Tutkimuksessa tarkastellaan kuinka mielikuva Venäjän kansakunnasta ja sen identiteetis- tä on rakennettu ja esitetty kolmessa englanninkielisessä romaanissa. Tarkasteltavat teok- set ovat Joseph Conradin Under Western Eyes (1911), Rebecca Westin The Birds Fall Down (1966) ja Penelope Fitzgeraldin The Beginning of Spring (1988). • Elisaveta Fen's Chekhov Translations Claire Warden Since The
CORE Metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk Provided by Loughborough University Institutional Repository “A Glimpse of Another Russia”: Elisaveta Fen’s Chekhov translations Claire Warden Since the first British production of Anton Chekhov’s play The Seagull in 1909, audiences have found the Russian’s plays both beguiling and frustrating in seemingly equal measure. After living in Britain some years, Russian translator Elisaveta Fen began to recognize the problem: These plays are tragi-comedies: they are the stuff life is made of. They do not fit into any conventional category. Awkwardly presented, they can disappoint, baffle, irritate, or they can cast their spell over the spectator and make him feel 1 he is watching real people, living real lives—on the stage.0F Despite their ubiquity in twentieth- and twenty-first-century British theatre, Chekhov’s plays continue to bewilder audiences: they are tricky to define in terms of genre, and full of unpronounceable names and obscure references to places and cultures. Fen, the primary focus of this article, took up the unenviable challenge of making these plays more accessible to British audiences. Yet, she remains a marginal figure in British theatre historiographies; her name appears as ‘translator’ on numerous programmes and playbills but is rarely acknowledged further. This article claims Fen as an overlooked figure, recovering her work in order to place her within narratives of British theatre. In so doing it identifies her distinct semi-autobiographical, empathetic approach to the translation process. Her translations attempt to resolve a number of personal tensions—homesickness, her despair over the perceived destruction of her Russian idyll (and her frustration at British misunderstandings of this), and her concerns about fitting into British life.

  • Emotional Culture? an Investigation Into the Emotional Coverage of Televised Leader Debates in Newspapers and Twitter
London South Bank University School of Arts and Creative Industries Emotional Culture? An Investigation into the Emotional Coverage of Televised Leader Debates in Newspapers and Twitter by Morgane Dani`eleKimmich Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements of London South Bank University for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy September 2016 Abstract This thesis studies how emotions are used in and around TV debates by politi- cians during debates, by newspaper journalists in their coverage of debates and by Twitter users following debates and reacting to their coverage. Although emotions have been the focus of many studies recently, the literature that combines emo- tions with politics, journalism and social media remains limited. To fill this gap in knowledge, my research involves two case studies: the 2010 British election, where TV debates were held for the first time, and the 2012 American election, where debates are a long-standing tradition. For this purpose, my research is guided by the following research question: how far did political candidates, print media and Twitter users use emotions and emotional references in the 2010 British and 2012 American televised leader debates and their coverage? To answer this research question, I carried out a content analysis of the three British and four American debate transcripts; a framing analysis of 104 articles from the New York Post and 223 articles from The New York Times as well as 93 articles from The Sun and 238 articles from The Guardian; and, finally, a content analysis of a sample of American (30 000 tweets) and British tweets (3 000 tweets) posted during the debates period.

Dina Gusejnova illustrates how a supranational European mentality was forged from depleted imperial identities. In the revolutions of 1917–1920, the power of the Hohenzollern, Habsburg, and Romanoff dynasties over their subjects expired. Even though Germany lost its credit as a world power twice in that century, in the global cultural memory, the old Germanic families remained associated with the idea of Europe in areas reaching from Mexico to the Baltic region and India. Gusejnova’s book sheds light on a group of German-speaking intellectuals of aristocratic origin who became pioneers of Europe’s future regeneration. In the minds of transnational elites, the continent’s future horizons retained the con- tours of phantom empires. Was Nick Clegg's aunt a Soviet Spy? She was an enigmatic Russian baroness who cut a Daily Mail.com swathe through London's best connected men. Now secret MI5 files pose the question, Jan. 13, 2015 Was [Sir] Nick Clegg's aunt a Soviet Spy? She was an enigmatic Russian baroness who cut a swathe through London's best connected men. Now secret MI5 files pose the question By Guy Walters for the Daily Mail Published: 17:46 EDT, 13 January 2015 | Updated: 19:17 EDT, 13 January 2015 he agents from the Cheka came in the middle of the night, as they always did. As members of the Soviet Union’s first State Security organisation, by TSeptember 1918 the men already had a notorious reputation for making people disappear. The agents were led by Pavel Malkov, who was also the commandant of the Kremlin. His involvement suggested that the person they had come to arrest in this Moscow apartment block was someone of note. But far from being some Bolshevik who had fallen foul of the new regime, their target was a jug-eared Scotsman. His name was Robert Bruce Lockhart, a British diplomat and suspected spy, who the Cheka maintained was behind a failed assassination attempt on Lenin just two days before. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2908987/Was-Nick-Clegg-s-aunt-Soviet-Spy-enigmatic- Russian-baroness-cut-swathe-London-s-best-connected-men-secret-MI5-files-pose-question.html Page 1 Was Nick Clegg's aunt a Soviet Spy? This includes choosing the agenda from amongst the policy and business motions submitted by conference reps, local, regional and state parties, specified associated organisations and Federal committees, and also taking decisions on topics such as venues, registration rates and other administrative and organisational matters. It works within a budget set by the FFAC. The FCC has 21 voting members: the Party President; the Chief Whip (or substitute); three state party reps; two reps from the FE and two from the FPC; and twelve members directly elected by conference reps. It elects its own chair (currently Andrew Wiseman), who must be one of the directly elected reps. A tremendous amount of hard work goes into organising conference, both by the staff and volunteers. Much of this goes on behind the scenes unseen by those attending conference. I would like to express my thanks to everyone that is involved in the organisation of conference. Amendments to Motions As always, every item on the agenda is still open to amendment. The deadline for submitting amendments – and also emergency motions and questions to reports – is 1.00pm on Monday 5th September.
