Rayford W. Logan Papers Additions 181-1 to 181-23

Prepared by: Judy Ruttenberg August 1996 Scope Note

The papers of Rayford Whittingham Logan (1897 - 1982) document his life as an educator, scholar, author, civil rights activist, and fraternity leader. The papers in this collection date from 1916, when he was an undergraduate at Williams College, until his death in 1982. They measure approximately eight cubic feet. Logan was an active lecturer and a prolific author. His papers include personal and professional correspondence, speeches, writings, and programs chronicling his public work. The materials document his efforts advocating civil rights in all spheres of political and social life, and his interest in foreign affairs. Logan's spoken and published works include material on Haiti, a strong focus of his scholarly career. Also included are materials explaining Logan's adamant objection to the term "black," and insistence on "Negro" -- a point of principle which dominated much of his correspondence and approach to organizations in the last twenty years of his life. Materials about W.E.B. Du Bois, a subject of Logan's writings, can be found throughout the collection, including thirty-five years of correspondence. Logan was an active member of several organizations. Featured in this collection is his role as Director of Educational Activities and General President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. His initiation of local campaigns, such as Education for Citizenship, is highlighted, along with his role in national conventions. The Rayford Logan papers were acquired by Moorland-Spingarn from Dr. Logan's executor, Dr. Michael Winston, in 1983. 3
