Obituary - Cathy Jenkins 1946 – 2017

Cathy and her husband Nigel bought their house, the Bastle in , as a ruin in 1981 and spent many years turning it into a unique home, whilst living and working in Tyneside as architects. Spending weekends and holidays in the valley, their social life quickly became entrenched locally. So, when in 1998 they decided to come and live amongst their many friends, it seemed a natural move. Commuting for the first few years, in 2000 they downsized and moved their practice to Rothbury, where they continued to practice for the next 6 years. Cathy retired in 2006 and was able to spend more time enjoying her many interests. Having been a member of the tennis club for many years, she became club secretary. She and Nigel provided the scenery for the annual CADS panto for the first five years. Cathy drove the community bus, including some longer trips with the basketry group. She walked the St Cuthbert’s and St. Aidan’s way with friends and took part in many other activities including carpet bowls, bridge club, book group, archaeology, U3A walking and art appreciation group, basketry group etc. Finally, although not a churchgoer, she was church treasurer for Alwinton and Holystone for many years until having to give up due to illness. Cathy died at home, after two years suffering from cancer. She will be greatly missed by Nigel, her family and all her friends.

Cathy wanted a 'gathering ' to celebrate her life rather than a memorial and had planned the content well in advance. We have booked the Jubilee Hall in Rothbury for Saturday afternoon on the 25th March at 2.00pm.

Valley Happenings

There will be many people who remember Colonel Richard Cross with great affection. He was Commandant at Otterburn Camp for many years in the 80’s and 90’s and was very approachable when there were any problems with the ranges. When he retired, he and Nairn bought a farm in West Woodburn and remained very involved in anything local. Sadly he died very suddenly and will be much missed. His funeral was held in Elsdon church on Friday 17th March.

Our 200 club is now up and running and anyone who would like a ticket and not already been approached, then please contact Julia on 630241. All proceeds go to maintaining the churchyards.

This year again we are holding an alternative to our Garden Fete and planning a family barbecue in June at Simon Kenny’s new shed. The details will be in the next newsletter but we are very grateful to Simon for letting us christen his spanking new build!

We will be having an Alwinton church yard spring clean on Saturday. 1st April at 10.30am and it would be very nice to see anyone with a wee bit of spare time to give us a hand.

Congratulations to Netherton School for their very good Ofsted report.

There will be an Easter garden at Alwinton Churchyard at 1.30pm for all children on Good Friday. Bring your Easter decorations i.e. coloured stones, shells, flowers etc. Refreshments will be provided.

All of the Easter services are listed in this newsletter. We very much look forward to seeing you at one of the services and wish you all a very happy Easter.

SPONSOR A GRASS CUT / Alwinton & Holystone Churchyards

Spring/Summer is just around the corner and our latest fundraising idea has been to ask local businesses if they would like to sponsor a grass cut in one of our churchyards and as a thank you we will personally thank them and advertise their business in one of our monthly Church Newsletters if they wish. We then thought people independently might also like to sponsor a cut.

Every year we try to come up with different ideas to fundraise for various jobs to be carried out to maintain our churches and the outside is no different, we do get some voluntary help which is fantastic and couldn’t do without it. So we hope this latest idea is a success.

We have costed our Grass Cut Sponsor at £25.00 and would be delighted if anyone would like to help us with this new additional fundraising idea, if you are able to sponsor a cut please could you make your cheque payable to Alwinton with Holystone Churches and post to Rev Michael Boag, The Rectory, Rothbury, Morpeth, NE65 7TL, or could be given to either Julia Stott, Sharon Graham or Gail Johnston. Many thanks, and any help given is much appreciated.
