1 ‘Work in Progress in Romanticism’ Literature Compass Editing Humphry Davy’s Letters Tim Fulford, Andrew Lacey, Sharon Ruston An editorial team of Tim Fulford (De Montfort University) and Sharon Ruston (Lancaster University) (co-editors), and Jan Golinski (University of New Hampshire), Frank James (the Royal Institution of Great Britain), and David Knight1 (Durham University) (advisory editors) are currently preparing The Collected Letters of Sir Humphry Davy: a four-volume edition of the c. 1200 surviving letters of Davy (1778-1829) and his immediate circle, for publication with Oxford University Press, in both print and electronic forms, in 2020. Davy was one of the most significant and famous figures in the scientific and literary culture of early nineteenth-century Britain, Europe, and America. Davy’s scientific accomplishments were varied and numerous, including conducting pioneering research into the physiological effects of nitrous oxide (laughing gas); isolating potassium, calcium, and several other metals; inventing a miners’ safety lamp (the bicentenary of which was celebrated in 2015); developing the electrochemical protection of the copper sheeting of Royal Navy vessels; conserving the Herculaneum papyri; writing an influential text on agricultural chemistry; and seeking to improve the quality of optical glass. But Davy’s endeavours were not merely limited to science: he was also a poet, and moved in the same literary circles as Lord Byron, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Robert Southey, and William Wordsworth. Since his death, Davy has rarely been out of the public mind. He is still the frequent subject of biographies (by, 1 David Knight died in 2018. Modeling of an alkaline electrolyzer and a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) is presented. Also, a parametric study is performed for both components in order to determine the effect of variable operating conditions on their performance. The aim of this study is to determine the optimum operating conditions when the electrolyzer and the PEMFC are coupled together as part of a residential solar powered stand-alone power system comprising photovoltaic (PV) arrays, an alkaline electrolyzer, storage tanks, a secondary battery, and a PEMFC. The optimum conditions are determined based on an economic study which is performed to determine the cost of electricity (COE) produced from this system so as to determine the lowest possible COE. All of the calculations are performed using a computer code developed by using MATLAB. The code is designed so that any user can easily change the data concerning the location of the system or the working parameters of any of the system’s components to estimate the performance of a modified system. -

Conventionally, the industrial electrolyzers normally produce around 70 % efficiency. This low efficiency is due to high power dissipation in electrolysis process. In an ideal water electrolysis, the cell voltage is equal to the minimum reversible voltage which is 1.23 V for chemical reaction to take place in electrolysis process. However, this cell voltage is much higher in industrial electrolysis cells. This excess voltage is caused by the over voltage potential which increases the electrical impedance of an electrolysis cell causing a fraction of the applied energy to be wasted as heat while allowing the electric current passes through it. This paper aims to study the effect of temperature towards the I-U curve, over-voltage potentials, hydrogen flow rate and energy efficiency of an advanced alkaline electrolyzer. The simulation model is carried out at five different temperature levels varying between 20⁰ C and 100⁰ C. All related equations to the electrochemical reaction are modelled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink. The results have shown that the temperature does not have an effect on the hydrogen flow rate but instead have a significant effect on the I-U curve, over voltage potentials and energy efficiency. -

ENERG. vol. 24, no. 2, August 2011, 221-242 Modelling and Simulation of a Simple Homopolar Motor of Faraday's Type Dedicated to Professor Slavoljub Aleksic´ on the occasion of his 60th birthday Hartmut Brauer, Marek Ziolkowski, Konstantin Porzig, and Hannes Toepfer Abstract: During the application of simulation tools of computational electromag- netics it is sometimes difficult to decide whether the problems can be solved by the computation of electromagnetic fields or circuit simulation tools have to be applied ad- ditionally. The paper describes a typical situation in an electromagnetic CAD course, not only for beginners. The modelling and numerical simulation of a simple homopo- lar motor, similar to that what has been presented by Michael Faraday in 1821 firstly, was used as an example. To simulate the current flow in the permanent magnet the FEM software codes COMSOL Multiphysics including the integrated SPICE module and MAXWELL have been used. The correct simulation of the entire electric circuit as well as the precise modelling of the impressed current and of the electrode contacts turned out to be very important. These include the field region (i.e., near-field or far-field), polarization, radiation pattern, radiation efficiency, system throughput, etc. Accordingly, during an antenna’s design process, different characteristics and characterization methods have to be taken into account. The present thesis focuses on two different aspects of antenna characterization and design: The first concerns antennas in near-field ap- plications dealing with lossy materials. The second is on the Over-The-Air (OTA) measurements of wireless devices and the Random-Line-Of-Sight (Random-LOS) environment. The characterization, design criteria, and fundamental limitations of antennas in the near-field, especially in lossy media, have not been addressed as thoroughly as in the far-field. -

Knick Harley Department of Economics and St. Antony’s College University of Oxford Oxford OX2 6JF UK <[email protected]> Abstract Cotton textile firms led the development of machinery-based industrialization in the Industrial Revolution. This paper presents price and profits data extracted from the accounting records of three cotton firms between the 1770s and the 1820s. The course of prices and profits in cotton textiles illumine the nature of the economic processes at work. Some historians have seen the Industrial Revolution as a Schumpeterian process in which discontinuous technological change created large profits for innovators and succeeding decades were characterized by slow diffusion. Technological secrecy and imperfect capital markets limited expansion of use of the new technology and output expanded as profits were reinvested until eventually the new technology dominated. The evidence here supports a more equilibrium view which the industry expanded rapidly and prices fell in response to technological change. Price and profit evidence indicates that expansion of the industry had led to dramatic price declines by the 1780s and there is no evidence of super profits thereafter.
