And yet I simply could not have done it without the generous support of a village of people and institutions, beginning with the faculty, students, and staff of Vanderbilt University. I am indebted first and foremost to my advisor, Helmut Smith, whose elegant writing and innovative approach to historical problems has inspired me from the beginning to work harder to investigate the big questions of German history. His probing questions and critiques on countless drafts of this dissertation have improved it immeasurably. I would never have pursued this topic without the inspiring example and encouragement of Sarah Igo and her fascinating seminar on the history of the human sciences. Auf Grundlage der für diese Ausarbeitung herangezogenen Sekundärliteratur zum Thema sowie Biographien und Quelleneditionen, kann bei keinem der 77 Personen eine Mitgliedschaft in der NSDAP nachgewiesen werden. Es scheint ganz im Gegenteil so zu sein, dass eines der einigenden Bänder der Mitglieder des Rates, quer über alle Parteigrenzen hinweg, die Gegnerschaft zum Nationalsozialismus gewesen ist. Aus den 77 Kurzbiographien gehen darüber hinaus ganz unterschiedliche Arten von Verfolgung, Diskriminierung, Deportation, Haft, Flucht, Emigration und „Innerer Emigration“ her- vor. Die Darstellung dieser individuellen Lebensschicksale ist weder in statistischen Angaben möglich, noch sind sie katalogisierbar. Deshalb werden die individuellen Le- bensschicksale in dieser Ausarbeitung in der gebotenen Kürze individuell dargestellt.

Using chapter headings such as "mentality," "education," "transportation," "law and justice," and "the social fabric," the findings for the Federal Republic and West Berlin were presented, often in time-trend series. Additional volumes were published at intervals of three to five years, with the last volume covering the period up to 1983; the volume for 1984 to 1989 is in preparation. In Germany a great variety of objective and subjective social indicators have been available ever since the Federal Republic was founded in 1949, as well as what are currently termed "output" social indicators. It is obvious that these data represent social indicators of the kind concisely defined by Ian Miles in his book published in 1958, Social Indicators for Human Development:1) " .

Stefan Georges Nachleben von 2009 seinerzeit einer gewissen Beliebtheit. Da hätte auch ein weiterer Zirkel in den Blick kommen können, der die westdeutsche Nachkriegsgeschichte gleichfalls mit vielen ver- deckten Strängen durchwirkt hat: derjenige um den Göttinger Philosophen Leonard Nelson (1882–1927). Zu den Schülern und Vertrauten Nelsons gehörte etwa Willi Eichler (1896–1971), der im Londoner Exil zur SPD stieß und nach dem Tod Kurt Schumachers zwar nicht zur Nachfolge antrat, weil er als öffentlichkeitsunwirksam galt, dafür aber als entscheidender Theoretiker das Godesberger Programm der Partei auf den Weg brachte. Oder die Pädagogin Minna Specht (1879–1961), die zunächst im Nelson-Kreis Leiterin des Landerziehungsheims Walkemühle wurde und nach ihrer Rückkehr aus dem Exil für fünf Jahre die (vom Nationalsozialismus nicht ganz unverschonte) Odenwaldschule übernahm, was vor längerer Zeit zur Ver- vollständigung von ganz anders interessierten Zeitungsberichten durch die Presse ging. Oder Fritz Eberhard (1896–1982), geboren als Helmut von Rauschenplat, promovierter Ökonom, Dozent an der Walkemühle, der nach der Rückkehr aus dem britischen Exil von der SPD in den Parlamentarischen Rat delegiert wurde und an- schließend für zehn Jahre Intendant des Süddeutschen Rundfunks war.     International Journal of Communication 11(2017), Feature 1839–1856 1932–8036/2017FEA0002 Journalism Professors in the German Democratic Republic: A Collective Biography MICHAEL MEYEN THOMAS WIEDEMANN LMU Munich, Germany Based on archive material and biographical interviews, this article reveals a dead end of the discipline’s history. Examining all 25 full professors of journalism in the German Democratic Republic (GDR), the study shows that the politically motivated closure of the Leipzig department in 1990 buried a paradigm that had lost the connection to international discussions. Even if the invention of the East German alternative was clearly shaped by the communists’ demand for journalists who would fit into the steered media, both the origins and requirements for the field’s professors and their very first steps were quite similar to the rest of the world. However, when globalization and academization took off in full force, GDR professors became increasingly isolated from the field. Keywords: journalism education and research, history of the field, academic careers, Cold War Using the example of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) and writing a collective biography of the country’s journalism professors, this article explores a dead end of the discipline’s history. Like in all Eastern European socialist countries before 1989, journalism education and training in the GDR was university based. Future journalists had to study at the Faculty of Journalism at the University of Leipzig over a period of four years. The faculty was founded in 1954 according to the Soviet model and renamed Journalism Section as part of the higher education reform in 1969.
