3D Third District Today May 2016 Happy Syttende Mai Happy Memorial Day Happy Mother’s Day Support the Charitable Trust Published by Ron Martinsen, 3D Pub. Rel. Dir. 3D SofN Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/TheThirdDistrictoftheSonsofNorway 1 The mission of Sons of Norway is to promote and to preserve the heritage and culture of Norway, to celebrate our relationship with other Nordic countries, and to provide quality insurance and financial products to its members. Fra Presidenten, Mary B. Andersen, May 2016 It is time to get down to business “Cumulatively small decisions, choices, actions, make a very big difference” Jane Goodall As can be expected at this time, your Third District Board and many of your fraternal brothers and sisters serving on convention committees are busy getting ready for the 64th District Lodge meeting to be held in June at Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. This location was specifically chosen to enable as many lodges as possible to attend. Each delegate makes a difference. The delegates set the course for the future direction of the Third District! You have a voice; I hope your lodge will use it by sending delegates. Lodge delegates will receive a Convention Reports book in late April or early May via email. It is the delegate’s job to discuss the various resolutions with his/her respective lodge and understand how the lodge wants the delegate to vote on a particular issue. I can’t emphasize enough this is your lodge’s time to officially voice your thoughts and wishes on the future of the Third District! Please, try to take advantage of this opportunity. It only happens once every two years. After the convention is over, each delegate should report back to his or her respective lodge with a summary of the important decisions made at the District Lodge meeting. The delegate should also announce the new officers and present any other items of interest or news that the lodge may want to know more about. Yes, there is a serious tone to this letter because the business of running a District is serious. We have so much fun together at our socials that it is easy to forget that we are more than a social organization. It is time to really get down to business. Jeg ønsker dere alt godt, Mary Charitable Trust - Kathy Dollymore - Counselor Michael Kilby has said "Your wealth isn't measured by the cash on hand, it's by the hand you give to those in need. The little things you do could have a big impact in someone's life." You can make a difference in our Third District by remembering our Brothers and Sisters of the 3D in your estate planning. Planned giving allows you to achieve a number of goals simultaneously through a variety of deferred giving arrangements. You can meet your current needs and make provisions for your family members, while also minimizing your estate's tax burden. You can make a future commitment to the Charitable Trust without losing access to your assets in the present. Ultimately, planned giving can provide you with the most of your assets, both now and in the future. The most common form of planned giving is a bequest from a donor's will. A bequest is simple to implement and offers you flexibility in your planning. Bequests can take several forms, usually designating a specific property, amount of money or percent of your estate that you want the Third District Charitable Trust to receive. Charitable gifts made through a will are fully tax deductible; no federal estate tax or state inheritance tax applies to such gifts. You will be assisting our own Third District members who, due to age, infirmities or circumstances, have fallen on hard times. Never underestimate the difference You can make in the lives of others. Step forward, reach out and help. To those who have reached out to help our members the trustees of the Third District Charitable Trust appreciate your contributions. Please consider your contribution by using the form listed at the 3dwebsite. http://3dsofn.org/charitable-trust/ Kathy Dollymore, 1015 Edgerton Rd, Secane, Pa 19018, 610-626-2260, [email protected], 3D Counselor State of LOV – Roy Berntsen - LOV Chair 2 The holidays are upon us and the attendance in LOV is down. We need to concentrate on the membership and the organizations to come back. We are getting the former family reunions and we have ideas in the works for next year. We do have more open weekends than I would like. Of course, we are only open for 10 months and I know it takes longer than that to convince everyone we are open. Now with the Facebook page and the web site active, the word should spread more quickly. The LOV Board is very grateful for all of those who have come to share good times at LOV and we look forward to seeing you again. Barbara and I have visited 19 lodges last year and ventured to LOV at least once every month getting things done. It was really nice to reach out to the members. Lov provides a fun opportunity way to meet those across the district. We enjoy attending our own lodge weekends but think about joining another lodge, work weekend, or event weekend. This was how I have met and became good friends, who have become more than acquaintances, with members across the district. Maureen Cooper, Billy Karpack’s girlfriend, has been elected to be our Facebook administrator. She has been updating the page and it looks great. Please visit our page. You will be glad you did. Ron Martinsen has been doing a terrific job updating our LOV site in the Third District web site. I along with the LOV Board appreciate and thank them very much for the work they are doing for the benefit of LOV. Zone 1 held their second Viking Auction to raise funds for LOV and for 3D Ltd. Karen Olsen-Helmold “the Fundraising Femme Fatale” did it again. She chaired the committee and had 119 regular baskets, over 40 premium baskets collected and a 50/50. There were over 110 people in attendance and raised $3,709.50 half going to both LOV and to 3D Ltd. The committee deserves a great big hug and applause for all the work they did. We have not made a profit at LOV yet, but, we are working towards that goal. We ask each member to advertise for us and spread the word, we are open so come to enjoy some time away. As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me or any member of the LOV Board. We have a golf weekend coming up in May (the weekend after the parade) so please join us. You do not have to play golf, just be a person who is planning to have a fun time. The golfers will golf and the non-golfers will plan different venues. We may go on a car drive to a near-by festival, or we have gone to the Frog Farm – where there are not frogs, or even just relax or reading a book or socialize. You can be as adventurous as your imagination will take you. Come on up, visit LOV for a weekend and take a look, you will not be sorry. The “Grunnlov” is a document that includes modern democracy, law and human rights, such as freedom of speech and gender equality. The constitution declared that Norway was an independent kingdom in order to try to avoid being ceded to Sweden after Denmark’s defeat in the Napoleonic Wars. King Karl Johan banned any celebrations of the Constitution’s signing until 1833 when an official celebration was held near the monument of former government minister Christian Krohg. He dedicated his political career to curbing the King’s personal power. The main speaker at the event was Henrik Wergeland. The first Children’s Parade took place in Christiana in 1864, it consisted of boys only and was formed by Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.
