The Descendants of Daniel “Casher Dan” Shawhan (1801-1860) by Robert E. Francis First Generation 1. Daniel SHAWHAN. Born on 5 Dec 1801 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. Daniel was known as “Cashier Dan” because, according to family tradition, he conducted all his financial dealings in cash. Daniel was the fourth child of John Shawhan and Margaret McCune and the executor of his father’s last well and testament. The will states that at the death of Margaret McCune, Daniel is to have first chance to purchase the family property in Bourbon County, estimated at 180 acres. John stated in the will “I don’t wish it to go out of the family....” John also requested that Daniel finish a wall John had begun around the family graveyard. Daniel married Minerva Redmon on November 17, 1825. Minerva (born on 15 May 1807 in Harrison County, Kentucky) was daughter of Charles Redmon (1779-1853) and & Mary Rybolt (1785-1856), and sister of Elizabeth Redmon, the second wife of John Laughlin Shawhan. Daniel died intestate1 September 2, 1860 and is buried in the John Shawhan family cemetery.2 After the Civil War, Minerva and the children migrated to Lone Jack, Missouri. Minerva died August 21, 1890 at the age of 83 years and is buried at the Lone Jack Cemetery, Lone Jack, Missouri. The circumstances of Daniel’s death was reported in The Western Citizen--Fri 07 Aug 1860: “On Sunday morning, Daniel Shawhan died suddenly at his home near Shawhan's Station from what was supposed to be apoplexy of the heart brought on by overexertion. He had accosted a negro man belonging to Mrs. Rush who was passing with a bag maintaining, as Mr. Shawhan had supposed, storing plunder. He demanded to see what was in the bag--the negro refused and when Mr. Shawhan attempted to arrest him, resisted. A sharp struggle ensued which was scarcely ended when Mr. Shawhan sat down and almost immediately fell down, dead. His wife and one of his sons was present.” They had the following children: i. Mary Ann. Born on 2 Sep 1826. Mary Ann died on 30 May 1837; she was 10. Buried in the John Shawhan family cemetery. The words on her gravestone read: “In the memory of Mary Ann B. Shawhan Born 2nd Sept. 1826 Died 30th, May 1837” 2 ii. Charles Redmon (1829-1908) iii. John. Born on 25 Jan 1831. John died of a skull fracture after being kicked by a horse on 7 Jun 1846; he was 15. John is buried in the John Shawhan family cemetery. 3 iv. William Winston (1832-1905) v. Margaret Elizabeth. Born on 31 Oct 1834. Margaret Elizabeth died on 30 Oct 1837; she was 2. vi. Daniel B. Born on 19 Sep 1837. Daniel B. died on 2 Sep 1863; he was 25. Buried in John Shawhan family cemetery. vii. Joseph Bell. Born on 9 Apr 1839. Margaret Susan (1849-1869) Second Generation 2. Charles Redmon SHAWHAN. Born on 29 Mar 1829 in Bourbon Co., KY. Charles Redmon died in Lone Jack, MO on 8 Aug 1908; he was 79. On 2 Dec 1851 when Charles Redmon was 22, he first married Sarah Ellen ROGERS, in Bourbon Co., KY. Born About 1830. Sarah Ellen died in Bourbon Co., KY on 22 Feb 1853; she was 23. His obit mentioned that Charles had died at his home of heart trouble and general debility, having been sick for many months. It also stated that “Uncle Charlie” had been a resident of the Lone Jack, MO area since the spring of --197-- 1866, having been born in Bourbon County, KY. During the Civil War, Charles had enlisted under CSA Gen. Morgan; he was wounded near Burksville at the battle of Hartville, TN but participated in Morgan’s raid thru KY, IN, and OH. They had one child: i. Luellen M. Born on 23 Dec 1852 in KY. Luellen M. died on 15 Jun 1853 in KY. Buried in John Shawhan family cemetery. On 24 Jan 1854 when Charles Redmon was 24, he second married Ann Miller LAIL, daughter of John LAIL (1802-1841) & Burzilla BROWN (1809-1857), in KY. Born on 19 Dec 1835 in Harrison Co., KY. Ann Miller died in Bourbon Co., KY on 29 Jun 1865; she was 29. Ann is buried in the John Shawhan family cemetery. They had the following children: i. Mollie. Born About 1855 in Bourbon Co., KY. 8 ii. Sallie Ann (Sarah) (1858-1949) iii. Alice. Born About 1859 in Bourbon Co., KY. iv. Maggie. Born About 1861 in Bourbon Co., KY. 9 v. Lutie Lail (1864-1942) vi. Lottie Lail. Born on 29 Sep 1864 in Bourbon Co., KY. About 1866 when Charles Redmon was 36, he third married Sarah Frances EASLEY, in KY. Born on 4 Jul 1837. Sarah Frances died on 5 Jun 1867; she was 29. They had one child: 10 i. John Easley (1867-1957) On 9 Feb 1868 when Charles Redmon was 38, he fourth married Lucy Ann WILLIAMS, in KY. Born About 1840. They had one child, Julia, born on 26 Apr 1870 in Lone Jack, MO. Julia died in Lone Jack, MO on 12 Jul 1904; she was 34. About 1892 when Julia was 21, she married J. S. PINNELL, in MO. Born About 1868. 3. William Winston SHAWHAN. Born on 10 Dec 1832. William Winston died on 21 Aug 1905; he was 72. Buried in Lone Jack Cemetery, Lone Jack, Mo. On 27 Dec 1855 when William Winston was 23, he first married Julia RAVENSCRAFT. Born on 9 Nov 1835. Julia died on 27 Jun 1866; she was 32. Julia is buried in the John Shawhan family cemetery. They had the following children: 11 i. Daniel Duncan (1856-1929) 12 ii. William Elken (1858-1938) iii. Martha Bell. Born on 6 Jul 1860 in Shawhan Station, Ky. Martha Bell died in Lee’s Summit, Mo. on 22 Apr 1934; she was 73. On 12 Feb 1890 when Martha Bell was 29, she married William CAVE. “Mattie’s” obituary reads: Mrs. Mattie Shawhan Cave, 74 years old, Lee’s Summit, Mo., died yesterday at her home. She was born in Shawhan Station, Ky., and had lived in Jackson County since 1868. She is survived by her hus- band, William Cave, of the home; a brother, William E. Shawhan, Shawhan Station; five half-brothers, Charles Shawhan, 1825 Jefferson street; George Shawhan, Holden, Mo.; Joseph Shawhan, Leavenworth, Kansas; Jake Shawhan, Lone Jack, Mo.; and Hope Shawhan, Tulsa, Ok., and three half-sisters, Mrs. Minnie Taggert and Mrs. Maggie Dickerson, both of Lee’s Summit, and Mrs. Claude Lee, 2509 Forty-sixth avenue, Kansas City, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 o’clock at the First Christian church, Lee’s Summit; burial at Lee’s Summit.4 13 iv. John Morgan (1863-) v. Julia Lee. Born on 8 Mar 1866. Julia Lee died on 2 Aug 1866. Buried in John Shawhan family cemetery. In Jun 1867 when William Winston was 34, he second married Eliza Ann LLOYD, in Cincinnati, Ohio. Born on 31 Aug 1844. Eliza Ann died on 14 Dec 1904; she was 60. They had the following children: i. Charles Thomas, born on 18 Aug 1868. Charles Thomas died on 25 Feb 1935; he was 66. Charles Thomas first married Mamie CURTIS. Mamie died on 25 Jan 1909. Charles Thomas second married Elizabeth BACKUS. ii. George Edwin. Born on 10 Jan 1870. George Edwin died on 2 Feb 1951; he was 81. On 9 Dec 1895 when George Edwin was 25, he first married Luella CRAWFORD. Born in Chapel Hill, Lafayette Co., Mo. Luella died on 15 Jan 1924. On 18 Nov 1925 when George Edwin was 55, he second married Lottie SHIPPY. Lottie died on 30 Apr 1940. 14 iii. Joseph Redmon (1873-1942) iv. Minerva Sarah. Born on 23 Oct 1875. Minerva Sarah died in Lee’s Summit, Mo. on 20 May 1950; she was 74. Buried in Lee’s Summit Cemetery. On 28 Nov 1903 when Minerva Sarah was 28, she married Dan TAGGERT. Dan died in Feb 1911 in Lee’s Summit, Mo. --198-- 15 v. Mary Florence (1877-1929) vi. Ada. Born on 10 Dec 1881. Ada died in 1915; she was 33. 16 vii. Nancy May (1884-1959) viii. Maggie Berneda. Born on 31 Dec 1888. Maggie Berneda died on 8 Sep 1963; she was 74. Maggie Berneda married Thomas DICKERSON. ix. Hope Lloyd. Born on 23 Oct 1885. Hope Lloyd died on 30 Dec 1918; he was 33. Buried in Lone Jack Cemetery, Lone Jack, Mo. Hope Lloyd married Belle FAULKENBERRY. Born on 14 Jul 1887. 17 x. Ennis Winston “Jake” (1879-1961) 4. Sarah Minerva SHAWHAN. Born on 13 Jul 1842. Sarah Minerva died on 13 Mar 1911; she was 68. On 26 Aug 1858 when Sarah Minerva was 16, she married Elkin David LIGHTFOOT. Born on 5 Feb 1836. Elkin David died on 29 Nov 1893; he was 57. They had the following children: 18 i. “Big” Frank ii. Minnie. 5. George Henry SHAWHAN. Born on 2 Dec 1843 in Shawhan Station, Ky. George Henry died in Lone Jack, Mo. on 28 Jul 1912; he was 68. On 20 Jan 1868 when George Henry was 24, he married Mary Francis TATMAN, daughter of William Lee TATMAN & Elizabeth SIDLES (1833-1888).
