On Power Looms: An Account by William Radcliffe 1828 rom the year 1770 to 1788 a complete change had gradually been effected in the spinning of yarns—that of wool had disappeared altogether, and that of linen was also nearly gone. Cotton, cotton, cotton, was become the almost universal Fmaterial for employment. The hand wheels, with the exception of one establishment were all thrown into lumber-rooms, the yarn was all spun on common jennies, the carding for all numbers, up to 40 hanks in the pound, was done on carding engines; but the finer numbers of 60 to 80 were still carded by hand, it being a general opinion at that time that machine-carding would never answer for fine numbers. In weaving no great alteration had taken place during these 18 years, save the introduction of the fly-shuttle, a change in the woollen looms to fustians and calico, and the linen nearly gone, except the few fabrics in which there was a mixture of cotton. To the best of my recollection there was no increase of looms during this period,—but rather a decrease. Although our family and some others in the neighbourhood during the latter half of the time, earned from three to four fold-wages to what the same families had heretofore done, yet, upon the whole, the district was not much benefited by the change; for what was gained by some families who had the advantage of machinery, might, in a great measure, be said to be lost to the others, who had been compelled to throw their old cards and hand-wheels aside as lumber... -

Indeed it can be summarized in one diagram: figure 1.1. Before 1800 income per person – the food, clothing, heat, light, housing, and furnishings available per head - varied across socie- ties and epochs. But there was no upward trend. At the outset, it is important to say that at the moment the site is privately owned and that while Amber Valley Borough Council initiated a Compulsory Purchase Order process in 2015, that process is still at a preliminary stage. This is a preliminary overview, based on the best available, but limited, information. In particular, access to the buildings on site has been limited; while a considerable amount of the North Mill is accessible because it is occupied, access to the East Mill, now empty, was not made available to us. Also, while we have undertaken some stakeholder consultation, we have not at this stage carried out wider consultation or public engagement, nor have we undertaken detailed market research, all of which would be essential to any next stage planning for the future of the site. -

Inventions in the Cotton Industry Paisley Thread Mill Museum A Family of Threads John Kay: The Flying Shuttle 1733 • For centuries handloom weaving had been carried out by the shuttle with the yarn on being passed slowly and awkwardly from one hand to the other. • In 1733 John Kay patented his flying shuttle which dramatically increased the speed of this process. • Kay placed shuttle boxes at each side of the loom connected by a long board, known as a shuttle race. • With cords, a single weaver, using one hand, could knock the shuttle back and forth across the loom from one shuttle box to the other. • A weaver using Kay's flying shuttle could produce much wider cloth at much faster speeds than before. James Hargreaves: The Spinning Jenny 1764 • In 1764 Hargreaves built what became known as the Spinning- Jenny. • The machine used eight spindles onto which the thread was spun. • By turning a single wheel, the operator could now spin eight threads at once. • Later, improvements were made that enabled the number to be increased to eighty. • However, the thread that the machine produced was coarse and lacked strength. Richard Arkwright: The Water Frame 1771 • Richard Arkwright: The Water Frame 1771 • In 1762 Richard Arkwright met John Kay and Thomas Highs, who were trying to produce a new spinning- machine, to improve on the Spinning-Jenny. • Kay and Highs had run out of money and Arkwright offered to employ John Kay to make the new machine, with other, local craftsman to help. • It was not long before the team produced the Spinning-Frame. -

The lot, which was described as an ‘Interesting Collection of mainly 19th Century ephemera relating to the Whitehead, Buckley and Radcliffe families from the Shaw Hall and Shaw Hall Bank areas of Saddleworth’ turned out to have belonged to the Johnson family of Leeds who, though never having resided in the district, had acquired the bulk of the papers through marriage. The collection is a mixture of wills, deeds and other household documents spanning a century and a half and is a useful example of how deeds and papers belonging to a particular property or family can end up in the most unlikely and unrelated places. The earliest documents belonged to the Buckley family of Shaw Hall Bank. Following the sale of the James Farrer’s manorial estate in 1791, the large Shaw Hall Bank farm was bought by John Buckley of Abels (1704-1795) and three of his sons. -

Somewhere in their heritage and upbringing these characteristics were dominant. How I wish they were still alive to enjoy with us the new bits of family history we are finding, for clues they passed along have led to many fascinating discoveries. These two brothers, Ab and Ed as they were called, only children of SE (Ed) and Aubin Fry Clarkson, actually knew a bit more about some of their mother’s family lines. This has led to exciting finds on Fry, Anderson, Bolling, Markham, Cole, Rolfe, Fleming, Champe, Slaughter, Walker, Micou, Hutchins, Brooks, Winthrop, Pintard, and even our honored bloodline to the Princess Pocahontas and her powerful father Powhatan! These families were early in Massachusetts, New York, New Jersey, and Virginia. -

Phone: +36(96)-503-454, fax: +36(96)-613-595 e-mail: [email protected] Abstract: Thermodynamics as a wide branch of physics had a long historical development from the ancient times to the 20th century. The invention of the thermometer was the first important step that made possible to formulate the first precise speculations on heat. There were no exact theories about the nature of heat for a long time and even the majority of the scientific world in the 18th and the early 19th century viewed heat as a substance and the representatives of the Kinetic Theory were rejected and stayed in the background. The Caloric Theory successfully explained plenty of natural phenomena like gas laws and heat transfer and it was impossible to refute it until the 1850s when the Principle of Conservation of Energy was introduced (Mayer, Joule, Helmholtz). The Second Law of Thermodynamics was discovered soon after that explanation of the tendency of thermodynamic processes and the heat loss of useful heat. The Kinetic Theory of Gases motivated the scientists to introduce the concept of entropy that was a basis to formulate the laws of thermodynamics in a perfect mathematical form and founded a new branch of physics called statistical thermodynamics. The Third Law of Thermodynamics was discovered in the beginning of the 20th century after introducing the concept of thermodynamic potentials and the absolute temperature scale. -

In the 1790s he acted as an agent and engineer for them in Manchester, in much the same way that John Rennie did in London. Ewart later pursued several business ventures in Manchester and Liverpool, mainly in textiles, for which he purchased several engines. He also continued to act as an unofficial agent, liaising with customers on Boulton Watt & Co.’s behalf and passing information to Soho about the state of various firms in the North West. INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION: SERIES ONE: The Boulton and Watt Archive, Parts 2 and 3 Publisher's Note - Part - 3 Over 3500 drawings covering some 272 separate engines are brought together in this section devoted to original manuscript plans and diagrams. Watt’s original engine was a single-acting device for producing a reciprocating stroke. It had an efficiency four times that of the atmospheric engine and was used extensively for pumping water at reservoirs, by brine works, breweries, distilleries, and in the metal mines of Cornwall. To begin with it played a relatively small part in the coal industry. In the iron industry these early engines were used to raise water to turn the great wheels which operated the bellows, forge hammers, and rolling mills. Even at this first stage of development it had important effects on output. However, Watt was extremely keen to make improvements on his initial invention. His mind had long been busy with the idea of converting the to and fro action into a rotary movement, capable of turning machinery and this was made possible by a number of devices, including the 'sun-and-planet', a patent for which was taken out in 1781. In the following year came the double-acting, rotative engine, in 1784 the parallel motion engine, and in 1788, a device known as the 'governor', which gave the greater regularity and smoothness of working essential in a prime mover for the more delicate and intricate of industrial processes. The introduction of the rotative engine was a momentous event. By 1800 Boulton and Watt had built and put into operation over 500 engines, a large majority being of the 'sun and planet type'.
