bay; harassing target officers and artillerymen disabled veterans for whom he worked tirelessly with his from a long-range; instilling psychological fear and feelings Heroes Project after returning home. -

W. Bebbington Professor of History, University of Stirling The catalogue that follows contains biographical data on the Unitarians who sat in the House of Commons during the nineteenth century. The main list, which includes ninety-seven MPs, is the body of evidence on which the paper on „Unitarian Members of Parliament in the Nineteenth Century‟ is based. The paper discusses the difficulty of identifying who should be treated as a Unitarian, the criterion chosen being that the individual appears to have been a practising adherent of the denomination at the time of his service in parliament. A supplementary list of supposed Unitarian MPs, which follows the main list, includes those who have sometimes been identified as Unitarians but who by this criterion were not and some who may have been affiliated to the denomination but who were probably not. The borderline is less sharp than might be wished, and, when further research has been done, a few in each list may need to be transferred to the other. Each entry contains information in roughly the same order. After the name appear the dates of birth and death and the period as an MP. Then a paragraph contains general biographical details drawn from the sources indicated at the end of the entry. A further paragraph discusses religious affiliation and activities. Unattributed quotations with dates are from Dod’s Parliamentary Companion, as presented in Who’s Who of British Members of Parliament.
