Harbottle Show Saturday September 1st 2018

It’s that time again folks, Harbottle Show is on Saturday September 1st and we will have the usual great line-up of attractions. The schedule for the Exhibition tent is attached to the Newsletter and also on the website at www.harbottleshow.com .

The music tent will open at 12:30 and our star attractions this year will be Rod Clements and Ian Thompson, both of Lindisfarne fame. Fantastic as a duo and not to be missed….. and they are not alone. We will be kicking off with the Sword Dancers, followed by Alnwicky, Country Blue, ThreeScore, Valerie Fairless and also the one and only Tom O' Donnell. A great day of music for everyone and every taste. (WOW! Editor)

Falconry Days Northumberland will be flying their birds, the dog show will start at noon and we will have a bigger ring this year – so get there in good time if you want to enter.

There will be terrier racing - that should be great fun, and there will be a Car Boot Sale again this year – only £10 per pitch and no need to book, so come and bag a bargain or clear some space at home!

Bring your crafts, artwork, vegetables and flowers. Get them on display and you might even win something as well, with the bargain price of only 20p per stand entry, just bring your entries along by 10 am on the morning and join in the fun. Why not give it a go? We look forward to seeing your baking. Why not try the Set Recipe and have a go at a tea loaf!

As usual there will be wrestling, sports, quoits and the chance to try your hand at archery and to see demonstrations of a variety of crafts. There is of course our lovely traditional tea tent, where a range of hot and cold drinks and fantastic food can be enjoyed in convivial company.

There will be a chance to look at some of the valley’s best sheep, see what our farmers work hard to produce for us, and see what makes a winner!! Why not come for a great day out, and a chance to meet up with friends. We will look forward to seeing you for a lovely day out, get that diary and calendar marked up!!!

Service music for July and August

For the summer months I'm continuing to play music by C20 composers, mainly British and French. Percy Whitlock and Benjamin Britten represent Britain, Jean Langlais, who lived throughout the century, and J. Alain represent France, and Flor Peeters and Cesar Franck (who actually lived in the 19th Century) representing Belgium (though both worked in France).

Sunday July 8th, Alwinton Sunday July 22nd, Alwinton Benjamin Britten: A village organist's piece Percy Whitlock: Lantana Jean Langlais: Pastoral Song Benjamin Britten: They walk alone Sunday August 12th, Alwinton Sunday July 15th, Holystone Jean Langlais: Petit Piece III Flor Peeters: Miniature, Opus 5 J. Alain: Berceuse Flor Peeters: Postludium Sunday August 19th, Holystone Cesar Franck: Offertoire Flor Peeters: Postludium Mary Thorne

VALLEY HAPPENINGS

Summer has arrived and what joy! There has been a constant watering of pots but it’s not a cause of any complaint! Lots of silage is now cut and stored and there are hundreds of shorn sheep to be seen so the farming calendar continues as usual having thought after months of wet we would never catch up again.

Only 2 concerts at Alwinton left and as this letter goes out our one on Sunday June 17th with the Halle Soloists will have been, which leaves “The Anonymous Monk” Singers on the 7th July as the last in the summer series. Do get a ticket as they are all wonderful and such a treat being right on our doorstep.

On Sunday 1st July we have our “Pimms and Canapes” lunch time ‘do’ at Glebe House and kindly hosted by John and Marion Farndale. Last year we had the most super party and we can assure you of plenty to eat! If you would like to order tickets contact Marion on 650328.

The Resource Group Duck Race takes place on Sunday 24th June at Shillmoor and who could resist a BBQ after all the fun of catching 500 ducks!

The quiz night for Harbottle Show and the church are starting again at the Star Inn on a Monday evenings, so we look forward to seeing you there at 8.30pm.

We wish all the young people leaving school and moving to another or heading off to university or into a job all the very best of luck and a very good holiday.

We hope to see everyone at Harbottle Show and laden with entries for the industrial tent!
