1st March 2019 PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Caring for ourselves and others This week has seen both the local and national media reporting on a number of different concerns relating to the use of technology, social media and young people. It is important to remember that everyone’s opinion can be influenced by what they see and hear but those opinions are formed using the knowledge we already have. That is why we always ensure that everyone at Mounts Bay is encouraged to treat each other with respect, with responsibility and to build positive relationships. Social media, when used responsibly, can be an amazing way to build positive relationships and to respect the great things that our peers are prepared to share.

We use social media to showcase our students but we also ensure that our young people cannot access inappropriate content on any of the devices that we supply or are connected to our Academy network, whether they are on campus or at home. We also regularly update you with information about any new things that may give you cause for concern when using your own devices. So if you follow our advice and use your own devices responsibly, you will be able to use social media in a positive manner. If you do see anything that causes you concern, contact any member of staff who will be able to get you some advice from our IT team.

It has been great to see Empathy in action this week as we built our pyramid of tins to take up to Pirate FM to assist them in their ‘Tonne of Tins’ appeal and help the food banks in to make a real difference to the community.

With the help of St Hilary School, one of our Leading Edge partners, we were able to deliver 190kg of tins to the studio yesterday. Our student Media Team were on hand to record the event and were lucky enough to be treated to a tour of the facilities to see just how much work is involved behind the scenes to broadcast the shows we enjoy every day. If you want to see how they got on, take a look on one of our social media feeds. Our 190kg of tins

Finally, let’s help our own record label, Qube Records, become the “Favourite Studio” in the Music Expo UK Awards 2019. They are currently in the lead in the public vote taking place on Facebook. You can vote by visiting our Facebook page and with a little support they will stay there!

Best wishes www.facebook.com/MountsBayAcademy

History Students Revising

Year 11 have made a purposeful start back to their exam preparation with a feedback lesson on their recent PPE.

Students received a PiXL style Smith Proforma which allowed them to reflect on and assess their strengths and weaknesses, with the aim of making their upcoming revision more targeted. As part of the lesson we were able to share examples of "what- good-looks-like" answers to the students. These can be found here - LINK

Well done for a really positive start back. Report by Mr Floyd, Mr Payne and Mr Blackabey Mock Exam Results Day

This week Year 11 collected their mock exam results. This was done as a practice run for the real results day in August. Lots of students have improved their grades since their first set of mocks through hard work and determination. Well done Year 11!

Student Poetry Anthology Celebrated

This week MBA was awarded a certificate for the production of an anthology of student writing based on paintings from World War 1. The books were distributed in the wider community of West Penwith and donations were given to the Royal British Legion.

The work was inspired by a tour of World War 1 battlefields and cemeteries undertaken by myself and two Year 10 students, Blake Smalley and Bronnen Beacall, last year.

Nature Around the Academy

This week started with an unseasonably warm spell. By contrast, this time last year we had snow! A beautiful daffodil near the bus bay shows us that spring has sprung.

Report by: Grace

Fog is caused when water in the atmosphere condenses and forms tiny water droplets. It only happens when there are microscopic dust or air pollution particles. Sea fog, for example, is formed when water droplets condense around salt particles. Fog is not the same as mist. Fog is denser than mist. If you can see 1,000 metres away it’s mist, less than 1,000 metres and it’s fog! Report by: Miss Wheeler BE RESPONSIBLE

Healthy Lifestyle Champions

Our Healthy Lifestyle Champions at Mounts Bay were very lucky to kick off their project with the help of the youth sports trust ambassador and former South African international rugby player, Thinus Delport.

Thinus continued some great discussion work with the champions which will be invaluable for them as they look to implement a healthy active lifestyle with their student peers, before actively partaking in some practical leadership work with our Year 7s. Report by: Mr Westren BE COMPETITIVE

County Champions!

On Thursday 28th February the Year 8 netball squad set out for the County Netball Tournament at . The squad finished in second place last year and had their sights set high this year. The first round of games saw Mounts Bay placed in a pool group with Richard Lander, , Helston and Bodmin. The team put out a great performance, winning all their matches to finish as pool group winners.

Going through into the second round and in the top group, Mounts Bay were now facing the other top four teams in the County: , Wadebridge, and Penrice.

The opening game saw Mounts Bay take on Truro High who they had previously lost the County title to the previous year. The girls put out a storming performance winning the game 6-3. The second match saw them take on a very strong Penrice and they lost 6-4. However, Truro High went on to beat Penrice, so at this point the team needed to score as many goals as possible and win. Mounts Bay then faced Wadebridge and came away with a 7-1 win. Truro School then went on to draw 5-5 with Penrice and the decider of the tournament came down to the final match of the day against Truro School. The standard of play, determination and resilience shown by the team was outstanding, and the girls went on to take a 7-2 victory against Truro School!

This meant that Mounts Bay Academy came away with the title of U13 County Netball Champions! This is a fantastic achievement by the team and they should be very proud of their achievement! Report by Miss Veall BE COMPETITIVE

Year 8 Rugby

Mounts Bay recently participated in the Cornwall School Games Rugby Development Festival at Truro School and enjoyed a great day.

We played five games throughout the day, winning three and narrowly losing two. It was a keenly contested festival with a focus on development and participation with everyone receiving an equal share of game time and opportunities across the day.

International Year of the Periodic Table

2019 has been designated by UNESCO as the International Year of the Periodic Table (IYPT), marking the 150th anniversary of the Mendeleev periodic table, which is an iconic image and a vital tool to all who learn and work in science at all stages of their learning and careers.

During the course of the year we will be writing about some elements and what we do with them at the Academy and what they are used for in the ‘real world’.

Potassium 19 Atomic Number 19

K The element symbol for potassium is K Potassium which stems from ‘kali,’ itself from the root word ‘alkali’. It is located in group one of the periodic table, also known as alkali metals. It is a soft solid with a low melting point and can easily be cut with a knife. Potassium is an extremely active metal that reacts violently with oxygen in water and air. This reaction is known as an exothermic reaction, meaning it releases energy in the form of heat. Report by: Miss Wheeler Tassomai Top 20

The Tassomai App has been used by our Year 11 students as part of their revision in preparation for their Science GCSEs.

Feedback from previous year groups has been overwhelmingly positive and statistics have shown that if students complete more than 80% of the Tassomai course, then they could achieve one grade above their target! Keep up the good work!

This week’s word is: Contorted

Definition: Twisted or bent out of normal shape.

Etymology: From Latin contortus, past participle of contorquere "to whirl, twist together," from assimilated form of com- "with, together," here perhaps an intensive prefix (see com-) + torquere "to twist" (from PIE root *terkw- "to twist").
