From the beginning, the tension between academic objectives and economic viability shaped the often precarious existence of this line of communication between practitioners. His earliest known extended series of experiments were in chemistry and heat, specifically on arsenic and on specific and latent heats. This was around 1764,2 twelve years after he had left the university and four years after he had been elected to the Royal Society. His first publication came two years later, on the chemistry of air, when he was thirty-five; this was rather late for a scientific researcher to begin, but in this as in other ways he was not typical. Never in a hurry to bring his work before the world, he was concerned to perfect it before communicating it.

    THE 19th CENTURY GERMAN DIARY OF A NEW JERSEY GEOLOGIST BY WILLIAM J. CHUTE WILLIAM J. CHUTE, formerly an Instructor in History at Rutgers, is now a member of the history faculty at Queens Collegey New York. N THE FALL of 1852 a young New Jersey scientist William Kitchell, 25 years of age, embarked for Germany in the fashion I of the day to acquire the advanced training which would pre- pare him for his position as professor of geology at the Newark Wesleyan Institute. He was accompanied by a friend, William H. Bradley, and upon arrival both matriculated at the Royal Saxon Mining Academy at Freiburg near Dresden. Sporadically during the next year and a half, Kitchell jotted down his impressions of a multitude of things in a diary—now in the possession of the Rutgers University Library. While his descriptive powers were limited and his style of writing would have received no prize for polish, the diary is informative and entertaining—the personal sketches of world famous men of science, the prevalence of soldiers in Berlin, the hor- rible climate, the slowness of transportation, his questioning of the authenticity of the Genesis story of the great flood are as interesting as the comical and persistent match-making innuendoes of his land- lady and the undisguised matrimonial suggestions of her unblushing daughter. Anecdotes of his American friends who later achieved re- nown are a welcome contribution to the biographer. Kitchell's own claim to fame was won as the director of the New Jersey Geological Survey begun in 1854.

The episode involves the processing of data captured as part of an extensive project by the then (British) Astronomer Royal, Maskelyne, in the mid 1770s, to measure the gravitational attraction and density of the earth. This experiment was conducted on the isolated mountain of Schiehallion in Central Scotland, and resulted in several differing approaches to calculating the mass of the mountain, and determining and interpreting the resultant effect on gravity measurements on its slopes. In order to do this, an accurate determination of “the figure and dimensions of the hill” (Maskelyne, 1775) was required. The survey work was undertaken under Maskelyne’s supervision by his previous assistant, Barrow, and local surveyor, Menzies. The data collected included astronomical observations to establish latitudinal positions, lengths of fixed base lines (one to the north of the mountain and one to the south), a standard traverse around the mountain to establish fixed points, and transects/vertical profiles radiating from those points. The land surveying techniques were known and widely used, although at the time having only been recently documented, in the book ‘A Treatise on Mensuration’.
