N°3612 Laboratorio de análisis biológicos Desarrollo ensayo Autoriza el ensayo Claudia Aburto Leiva ENVIROLAB SpA 2.1 Características del método de ensayo Previa separación de los organismos del sedimento marino, mediante el uso de un tamiz de 1 mm, posteriormente se identifican todos los organismos encontrados. La identificación se determina al nivel taxonómico más bajo posible y debe realizarse bajo lupa. Además, en el caso de las familias Capitellidae, Oweniidae, Cirratulidae y Nassaridae, es obligatorio que la determinación sea, como mínimo, a nivel de género. Descripción Posteriormente, los organismos se dejan drenar por 10 minutos para eliminar el exceso de alcohol. Luego, se pesan en una balanza analítica, por taxón, para obtener el peso húmedo alcohólico. En este informe de ensayo, la abundancia se expresa en n/m2, mientras que la biomasa va expresada en g/m2. 3. Over 10,500 names are treated including 6,793 valid species and subspecies (with 1,907 primary synonyms), 1,271 genera and subgenera (with 393 primary synonyms), 93 families and 38 superfamilies. Nomenclatural and taxonomic problems are reviewed in detail, and many resolved. Detailed notes and references are provided where necessary. The constitution of a large number of families and superfamilies is discussed in detail, with the positions of some taxa rearranged in an attempt to form a stable base for future taxonomic studies. This is the first time the nomenclature of any large group of decapod crustaceans has been examined in such detail. De Los Ríos 4,5*, Carlos Esse6, Jorge Pérez-Schultheiss7, Rolando Vega-Aguayo1,8, Luz Boyero 9,10 & Francisco Correa-Araneda6 The marine ecosystem of the Chilean Patagonia is considered structurally and functionally unique, because it is the transition area between the Antarctic climate and the more temperate Pacifc region. However, due to its remoteness, there is little information about Patagonian marine biodiversity, which is a problem in the face of the increasing anthropogenic activity in the area. The aim of this study was to analyze community patterns and environmental characteristics of scavenging crustaceans in the Chilean Patagonian Sea, as a basis for comparison with future situations where these organisms may be afected by anthropogenic activities. These organisms play a key ecological role in marine ecosystems and constitute a main food for fsh and dolphins, which are recognized as one of the main tourist attractions in the study area. We sampled two sites (Puerto Cisnes bay and Magdalena sound) at four diferent bathymetric strata, recording a total of 14 taxa that included 7 Decapoda, 5 Amphipoda, 1 Isopoda and 1 Leptostraca. Taxon richness was low, compared to other areas, but similar to other records in the Patagonian region. The crustacean community presented an evident diferentiation between the frst stratum (0–50 m) and the deepest area in Magdalena sound, mostly infuenced by Pseudorchomene sp. and a marked environmental stratifcation. This species and Isaeopsis sp. are two new records for science.

The Museum now publishes the following serials at irregular intervals as CONTRIBUTIONS IN SCIENCE, HISTORY BULLETINS, SCIENCE BULLETINS, EDUCA­ TION SERIES, HISTORY SERIES, and SCIENCE SERIES. The Contributions are short papers of octave size. The Bulletins are longer, comprehensive papers of quarto size. The Series are papers of variable lengths of quarto or larger size. Papers in each serial are numbered separately and consecutively. SCIENCE BULLETINS contain articles in the earth and life sciences, presenting results of original research. Emphasis is intended for publication of papers primarily based on the collections and research activities of the Museum. No review-oriented manuscripts will be considered.     Field Assessment of the Predation Risk - Food Availability Trade-Off in Crab Megalopae Settlement Sebastia´n Tapia-Lewin, Luis Miguel Pardo* Instituto de Ciencias Marinas y Limnolo´gicas, Laboratorio Costero Calfuco, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Austral de Chile, Valdivia, Chile Abstract Settlement is a key process for meroplanktonic organisms as it determines distribution of adult populations. Starvation and predation are two of the main mortality causes during this period; therefore, settlement tends to be optimized in microhabitats with high food availability and low predator density. Furthermore, brachyuran megalopae actively select favorable habitats for settlement, via chemical, visual and/or tactile cues. The main objective in this study was to assess the settlement of Metacarcinus edwardsii and Cancer plebejus under different combinations of food availability levels and predator presence. We determined, in the field, which factor is of greater relative importance when choosing a suitable microhabitat for settling. Passive larval collectors were deployed, crossing different scenarios of food availability and predator presence. We also explore if megalopae actively choose predator-free substrates in response to visual and/or chemical cues. We tested the response to combined visual and chemical cues and to each individually. Data was tested using a two-way factorial design ANOVA. In both species, food did not cause significant effect on settlement success, but predator presence did, therefore there was not trade-off in this case and megalopae respond strongly to predation risk by active aversion.
